So last night my wife and daughter decided to watch a movie on Netflix called Penguin Bloom. I tried everything I could to get out of it as it was quite obviously a film perfect for my wife and daughter, but ended up sitting down with them to watch it fully expecting to be asleep within the hour.

I was fantastic. The only issue is the bloke who played the policeman from Walking Dead is the husband so every time he walks into a room I'm expecting a zombie to come running. Recommended.

Last night I finally got round to watching "Mike Bassett: England Manager" and I have to say I genuinely enjoyed it and was surprised that there were many laugh out loud moments (Pelé's 2nd cameo was a highlight).

I'm assuming that it was filmed at Leavesden but in the montage of Bassett's playing career, there was a brief clip of when he was a keeper and it's definitely the old Vicarage Road end and looks like 'genuine action' of a GK letting a howler I'm presuming taken when we were in Div 2 or lower anyone know if it is a real game and who it was?

Not for the squeamish and a predecessor of The Hunger Games with a little The Running Man (not Carol Reed's take on insurance fraud) thrown in. It immediately challenges the viewer and one of the greatest cinema taboos. Ultimately it settles into a far more gorier Lord of the Flies and survival of the fittest. Some cannot overcome their conditioning but for most the thin veneer of civilized behaviour is just that.

Now getting a 4K remaster from Arrow Films. Gattaca a science fiction set in a dystopian eugenic driven future is all about the triumph of the will. This too is getting a well deserved 4K upgrade. And remains entirely relevant to the current world in the use and progress of genetic engineering.

There is a good episode on Netflix of Explained about designer DNA and one of the guys they are interviewing said he was inspired by Gattaca!

I feel a bit of a fraud (I haven't actually seen it) but the Geordies are very complimentary about "Offside":

Red Sparrow. Bought the steelbook last year and gave it a spin the other week. Will be trading it on an appropriate forum once the pandemic is over.

From the opening premise that a company such as the Bolshoi would discard an etoile on the scrapheap I was starting to lose interest. Implausiblity. Plenty of violence and sex followed right in your face most of the time perhaps in a desperate attempt to garner attention from a meandering illogical plot. Topical certainly given the decline in relations between the West and Russia and topical as well for another empowered female assassin which seems rather popular following the tedious Atomic Blonde and Anna.

Even the performances of Jeremy Irons and Charlotte Rampling who must need the pay cheque cannot rescue this one. You can guess the plot twist halfway in. Subtle it is not.

Anyone see that Black Klansman thing the other night of C4?

We were quite looking forward to it, but it was a disappointment to be honest. Cifriana liked it and yes, it was fairly funny in parts, but I thought it could have been done so much better.

It was supposed to draw parallels with Trump, but apart from an 'America First bit, it really didn't and so all the anti-Trump stuff was tacked right on to the very end.

We know there's going to be racist language and lots of it, but boy this has a surfeit. It is overflowing with it. A bit too much I thought. A bit too much airing of KKK self-justification arguments too - I could see white people watching that and thinking they agree with the Klan.

The portrayal of the Klansmen was very clumsy. The backwards hillbilly 'haw haw haw' that was in the background of their discussions all the time, could have been in a comic. Meanwhile David Duke and the retiring President of the Klan branch came across as almost likeable. Very clumsy and unbelievable characters.

Finally, nobody, no matter how much of a stupid Klan backwards hillbilly would EVER believe that the black detective's voice on the phone was anything like the white detective who showed up at the meetings. There's just no way. Daniel Washington obviously can't do different voices very well.

Clumsy sensationalism, mildly amusing in places: 5/10

Watched "Thunder Force" with my wife. Both of us had very low expectations.

It didn't even meet those. Would suggest avoiding it, even at the low, low cost of free.

Watched this last night, absolutely horrific in every way. In the modern age when there are such great films out there how do they get away with utter utter sh*t like this?
Made it to 30 minutes which was 29 too long.

I have to confess I thought it was very good and exciting. Improbable as it appears, it is at least based on a true story, though it clearly takes some liberties with the events.

I’m not sure how we are supposed to feel about Stallworth spying on the liberation movement, though typically for Spike Lee he let’s us decide.

I think that the portrayal of white people is generally good and avoids the dreadful cliches of white evil in productions like ‘Lovecraft Country’ which is beyond awful. That’s typical of Lee, who far from being anti-white has seemed pretty balanced right back to ‘Do the right thing’. However, it’s not surprising that the language is hurtful. It is fecking nasty.

But I got swept away in simply enjoying it and so maybe my dwindling critical faculties were having time off.

Thought this was visually amazing, but his relationship with the octopus was a bit weird. Wonder how his wife and kids felt about his obsession with an Octopus.

There was definitely an almost sexual element to it, but I thought the intelligence of the octopus was incredible. Also found it a bit sad that an animal which is effectively solitary for its entire existence, could actually bond with someone and enjoy their company.

  35. If anybody is into quirky, surreal and charming, The Man In The Hat is a lovely way to while away an hour and a half. Hardly any dialogue, but Ciaran Hinds' facial expressions more than compensate, plus some wonderful scenery (wouldn't be surprised if the French tourist board had some input.)

On the other hand, Made in Italy has got to be up there with the worst stinkers of all time. Managed 30 minutes before the clunky dialogue, Liam Neeson phoning it in and his son being a really **** actor, and Lindsay Duncan having the worst lines she can ever have been expected to speak, forced me to hit the stop button.

    Both on Amazon.
