True but in fairness Dwight Gayle has scored goals at Championship level far more recently than either Deeney or Gray. Gayle scored 23 goals on loan at West Brom only a couple of years ago.
Gray did get a few for us in the promotion season and a few for QPR but Gayle must be one of the highest scorers ever in the championship?
Wow. We are looking at players through the lens of 'as good or maybe better than Andre Gray.' Exciting times
Far from it. His goals per game ratio is excellent though. But trust me he isn't the answer at all. The thought of him and Norman Stanley up top hardly screams promotion.
Three years ago, in the 18/19 season, when he was 29. He's scored 5 league goals in the three seasons since, and is about to turn 33.
As it has been proved there is a gigantic difference between the Championship and Premier League. I am not saying he is a great signing but its a bit daft that some people are shitting themselves about the thought of us signing him considering his goalscoring record in the division.
You are probably right but if it is a toss up between Fletcher or Dwight Gayle I prefer Gayle. Hopefully the club have a better alternative but they probably wont.
Genuinely don't see how you can claim it's 'daft' as a fan of the club that you are. Deeney's got an even stronger goalscoring record in the Championship - do you think we should be re-signing him?
No but Deeney did last score goals frequently at Championship level in the 2014 season and has had two knee operations and struggled to stay in shape. He barely featured for Birmingham last season. I may be wrong but I am not sure Gayle is as passed it.
But by that logic, Deeney last scored goals in the Premier league in 2020 - a league which has been proved to have a 'gigantic difference' between it and the Championship, after all, as well as something that Dwight Gayle certainly has not managed at any point, let alone within the last two years. Speaking of injuries/operations, Gayle himself also suffered an MCL injury at the end of 2020. They're a similar age and equally past it, with Gayle more reliant on pace than Deeney ever was, and with a worse recent history of playing and scoring, despite Troy's meagre and diminishing performance and production levels. Signing and relying on Gayle would be poor both from a recent record and player profile angle, and from the angle in which it would once again utterly signpost how much we haven't learned any of the lessons that we were assured have been learned - more of the same on the cards, and I doubt Rob Edwards will exactly be salivating over the prospect of having to fit him in to his team, either.
We never learn We've done this routine of signing a past it player who's done nothing for 3 years, in the hope they somehow recapture their form of half a decade ago. Rose, Murray, King. Any others? Maybe this time it will all be different eh? Watford signing players who have about a 10% chance of being a success here is boring me to ******* tears.
Gayle would be a horrible signing but it’s pretty clear from Leventhal’s article that this isn’t someone we’re actually linked but more a name that supposedly would make sense. Was mentioned alongside Morgan Gibbs-White who is equally implausible albeit for different reasons. No one is getting excited about the prospect of us signing Gibbs-White because it obviously won’t happen. So too no one should be getting their knickers in a twist over Gayle. He’s not coming. He’s too old, he’s the wrong profile of striker, and he’d want a lot in wages. Won’t happen. Let’s chill out and move on. The pitchforks can and should come out if/when we inevitably make horrible signings or at least when substantively linked.
Not for a minute suggesting that we are actually in for him, all the indications are that we are not, but let's not pretend that all of that has stopped us signing players in the past!
We could do with getting a striker with the same sort of profile Deeney had when he signed . Relatively young , had potential and could score goals . Trouble is it took a while for Deeney to come to life and guess the Pozzos are after short term fixes to try and get us promoted.
Listen here Rob. I've got just two words to say to you. Automatic promotion. - Splott Fuxbury 20th May 2022
Time for Perica to make a reappearance. Perhaps Rasiak could come back as well. He could also do odd jobs around the stadium in the week to earn his keep.
Training with Newcastle's U23s, strong interest from us and Birmingham according to the Daily Mail. I'm sensing a last minute loan deal for him on deadline day and it's going to be glorious. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...-Jeff-Hendrick-Ciaran-Clark-training-23s.html
Or he’ll go to Birmingham and him and Troy will score against us whilst our lad Bayo and Barca bloke look all at sea.
