Lol. I have to admit that I switched off a while back. But I’m fortunate enough to be able to work from home. If you run any kind of business or work in a non essential shop/hospitality/leisure etc you’d still be glued to it.

Will they delay giving people the 2nd jab or carry on with that ?

Or save vaccines to give those who haven’t had one at all a chance to get theirs ?

I’m under 50 and just received my notification to book my jab. Interesting how different locations of the country are ‘performing’.

I think one of the main reasons for the projected slow-down of first dose levels during April is to ensure all second doses falling due during that month are administered. Otherwise they fear a lot of the benefits already gained will be reduced.

2588 positive results from 4.6 million lateral flow tests in schools. Positivity rate 0.06%. Absurdly low.

Sounds good, but I really do question the reliability of the LFTs, and specifically the ones done within schools. Speaking from personal experience, the children mostly aren't doing it properly, staff are trained with a 10 minute online course, and control tests (no sample) come back as negative, rather than void.

The school I work in haven't had a positive case since January. That's staff, VK children, and since reopening. Inexplicable, especially considering the rates in the general population a couple months back.

I agree they should ditch the unreliable LFTs and just get on with things.

Wonder if Bolsonaro is still telling Brazilians to stop whining ? Public health systems near collapse in intensive care across several regions.

And thanks to ignoramuses and those who do not care probable third waves in several countries across the globe with the potential for another unpleasant variant to spring up. The Tanzanian PM passed away this week. A vehement COVID denier and complete moron. Safe to say his passing is unlikely to be mourned by many in that country. Ironically his own passing may be down to the very thing he denied existed.

The 'intellektwells' were all at yesterday's lockdown protest march:

In view of the current movement to allow mass gatherings in the current lockdown, so long as it's in a protest against something, I'm thinking of arranging a mass gathering for a protest in favour of banning mass gatherings.

    Free speech and all that?

I know they're Sunday figures but while cases went up slightly week on week, deaths dropped to 17. The vaccine has clearly had a massive effect.

It seems the daily cases has stubbornly stayed around the 5k to 6k mark for the last couple of weeks but that could be in part due to the fact that 1.5m+ tests are now being done daily.

As you say, the number of tests have been ramped up massively. The positively rate is dropping though. 2.2% of all tests in England in the last 7 days compared to 2.5% a week ago and 5.3% four weeks ago.

Can't see the issue. I was told that as I was working with bodily fluids I had to have my hep jabs (this list has grown)... Shirley all front line social / medical care staff have to get 'done'?

ISTR medical students get all their jabs done in their first term at medical school (same for dentists, nurses and I would assume vets).

A year today since the first lockdown started.

Let’s hope it’s not long till the end of the last one.I

Seems that care employers are requiring it anyway - just a reinforcement of that.

    Good idea, IMO.

Not disagreeing with the sentiment but higher cases won't result in more hospital admissions and deaths for a couple of weeks due to the lag

When talking about Cuba-US relations with English people, especially officials like politicians, I censor myself and use their preferred gentle term 'embargo' rather than 'blockade' because from experience I know that even 'embargo' is a bit strong for them and makes them frown, while use of 'blockade' immediately marks you out as a mouth-foaming lunatic.

I notice however that for Johnson, The Daily Mail and the rest of the right wing chums, the EU threat over vaccine exports is immediately, completely and unequivocally a blockade of the very worst type.

It’s ok Clive. Once the EU spy planes catch sight of the extra nukes Chairman Johnson has ordered they’ll be flapping.

They mean two different things Clive.
"Blockade" fits the description perfectly well in the case of the EU preventing goods leaving their territory. The dictionary will read the same whether the reader is left or right wing.

I disagree. A "blockade" usually means blocking entry into, and exit from, another countries territory, such as a port, for all goods and people. An "embargo" usually means preventing specific goods leaving your own territory for export to another country by legal edict.

The word blockade is far more aggressive and associated with war. Embargoes are to do with trade disputes and is a much better description of what the EU is doing.

It doesn't mean what the EU is doing is right but the aggressive rhetoric on both sides is unhelpful imo.

I actually think the U.K. government has been (surprisingly) emollient about the situation. The media is a different story.

The EU has already inserted the need for reciprocal exports of vaccines OR critical elements of the supply chain into the EU to be in place to declare a country as participating in adequate reciprocity. As UK is and has been supplying lipids required for the Pfizer vaccine into the EU, there is little basis for them invoking action against it. I think the heads of state have already found a way to garner more powers as a headline sop to counter the high level of criticism being levelled at the Commission whilst leaving adequate loopholes to avoid ever having to actually launch any kind of ‘war’.

Yes, it is all about politics and how individual European leaders can sell it to their people as them being tough without actually doing anything in reality.

Here is an interesting thread on how, and why, the EU and it's member states got into this mess. Its main conclusion is that the EU was naive not to have an "EU first" clause in the contracts for vaccines produced within it's member countries.... something the UK and US have done and benefitted greatly from:
