If they win this, then beat us and win their final game, and we also lose to Swansea, they'll only be a point behind us. Far too close for comfort. I'll be cheering on The Millers for this one.

It would have been more interesting to be only a few points ahead.

I was actually thinking about how it could have been more exciting, remember the Tranmere game? The Leicester play off game? Grimsby at home? Fulham away? Brighton away?

Millwall at home 1-0 with no fans isn't giving me the same feeling. Brentford and Swansea games could have been terrific spectacles, tense fiery games where winner takes all. Almost a shame to have missed out.

Speaking as a Watford fan, I want the weakest of the four teams to come up through the play-offs. The one that would theoretically pose the least problems to us next season.

But as a football fan, I’d love to see Brentford promoted. It would be a new team in the PL and I think they’d be a good addition. They probably deserve it too after all their near misses.

Having a stress free end of season works for me I’m afraid. Something quite relaxing knowing the job is done and can watch our games, hoping for a bit of a show but not worried if not, and others sweat over the one place left.

Whilst there are clearly teams I’d rather get promoted, the knowledge that at least one of Swansea or Bournemouth will be facing another season in the Championship is pretty sweet. If they both do, well that’s just a monster cherry on our promotion cake.

    Agreed.
I’d love to see Brentford promoted.

And think of the humungous marketing opportunities for the Premier League especially in the Far East.

    (Japanese) Hornets vs (Asian) Bees

What a life or death battle this fixture would bee

I'm sorry but, based on that video, I'm supporting Brentford from now on.

Staying in the EPL is a life or death matter for the Hornets, as Scott Duxbury alluded to.

The Cisco Kid must toughen up and take no prisoners next season.

I'd like Barnsley to get it, for both reasons.

Nice to see that some posters on here still care about lower division clubs, us being top 20 an' all.

I would like to see Barnsley or Brentford go up, Brentford would be next seasons Bournemouth when they first got promoted though, so it could all get a bit sickly. They’d be next seasons fairy tale for the media to latch on to. It would be interesting to see how much Brentford would spend, if they don’t spend a lot of money I could see them doing a Norwich, playing nice but completely ineffectual football, just like large parts of this season.

I suppose in the face of protests from their principled fans they'd have to commit to not accepting parachute payments. So probably very modest spending.

Not to mention, upon their inevitable relegation they’d have to donate the TV money they earned to charity, as heaven forbid they should be able to benefit from their promotion.

If Bmuff and Brentford both fail to go up, they will be in massive financial trouble. I for one don’t want either of them to go up.

In a perfect world the play off final is Barnsley vs Swansea. At which point I don’t care who goes up out of those two.

Just don’t want Brentford or Bmuff going up.

Whilst I don't want cheats to prosper, and it would be funny for a club like Bournemouth to fall down the leagues again, I'd still prefer either Brentford or Bournemouth to get promoted.

They are easier to get to, a great day out, and it I think the atmosphere would be slightly better when we play them.

    Why Brentford?

A lot of people were saying when we were behind them in the league what a well run club they are.

Wasn’t there an article on them recently about their financials and how much debt they are in.
Very similar to Bournemouth basically. If they don’t get Prem money this year, they will have a big financial deficit.

Maybe I dreamt the whole article, will try to find it though.

You’re possibly thinking about the fact their owner has invested about £100m into their infrastructure, but it more than pays for itself through their B team model and bringing very saleable assets through to the first team every season.

The whole point is that they have a very sustainable model that they’re trying to use to get to the PL, but they don’t need to get there.

If Muff do win the play offs, it would complete the most unlikely of trilogies of course.

Us, they and Norwich promoted together. Relegated together. Then promoted together again.

To save me looking, does anybody here know if this would be the first time all three relegated clubs would have gone straight back? I certainly can’t remember it happening before.

Yes since 3 up/down was introduced from the 1973/74 season this has never happened.

I read that as to cover the Covid shortfall they took some borrowing against future transfer income (something we do as a matter of course seemingly) so their liabilities went up (because they took on debt) but they have a significant cash balance as a result. I don’t see that as them being in any sort of financial difficulty, not to mention if they don’t go up they have a host of saleable assets anyway.

That’s what I mean though. If they don’t go up, they have to sell two out of Toney, Dasilva and Henry. Wasn’t getting at them going bust as a club, but they will have to sell two of their star players again just to balance the finances again.
