I’m not their biggest fan but is there really any need for that? Mods, delete this comment and I demand a separate memorial thread for **** and Dom’s careers.

The Archbishop of Canterbury has said he hopes Phillip will inspire people, so in that spirit I'm going to make crass racist comments whenever I go in the local shop, get a taxi, order a curry, or encounter a Scottish person.

Hey, we just said goodbye to Mrs Moose’s mum and while we were there in person, the old dear would have been chuffed at all the hits she got on YouTube.

I sense a business opportunity for someone. All that substandard, discarded PPE could now be turned into black armbands rather than end up in landfill.

No doubt Nicola Sturgeon will be demanding something patently crazy and completely unreasonable, such as the next Duke of Edinburgh being a scot.

They've all starting to gather outside Buck House despite the fact that the news came from Windsor. Hopefully, the Met Police will show restraint and not go tearing in breaking up a non-socially distanced, potentially unruly mob.

Diana died on a Sunday morning. We had a "very informal" golf society meeting at Uxbridge that morning with about 15 of us there. The clock radio alarm was as you say light military music, I thought I'd accidentally tuned in to radio 4. One of the chaps announced we would be having a minutes silence in her memory but was roundly derided for his thoughts. It was a very awkward moment but the rest of us felt it wasn't right.
Two weeks later, on the day of her funeral one of the boys was getting married, how that for timing! To get around the very strange events of the day they decided to have a minutes silence at the church which was totally respected and a much better time to do such a thing.
The funeral procession after the service with the car being covered in flowers is still really clear to me.

All programming on BBC’s One and Two devoted to Prince Phillip tonight.

Can anyone who believes the BBC is ‘left wing’ please go and give themselves a sharp cuff around the head.

I personally think it befits the occasion to see so many people who live their lives permanently at half mast gathered together like that.

I really cannot understand how people get so upset about the death of people they don’t know. Have some empathy yes but those that camped outside George Michael’s house or those that were in genuine hysterics when Diana died?? Each to their own...I can only presume that they haven’t lost somebody very close to them

To be fair, I think the death of Diana was entirely different - went suddenly and violently, way before her time, leaving behind two young children. I did feel very sad about that. As for Prince Philip, it is sad for the Queen and his immediate family but 99 is a great innings. It’s not exactly a shocking and untimely death. I understand why the news channels are covering it so extensively but don’t really understand why radio 1 and the like have suspended their programming for the whole day.

So people who knew nothing about him are offended by other people saying stuff who also knew nothing about him. Is this correct?

Slow down there. This is not a simple as you make it sound. Bargain Hunt and Pointless were both bumped today for the excruciating BBC crap about this man who somehow lived longer than 99% of people and who few people actually liked.

I'm bereft that I didn't get to see Charles Hanson excitedly flogging some tat for the reds and blues at 1215 today.

Yes! I'm not the only one who's discustid at this!

I remember when Are Di become an angle and the radio stations went mental for the whole day. All playing some weird, depressing dirges. Had to listen to some pirate radio station in the end playing jungle and dubstep.

It's like we've woken up in 1952 or something.

After everything that's happened this year, it's a bizarre reaction to the death of an unpopular, privileged racist who lived a full and long life.

Hold on. Jimmie Krankie is actually a woman. Help. I feel distinctly nauseous.

We just need the cause of death to be put down to a blood clot after he had the AZ vaccine earlier this year, and the country will implode.

All the wailing and gnashing of teeth has eased my nervousness about the game this evening. Is it right for me to be relaxed?
