S swansea taking a stand but not sure what affect that will have. Social media companies needs to enforce the rules...
I don't think the issue is enforcement as such, accounts get banned usually once a racist tweet or message has been sent and reported, the issue is that it takes a couple of minutes to set up a dummy social media account, all you need is a VPN, a new E-Mail address and then you can send a message or tweet to anyone you like. Even if someone get's caught and a social media company gets their IP and reports them to the Police, you're fully reliant on that person being in a country where the Police will actually do something about it.
If we allow private companies to create and run online social media platforms for the purpose of making money, and allow them to police themselves making their own judgements on what is acceptable, is anyone really surprised at where it ends up?
Swansea burying poor form? Seriously, I think it’s good. Social media is madly out of hand in this respect. And although it is easy to set up fake accounts, it seems as if many are too daft to cover their tracks. It should be possible for clubs to at least sanction those offenders.
Sadly it's all too easy to sit behind a screen and make up some fake name just to abuse someone without much of a punishment. And in some parts of the world this won't be seen as an issue of course.
It'll continue to happen until they insist on strict KYC for all new account registrations. Napster showed the futility of playing whack-a-mole with unwanted behaviors. You have to engineer a paradigm shift to handle issues.
Because most users say they don't want it as it would restict their free speech. Free speech is for normal people and not for evil bigots. Sometimes you have to give up a little freedom to weed out the bad people.
This is a good start and I applaud Swansea for taking action. I'd love to see a snowball effect happen now and loads of other clubs join.
It's a joke how easy it is to register fake IDs on social media, but then that's why it's so popular. There is a solution but it'll mean losing as revenue so it won't happen sadly.
You don't have to use your real name in the forum, but should to register. Nothing wrong with hiding behind a false name for some banter, but if you cross the line you should be traceable.
