Yeah, he's a nice bloke and cares about the club - that's great - but the reality is he's basically completely turd on the pitch, even at this level. I wish him all the best, but t's really not a loss.
I presume that is the idea but never know with us ! Getting a younger better option. Need to get promoted first before worrying about the PL though.
Exactly. This is the attitude that results in us having centre backs like Kabasele and Cathcart way after their peak in the premier league (I know Cathcart has had a good couple of months in the championship and is decent at this level). They are sub standard players if we want to go back to premier league. If the opportunity comes to get them off the books then we should take it and not let sentiment get in the way. And Troost is levels below that pair so I don’t see why anyone would not be delighted about him leaving from a playing perspective!
Cathcart is arguably our POTS and if we went up he’d probably be bottom 3 starting centre backs in the league. The gap in quality is huge.
Cathcart would be okay in a 4th/5th choice Mariappa role I guess in premier league. But we should have the likes of Kabasele and Troost nowhere near the squad.
Surprised people are disappointed?! Purely on the basis he’s a nice guy nobody is even saying they’re disappointed because he’s good, they’re disappointed because he smiles!!
Not disappointed from a footballing point of view, because ultimately football is about winning and having the best players you can on the pitch. However, I always feel that if a player seems to care about the club / fans, works hard and gives his all, then it’s a little disappointing to see some of the terms used in this thread about him and about him leaving. Once again, nothing but good wishes to him as he moves on and I appreciate his efforts with us.
He wouldn’t. Plus, he will be 34 at least if that small possibility became reality. Was shown up last season as being miles off PL quality. Don’t get sucked in. There isn’t a CB at the club who should be anywhere near the PL.
Cathcart is a passable but declining Championship centre back. Anyone who genuinely wants or would be happy for him to be any part of a Premier League squad ever again needs the straitjacket treatment (sorry, Jumbo).
Genuinely surprised there is so much animosity towards his footballing ability, he was part of a CB pairing that had the best defensive record the championship has ever seen. Not PL level, but our defensive record was a huge reason we got promoted last time around, and he was ever present. Glad we’re finally being a bit more cut throat with our squad though, encouraging to see us looking like we’re trying to build a cohesive squad with younger talents.
Looking at the outpouring of grief from our fans on social media to the departure of the woeful Troost, imagine what it is going to be like when we finally manage to get Kabasele off the books! It’s going to be a day of regional mourning.
Seemed like a genuinely nice fella who loved the club, unfortunately that's not enough or we'd all play for Watford. I do wish him well though.
Sad to see him go, been a loyal servant to the club and never has a bad word to say about the club. I do however, still feel that his mistake at Brentford last season massivly effected him for a long time. He got some abuse on Social Media from fans' and took it to heart. When he came back in he looked alright though, confident and had the odd good game, Luton being his best of this season by a mile. Wherever he goes next I am sure he will take it head on and try his best. His rallying call to the team after Coventry more or less played a massive part in getting us promoted psychologically in the players' mindset. He's not the best, and has declined, but his effort was always there and is way above Kabesele in attitude.
I still think that turnaround at Brentford had a massive impact on us and them. We lost our short-lived momentum, they started theirs. We can still catch them of course but will take longer.
I've got no problem with WTE going but I do think it's crazy that we've let a centre back go without having a replacement through the door. According to AL there is still work to be done on the Porteous deal, knowing us that'll take the rest of the week. So we're heading to Boro for a huge game on Saturday with Pollock as our only backup. That's if he doesn't join Exeter before the weekend.
...and we'd have been 6 points above the drop zone from recollection...instead of 3 points above, having played more games.
Confirmed. Loan fee, plus further fee if Saler-whatever stay up. I'll be watching Saler-something's results with interest
Probably depend on which league we are in, who is running the show and if we actually have any replacements in. If these guys don't buy Ekong then you'd think he might be sold to someone else.
Potentially we get 1 million if Salernitana stay up. https://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/s...arly-1m-defenders-move-italy/#comments-anchor Come on the Garnets then !
That's quite a small sum, IMO. Unless the Porteous deal is agreed and imminent, I think it's strange to sell WTE in this window. We're now 3 senior CB's down. We've only got Sierralta and Cathcart. If one of those players get injured, (and let's face it, they often are), we're into players like Pollock and academy kids. Not the position you want to be in when you've got to win virtually every remaining match this season.
Well yes it does leave us light on numbers but one presumes we will be getting players in as replacements. Too late for Saturday I admit . Maybe Kabasele is due to be fit ? But potentially 1 million for a player no one seems to rate is pretty good I feel - if that happens .
