Emma Saunders sucking up to Jack Grealish was my find a river moment.

I feel like I did in 1986 wondering why England hadn't brought John Barnes on yet.

Lawrenson really is utterly gash. How can this man be termed an expert? He's been stealing a living for years.

EDIT: and Jenas second from bottom too. Hilarious.

The standard of refereeing and the use of VAR in the Euro's has been excellent. This is the way it should be, and really shows up the incompetent buffoons we have to put up with in the Premier League. Such a contrast. The only poor official I've seen so far in the Euros is Anthony Taylor with his pathetic awarding of a penalty for a next to nothing challenge.

Exactly. Rubbish VAR here has never been about the system. It’s about the fools using it.

Looks like this game is just the one for Vydra to get a goal off the bench for the Czechs and get into the first team. Very Vydra-esque chances, and Croatia have been poor.

EDIT: Bring him on for the pen!

Don't say that, you might upset the people on here who think VAR is an AI.

Ref gives penalty after consulting VAR for Lovren elbow on Schick. The commentators all saying no penalty, how’s he meant to jump, etc but for me that is stone wall. He’s elbowed the guy full bore in the face. Not about intentions at all but a foul anywhere on the pitch. Lovren is an experienced player and should have no complaints about that

Dion Dublin: Yes, he catches him in the face with his elbow but that's not a penalty. Dion, an elbow in the face is a foul. If it's a foul in the penalty area then it's a penalty. If there is any degree of intent then it's a red.

You’d be disappointed if that went against you I feel.

    Croatia haven’t turned up yet.

My Norwegian mate explained that the Danish accent in Scandi is equivalent to a Glaswegian accent in English. Very thick accent. I assume there must also be a bit of crossover between Deutsch and Dansk.

Rio Ferdinand also playing the 'intent' line. I'm shocked as he seems such a smart guy.

I know you’re right, but I think it’s sad that unintentional contact is deemed a foul these days. It’s just to take the judgment away from the ref.

It is sad, but you've got to be so careful with any sort of contact to the head these days. At least, it wasn't a knee-jerk decision or should I say elbow-jerk.

Yes but you could be careful with contact to the head and then not give a penalty.

Correct. I understand most Norwegian but if I try and speak with a Danish person I just give up. The further south in Denmark the harder it becomes for me.

And Icelandic to most Scandinavians is like Welsh to English speakers. A load of unintelligible words/noises with the odd English word thrown in. Usually a word to describe something that didn't exist several hundred years ago.

There'd be a bit, but I don't think it's that much. Since my German has improved I noticed I could pick out the occasional bits of Dutch, but I had to watch one of the Denmark Euro U21 games recently with Danish commentary and it still seemed completely alien. Very strange sounding language.

The doctor taking credit for saving Eriksen reference in the Guardian article @UEA_Hornet posted is German and was being interviewed in the German 'Bild' - his quotes will have been translated from German, not Danish.

I believe Icelandic is taken from very old Norwegian. The odd word I can pick up if I really concentrate. Finish is the one that gets me, it just sounds like they're just making it up as they go along.
Going back to Danish my Mrs said they speak with a potatoe in the back of their throat.

The etymology of Finnish is interesting. Nothing like the Scadinavian Languages. It's closest cousin is Estonian, with some similarities to Hungarian.

Yes we worked that earlier. It could of gone from German to Danish then English. Obviously it would be a nightmare to translate properly.

Funny you should say that the Finns say it's very similar sounding to Hungarian which is very odd considering.

I used to share an office with a bloke who was really into etymology, reading huge books on the origin of language, but could only speak English himself. Mind you, he was a very peculiar person. Borderline Aspergers. No social skills whatsoever.

Why does anyone bother with obeying any kind of Covid restrictions when tens of thousands of morons from across England and Scotland get on trains and buses just to stand around in the streets drinking cans?
