In fairness to Gray, we have no reason to question his commitment or influence on the pitch, just his ability. I'd be far more willing to give someone a pass for this if it weren't coming from the one player who has constantly undermined every manager up to an including Ivic (and probably Xisco too if we're being honest)

Just showed the video to my 12 year old son and he's now gone out looking for former Watford managers to glass. Terrible role model Deeney out disgrace coyh

For all our benefit, is there any way we can hide this thread from Moosegasm before he sees it?

Or he could've said he'd stamp on their head after someone else knocked them to the ground - that would be so hilarious!

I'd also say that my money would be on Ivic if Deeney ever squared up to him. He's a classic bully - happy to squeeze Joe Allen's head or elbow Lucas Torreira but is ever so subservient when he comes up against a Kompany or a Van Dijk, or indeed any other player that is physically imposing.

It says a lot that we're even having a discussion about our captain and talisman - previously jailed for array after a brawl - saying he'd glass two former managers.

Joke or not, does this happen at other clubs? Would any other club put up with this?

    Those are serious questions.

I genuinely don't think any other club would stand for this. It's representative of how broken the Watford player power culture is/was. We don't need personalities like this at Watford, get him out of here.

How crap is it that we have a guy who is one of our highest appearances and goals for the club and yet he’s the first person I want us to sell / release in the summer.

Such a sad situation really. I just don’t think he’s good for the team - as a player, captain or just himself the man. I’d rather he went now and in a few years time we can look back at the good times with him.

Unfortunately I think next season will be the ‘Troy Deeney Show’ again in the top flight. The team will be stifled all year long and we’ll get relegated.

Maybe all of us are seeing it wrong and those at the club know better.

To come out and joke about glassing two former managers, even if it's just a comment on an informal chat with fans, is just so unnecessary and out of order, and is a window into his true personality. And coming from someone who has previously been jailed for alcohol-related violence... what exactly is going through his head to make him say that? At best, it's stunningly crass.

Troost-Ekong's interview on Hive Live the other day was exactly how a captain should be. Leading by example on and off the pitch. Putting the team ahead of any personal concerns. Praising others while being modest about your own contribution.

Troost-Ekong or Cleverley are proper captaincy material. If they don't make the team next year, give it to Hughes or Chalobah who are also made of the right stuff.

I can't believe I'm saying this as I used to idolise the guy, but I pray that by some miracle Deeney's contract is up at the end of the year after all. Any love I had for him has gone and I just want him out the club immediately.

If we get promoted and if indeed he does have one year left I can see us paying up his contract and letting him go.

If he's on the reported 70k we're looking at £3.5m minimum.

The bloke is an idiot and as others have said just lacks any real class or self-awareness. Even if he is joking he needs to be aware of his standing and what is and isn't ok to say in a public/digital forum

It's all so sad how TD is fast losing the respect of many Watford fans who once idolised him.

Please just accept gracefully that you are no longer the player you once were Troy and leave us with all the happy memories we have of you, instead of doing your best to drive us all away and sully all those good memories mate :(

Let us fans have good memories of you and not bad ones that you are currently doing your best to proliferate right now.

AFAIK you wouldn't necessarily pay up the full amount, usually because a player would be free to find another club and would be able to earn elsewhere immediately (assuming they found something), it all depends upon what's in the contract and that could be negotiated. As I say I reckon that if we got promoted, we may do it as it would be (a) affordable and (b) if he's not good enough for the Championship, he'll be no use to us in the Premier League; all on top of the fact that he is unlikely to be a positive person to have behind the scenes anyway.

I say this a fair bit and don't want to sound like a nob, but I work in a football club so I know the inner workings.

My take on it is that every football club has at least 4/5 Deeney style outspoken idiots. They are wrapped in cotton wool by the comms team and heavily managed to make sure they don't say anything stupid and if they do the comms team make sure it doesn't get anywhere.

When we were trying to grow our fanbase, the club clearly decided that Deeney and his outspoken 'honesty' was good for Watford from a marketing/PR POV, which i'd broadly agree with. I don't know about you, but family I have in America would even comment on how funny he was when I saw them and reference things like his 'Cojones' speech. However as time has gone on, he's become almost 'bigger' than the club and the comms team have lost control.

    That's my take anyway.

The most surprising thing to me now is when I'm asked who i support it's not ohhhhhhhhhhh Elton John, its ohhhhhhhh Deeney. It's amazing how well known he is and it's saddening that he has taken the mantle of the great GT and EJ combination. Hopefully equilibrium will be resumed in the future.

It's funny that we joked on here about the "Cult of Gino", but the "Cult of Deeney" is very much a real thing.

There is 100% a good portion of our fanbase who, for whatever reason, are bigger supporters and fans of Deeney than the club, particularly on social media. They will blindly and fiercely defend him no matter how he performs, what he says, what he does and how detrimental and/or insulting it is to the club and/or it's fans. Everything will be weakly excused, everything will be played down and everything will be "you're not a true fan!" if you dare say a bad word about him, even if there is blatant evidence to logically have a gripe with him. All made worse by the fact that the club are such weak, pathetic enablers of him as well.

    Truly bizarre.

Whilst true, it also goes the other way and is the same with most things online in that peoples views have to be in the extreme one way or another. Some won't see anything bad said about Deeney - some won't see anything good said about him.

I've never seen anyone deny the positive impact he's had in the past. I absolutely cannot stand the bloke any more but even for me that only started a couple of years ago, and I still won't deny that he was previously a great player for us. It's just that whatever good he's done doesn't excuse the reality of the present or wipe out the frequent, idiotic things he says. Bizarrely, there are those who genuinely believe it does.

  23. leighton buzzard horn

He does divide opinion between those who think he is great and those who would do anything to see him gone. For what it is worth I know he's a very good influence around the training ground and is held in high regard by teammates and the club, so the nonsense made up about him picking the team and being disruptive etc is disappointing but it goes with the territory with modern day life.

The comments this week were stupid. He isn't the first footballer to say something stupid and certainly won't be the last but the comments this week were in poor taste. I also think we as a club should have moved on from Deeney a year or two ago...but if you were him you wouldn't walk away from a contract as big as his. I'm more bothered by the clubs mistakes on that front than Deeney shooting his mouth.

This the sort of thing that I mean, though. We don't need to point this sort of stuff out or lightly excuse him with it. He needs to be held accountable and for all of his idiotic comments and behaviour but he very rarely ever is.

  25. leighton buzzard horn

    leighton buzzard horn Squad Player

It's not excusing him - it's just a fact of life. I would expect the club have had a word with him and told him it was a step too far. How would you want him held accountable for it? What would you deem a suitable punishment?

I wouldn't expect an apology for not liking them but would expect an apology for the violent messaging used about it. If he said "Neither, I didn't get on with either of them." you would still raise an eyebrow but it wouldn't be egregious as players are allowed opinions about how they've worked for. Saying you'd glass someone in his position and ambition to be seen as a role model is completely unacceptable language and conduct. Maybe fine a week's wages but I genuinely doubt Troy would care much about that bit.

    A public hanging would suffice.

Yeah, but you won't ever catch me arguing against the fact that he was clearly a complete w*nker. I just enjoyed him a lot as a footballer.

Probably around 2017 or 2018 when it started to become clear that both his ego and weight were beginning to spiral out of control, as his performances began to drop off.
