Hayden Mullins has just been appointed manager at Colchester United, who are languishing in 21st in League 2.

I was surprised when Mullins joined Colchester United that he was dropping down to League 2 for just an assistant's job (particularly as Kewell got a L2 job having left a similar role here with less experience and a lesser reputation than Mullins). I was also surprised that Colchester didn't appoint Mullins when they sacked their previous manager a month or so ago. Pleased he has got the gig now. A tough ask for him though with Colchester on a torrid run of form and only just above the drop zone. Good luck to him.

Their 3rd manager of the season.

Maybe Hayden will be the lucky one!

How mad is it that this guy was our manager for two of the most important games we've ever had. Imagine thinking that was the best way of keeping us up?

    Absolutely crackers.

Good luck to Mullins keeping Colchester up and making them promotion contenders again.

They had this amazing spell less than 15 years ago when they won promotion to the second tier for the first time in their history, finishing 2nd after an incredible run of 20 wins in 22 games in all competitions (knocking out Sheffield United and Derby in the FA Cup) and then did even better when they only missed out on the Championship play-offs on the last day, after winning 11 home league games in a row, including dispatching the Scummers 4-1 during their swift plummet towards the Conference. They've fallen quite a lot since then...

Think they lost in the play-offs last season and really have had a bad reaction to that I guess.

Mind you not the worse team in Essex in that league..

Didn't Boothroyd go there after us?

Yes, and he did quite well there but finished poorly and this cost them a play-off place - this has been a story at all the clubs he's managed, at least he managed a promotion out of us!

Boothroyd went there after us before Coventry and Northampton all lower league provincial clubs, they have a neat little stadium just next to the A12, much better than their old crumbling Layer Road, good luck Hayden hope you keep them up!

Sounds a bit like his current job - do well for a bit but when it comes to the crunch fail!

I remember Boothroyd got Northampton to the play-off final one year then they were bottom of the league when he got sacked which is what everyone uses to rubbish him with now.

And the fact we played "hoofball" when getting promoted - I don't think he tries to get the Under 21s to play that now.

Remember Layer Road - we went 2 down but then comeback to win 3-2.

King, O'Toole score and Priskin scored.

Been past he new ground as we have relatives in Essex (my dad use to go and watch Southend as a boy - very long time ago probably in the same league as they are in now!)

Best of luck Hayden. Good guy, deserves a shot and I hope this is the beginning of his rise up the football pyramid. Has Stack gone too?

Wow yes, I’d forgotten. Seems amazing to think back now. Hopefully won’t be saying that about Watford in 15 years time.

That was really from a bygone era. Earlier this millennium, even clubs as small as Wycombe might have stayed up comfortably for at least one season, but even the bigger clubs promoted from League 1 tend to struggle (look at the teams that went up from League 1 last season, all in the bottom five) and a team going straight through the Championship or finishing in or around the play-offs is an increasingly rare phenomenon. Only very occasionally these days do you see a promoted club performing miracles, like tiny Burton who recently stayed up easily when they looked dead certs for relegation. Maybe that's due to the fact the gap between the Championship and the Prem has got smaller, so the gulf in class between the Champ and League 1 has got bigger?

The Championship is still a fun place to be, but I miss the days when you got minnows like Crewe, Stockport and Gillingham holding their own.

I wonder if it'll return to what it was 10-15 years ago? I think a big factor which led to the gulf between L1 and the Championship (which is about as big as the Championship to the Premier League but without vast riches to help teams compete) was that the Championship still had teams like Brum, Stoke etc who were spending way beyond their means, way beyond what Rotherham and Wycombe can spend, but who were stuck in the Championship, but with Covid, I wonder if the smaller teams who live within their means are better able to ride it out, while some of the bigger clubs crash and burn like Sunderland?

Out of interest, do you look this stuff up before posting it or is it committed to memory? I ask out of vague admiration for your ability to recall the most obscure details about seasons that I’ve long forgotten.

Both, I remembered the basic facts about them winning promotion to the 2nd tier back then and doing so well the following season, and winning a helluva lot of games at one point, but I had to consult Wikipedia to find out/remind me of the exact facts. Back then still relatively early in my being a football fan, I was really interested in lower league/non-league football - still am to some extent, and I sometimes check to see how the teams in the National League are doing, but offhand I couldn't tell you the top three teams in League 2. I guess that's thanks to the Pozzos and Watford for making me really interested in the club again (for better or for worse) after the doldrums of the post-Boothroyd years!

You look at some of the most famous seasons we have had back in the sixties and seventies and you see clubs that now hang about at the bottom holding their own in the upper parts of the pyramid and their surges up it. Like Northampton, Shrewsbury, Port Vale. The game seems to becoming more stratified and it is linked more and more to TV revenue. Granted this season is still a bit of an outlier in having two of the relegated PL clubs running first and second in the table.

Poor bar steward, just googled, Colchester are on the cusp of league elimination. What did he ever do to deserve probably one of the worst league managers jobs you could get.

In my opinion it's not a patch of Layer Road which was a proper little ground. The new one is 4 boring uniform stands stuck out in the middle of nowhere.

Layer Road was the scene of perhaps the greatest Cup upset in my memory when, as a 4th Div side they beat the great Leeds United team 3-2. I only went there once when we drew them in the Cup and the thing I remember most was that they didn’t have enough turnstiles open.

I come from an era even more bygone, when the only club ever to have gone from the third tier to the first was Charlton, between 1934 and 1936.* It has since become more common, but TV money and parachute payments have made it highly unlikely again.

*I wasn't around in 1934-6, but when it was known to be the only time it had been done.

It should be remembered that years ago it was much harder to move through the divisions. Not only were there no play-offs before the late 80s, but there was only 2 up and 2 down before the mid-70s. Watford took nearly half a century to reach Div 2 but had many seasons where they finished high enough to have been in the play-offs had such a system existed then.

League 2 seems to be the last step where money doesn't make all the difference, Colchester made the play-offs last season, yet are in relegation trouble this season, a lot of big teams in League 1 who despite their problems seem to always take a spot in the upper parts of the table, but League 2 seems a lot more unpredictable

  31. WillisWasTheWorst

I’m not sure that’s entirely true. Look at the heavily funded former non-league clubs who have flashed straight through League 2 when they got there, like Fleetwood, Crawley and others.

  32. Hogg-DEENEY!!!

That was a while ago tbf, Crawley are back as a mediocre League 2 side now. Salford are well-backed yet are mid-table, Bolton are getting to grips with the division finally but again, aren't exactly storming it

So, while we were celebrating a hewge win last night, Hayden Mullins oversaw an similarly ginormous Essex derby victory over Southend, which basically sees Colchester safe and condemns Southend to non-league, ex-Hornet youngster Michael Folivi scored too
