From The Sun saying we are after Adam Armstrong on loan. Boro are also interested. https://t.co/xGuVKPUMkE
Seems like there are a lot of hurdles to jump, not least a lack of desire on Armstrong's part, but if we somehow managed it it would be a huge boost to both the season and our realistic chances of promotion.
If we're looking for a hard working good finisher who can score 20 goals in the Championship, he's a good shout. I'm not sure if he's got enough in his locker to be a solid PL striker, and for 8-12m, we might be able to get someone who has a higher ceiling. However given we are desperate for HG players, and want to get back to the PL ASAP to avoid our club financially imploding, there aren't many better signings. Edit: didn't bother reading the OP. On loan would be much better.
Yeah I basically clicked send then decided to re-read the OP and the article. A loan would be perfect, although not sure why Southampton would allow it.
I was convinced that he'd be a star for the Saints but it just didn't pan out. I think @Burnsy and @lowerrous both proved me wrong, again
Just thought it was a lot of money personally. Certainly wouldn’t be against taking him now on loan or for a small fee. Proven the get goals at this level - and a far better use of funds than Benik Afobe would be. Although with Southampton also losing Broja, not sure how much mileage I give the rumour. Fingers crossed though.
@LouOrns posted some interesting analysis on Twitter regarding Armstrong. Basically argues that he takes too many shots and it doesn’t really justify his goal tally (because of the wasteful decision-making and the fact that team needs to built around him). Not totally sure I agree but it’s an interesting take from someone who knows their stuff and I thought it merited further discussion. https://twitter.com/louorns/status/1540775422132047873?s=21&t=bNgiszoArr6yholXsHE_Hg
Even if we do have the finances for him, I do worry that Boro would be a more attractive proposition for him seeing as he's from the North East and they are building a pretty decent-looking side
Possibly - but if it’s just a loan, it’s possible he doesn’t have to uproot his life from Southampton etc we’re meeting he to come here.
Would be a fantastic signing which is exactly why he won't end up here and will end up scoring against us next season for another Champ club.
Been told he's now free to go on loan - sounds like Boro have the edge. One we tried for last year so wouldn't be surprised to see us push hard again.
Won't happen. He's English, has actually scored goals in the Championship and, most crucially of all, isn't one of our best mates clients.
He's from the north east and we're a shambles so if Boro want him then we've got absolutely no chance. Probably won't even go in for him anyway.
