I'd rather Ngakia than Femenia in the Prem, Femenia just gets caught out far too often for a team battling down the bottom

Where have I said I think it's better? I'm just saying there's a better chance than 'no hope'. I've said we would need to make smart additions and we would struggle - but I don't think its a certainty that our current best XI would get relegated.

I don't want to revel in other teams suffering bad injuries, but that's a huge blow to Brentford, I really was expecting them to come back soon

OK not sure why you mentioned Newcastle then but no problem, you think we'd have a chance of staying up as-is, I don't. Hopefully we'll strengthen significantly without breaking the bank.

Perhaps it's just gut instinct and we see what we want to see... But Capoue was openly courting a move abroad, said he'd changed his mind and was going to work to get us promoted etc, and then save for his very last game where he looked like he was trying again, looked very half powered. Citing that Doucoure got torn apart by Man City is hardly news, but so did Mr Capoue... why the difference in status? And once Capoue had left, Hughes back into CM and the rest is well discussed. I'm sure I'm not the only one to notice the improvements coincide with losing a well paid wantaway higher profile player.

Agree Femenia is great going fwd but a liability when defending. Not sure Ngakia is prem standard yet but we may get to see.

Because I don't think there's a huge gulf between us and them in terms of starting XI - and as it stands they are staying up. I have no issue with the argument it would be hard for us to stay up and we'd very likely struggle. But relegation wouldn't be a certainty.

Moot argument at this point anyway - and we both agree that we would need to strengthen a fair old bit.

I don't think next season will be so easy to stay up in fairness, West Brom and Fulham both had a lot to do to get their squads looking competitive, and while they have belatedly achieved that, it's looking too little too late. There's often a team who looks comfortable one season and before failing miserably the season after (Sheffield United this season, us last season and Huddersfield maybe the season before), but I don't think we can bank on anyone collapsing like that. We would have a Norwich side to contend with, who will surely be in a much better position to actually try to survive next season, and whoever comes through the play-offs (who on paper we shouldn't really be worried about)

Doucoure yes, Pereyra on and off. Maybe we need to learn when to get rid if possible. These two should probably have gone after the cup final season

You're totally right about Capoue this season. He didn't want to play in the Championship but he would've happily stayed at the club if we hadnt been relegated. We are much better off with Hughes as he has a much better mentality. Personally I wouldnt compare Capoue leaving after relegation to Doucs' behaviour when we were in the prem.

How many of those games were under Ivic, playing 442 and lumping the ball to Deeney?

presume you are a “will only celebrate when we are mathematically promoted” kinda guy which is fair enough. I’m a “we are 10 points clear, with 6 to go, having only been beaten once in the last 13 games and that was through a bloody outrageous free kick decision and of the only two teams that really could catch us one has lost their last 4 and the other has drawn their last 4” kinda guy

How many of those games were under Ivic?

Only 4 of them. 3 losses 1 draw.

Munoz has overseen 3 wins 2 losses and 1 draw.

So clearly anything is possible in our final games.

Capoue was injured, Doucoure bailed out of most of the season even though he was on the pitch!

About B, you could say that about most of our team last season, but many of them are no longer at the club or only became regulars last season as a recent signing or returning after a long absence, and declined after an all-too brief spell of good form (Sarr, Masina, Chalobah). Of those who’d been regulars in previous seasons and had a noticeable dip in form over the season as a whole compared to previous seasons, Kiko is the only one who strikes me as one who can get back to previous competent levels. Deeney needs no explanation, Gray never had much form to begin with, and Cathcart is a back-up at best. Kiko strikes me as more a confidence player than someone who was just woefully out of his depth, and players in the latter stages of their career can have resurgences (look at Capoue and Holebas in 2018/19). I think some are hasty in writing him off, he could prove to be a rejuvenated player at the top level thanks to his confidence-boosting performances this season and has lost none of his pace.

From category A, Pedro, Sierralta, Zinckernagel and maybe Sema could fit the bill.

i remember watching Kiko walk off the pitch and down the tunnel leaving us with only 10 men on this pitch and no substitute it didn’t look like he gave a toss at that point never wanted to see him play again for Watford.

this season has been a revelation he looks like he actually cares and has been devastating with Sarr , I’d give him another chance in the prem , think him and quite a few other players have stuck by us when they could have left and deserve another shot (don’t get me wrong I’m not including Deeney and Gray in this)

I suggest everybody enjoys the last 6 games in which we are likely to be promoted, because the unusually quiet BWs will be out in full force next season in the Prem, when we are losing every other week and not signing £30 mill players left right and centre.

i think it was two or three seasons ago, can’t remember who it was against , we had used all of our subs and he went down injured (fair enough), but didn’t wait for the physio just walked off and went down the tunnel.

think it was in one of our dodgy spells

Franks said yesterday that they are both out. Henry may not play again this season. Dasilva may be the same, but could return earlier.

so by my logic, if Munoz repeats that win/draw/lose ratio in the final 6 games then we will definitely be promoted....

But was there a reason for these players being dreadful last season
I often wondered whether there was a toxic atmosphere in the squad and do feel it also continued into the early part of this season.
It did seem as though managers were being used as scapegoats rather than facing the real issues and if so I could understand why some players may loose heart and even respect for the club.

Im sure there's a lot of truth in what you are saying about last season. Players did report a great team spirit at the beginning of this season which then collapsed and reached its low point for the Coventry game. By all accounts the team spirit then bounced back after Troy's injury.

Not sure you've been following the arguments. The next set of accounts will be the time for panic as opposed to £30m signings.

Brentford are almost certainly going to need to suddenly hit the equivalent to league winning form and get an absolute minimum of 15 points from their final 7 games.

That's the same points per game of around 100 points for the season, and to be honest 15 probably still wouldn't even be enough, as you'd expect us to do far better than slumpimg to a point per game in our final 6.

Could have been a relegation hangover as well, which wasn't helped by the much shorter than usual break between seasons.

Norwich may have had one as they ended last season with ten straight defeats IIRC and only picked up four points from their first four, losing at home to Derby in the process! But unfortunately for us it didn't last long.

But if there was a problem in the dressing room (and in my opinion it did feel like that was the case and was reflected in the players persona on the pitch) then it could be a reason why some of the better players would think what's the point and look to get to a new opportunity.
I think it might be unfair to judge some players for trying to get to their true potential in what is a short career window if the club they are in isn't allowing them to excel.
I think the club system may have been just as much a factor as the so called turncoats
