...in the 21st Century. Genuinely excited to see Troy do this at the Vic in the second half of the season! His team mate wearing #88 looks genuinely thrilled with his efforts.
Straight down the middle. That's where you want to put your penalty. I saw an article about it once, with the success rate for different parts of the goal and by far the best was straight down the middle. The keeper having dived off to one side or the other.
For those who aren’t consummate penalty takers I’ve always thought the best policy is to concentrate on going ‘hard and low’, rather that trying to place the ball. Doing that tends to lift the ball to a height where the keeper is more likely to save it if he happens to dive the right way.
What you talkin' 'bout Willis? Why would you want the ball to lift to a height where the keeper is more likely to save it?
There was a whole section on it on TalkSport today - someone wrote a book about it. Danny Murphy said it's about assessing the situation in front of you. The example being, Bobby Zamora once blasting a 90th-minute penalty down the middle and when Murphy asked him why he replied "No keeper is standing still at home in the 90th minute" Keepers will tend to dive right or left to look like they're doing something hence going down the middle is the best option statistically. Still a lottery though. Can't replicate the pressure.
I meant that trying to place the ball tends to lift it. Watch any shoot-out and those are the ones that tend to get saved, even if they are quite well struck because the keeper doesn’t have to get right down to the ground.
That’s my main, actually only, table football manoeuvre. Troy seldom gets more than 6 inches off the ground so precious little room for error.
Data tells us that it pays to lift the ball into the upper portion of the goal. Much greater indicator of success than direction. True story.
Imagine what the Kazan manager would have said if the showboater had missed. And what price the opposition manager said something about lack of respect?
If it was my team he did that against he would be kicked mercilessly for the rest of the match. Showboating ****.
Actually it was a picture in the paper showing where the last 100/200/300? Prem pens had been directed. The huge majority of the above waist height ones were successful as v few were saved. Conversely, a surprising proportion of the daisy cutters were saved. A similar number simply missed. I am not a physicist but maybe this is because diving down is easier than diving up.
