Happy to oblige all of those who would like to put Kane's record in perspective.

I can confirm that Jimmy Greaves was England's top scorer, if you exclude friendlies and penalties and measure ability by goals per 90 mins.
In fact, he trounces the next 4 in the top 5 (as usually quoted) even Crisp Boy/Immigration Activist (sorry @Filbert).

Thank you for raising the matter. I was suprised just how much better Greaves was, when you just consider non-penalty goals per 90. I'm just sorry I never got to see him in action.

Just to point out that the distinction between competitive games and friendlies was not as marked in Greaves’s day amongst players fans or the media as it is now. With fewer matches generally and no subs, it was always an honour to be picked for England and almost every game was viewed as important.

Greaves may not have played as wide a range of teams as Kane but just watching him with the ball and his positioning and craft he's the best. Lord knows how much he'd command in the market today. You can't teach that control, IQ and spatial awareness.

Ryan Porteous helping Scotland beating Spain ..

Be a good confidence booster for him.

Or more likely probably means he’ll be rubbish Saturday!

    'A special night'

    FT: Scotland 2-0 Spain

Scotland defender Ryan Porteous was a colossus tonight, in just his third international appearance.

"Obviously, it's a special night against a really top team," he told BBC Sportsound. "We all believed as a squad we could pull it off and games at home in this type of competition you want to pick up points and fortunately we have.

"The crowd obviously played a massive part and we’re grateful to them as well.

"It's one game, it puts us in a good position, we've picked up six points but there's a lot of football left to be played."

I know they had a particularly bad result the other night at home but Robert Page really getting in the neck from Wales fans.

Guess after a good spell by their standards of getting to major tournaments the expectations are raised and demand for better results/performances.

Dare I say Wales' main problem is having no Bale and always failing to keep 11 men on the pitch or having a defence worthy of the name?

Fans might have to be more realistic now?

Their “golden generation” is finished, Bale and Ramsey were done way before the World Cup and Wales’ showing was pathetic.

I’ll be surprised if we see them at another tournament this decade.

You have to bear in mind it's a far smaller pool of players to choose from. Everyone says look England are the best team in the UK and Ireland. Well it shouldn't be unexpected. England has by far the largest playing base numbers wise. That Wales are experiencing difficulties should be in itself unsurprising. These sorts of teams are prone to cyclical variations in success where sometimes a group of players emerge together and then disappear. That Scotland maintained parity with England for so long in the 19th and most of the 20th century can be attributable to the street football of the major towns in Scotland. Most of which has gone and not been replaced by adequate facilities and reducing numbers of kids who are more content to play computer games.

Uruguay almost went this way before focusing heavily on skills based youth football. And they are up there again which has always been consistently amazing given their population size. Indeed they just won the u20 World Cup albeit for the first time.

Moldova caused the shock of the round beating Poland. Wonder how much time Santos has. Not a great manager in my honest opinion.

Henderson being booed. Southgate doesn't understand. Says it all. He's a great role model. He's also a flaming hypocrite Gareth.

Not sure but Poland have badly underperformed and the other “big team” are the Czechs so no super power so to speak .

That Bellingham kid isnt too bad, he just needs to have a bit more confidence in his ability though.

Second half performance much better, two world class goals also. It's nice to be English during the international break but it's back to the yellow peril now though.

One of the usual suspects will win next year, England, France, Spain are main three for me with Portugal and hosts Germany as outsiders.

We did the double over the side who knocked us out of the final last time around. England always seem to impress qualifying, you can only beat the team in front of you and they generally do that well. Last Euros I really thought we would win, this time? Unsure we have the mentality to go that one step further. I've never liked Southgate as a coach but I have to admit the players' really take to him.

Be like last time - they will probably get a 0-0.

Shame about the other 2 games they lost!

"Proper England fans don't boo players" - Maguire https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/67142612

Oh sorry Harry. I don't realise booking makes you not a proper fans. Better put aside all my morals and cheer and clap the team.

Maybe I'll hold a rainbow flag up and a sign saying "I'm against racism and homophobia and sexism" and be positive. That's all you need to do isn't it. Calling out fascists and murdered is a bit mean. #bekind

Excitement in Malta last night when they led against Ukraine, but in the end a 3-1 defeat.

That result plus last night’s loss for Italy means the holder’s qualification is by no means guaranteed. They have to beat the team who stopped them reaching the last World Cup, North Macedonia, which would set up a winner take all clash with Ukraine.

Sounds like England Malta is akin to a pre season friendly .

Biggest surprise is people are shocked .

England aren’t great at the best of times let alone when it’s a nothing game and players are probably trying to avoid injury .

No idea why so many people waste money going to watch defensive Southgate at home to Malta in a dead rubber!
