Sorry it’s the mail but maybe an issue some have found personally.

It’s tragic and sad no matter how they died.

Might sound stupid but would it make much difference if non COVID reasons are given now ?

What can be gained - compensation? Ease of mind ? Form of justice ?

Are they questing the treatment given in hospital maybe .

There is little doubt that the numbers are not accurate and where doctors are stretched it must be difficult to make a proper "diagnosis" particularly where doctors have only had limited contact, with the deceased, and where covid may be only one of a number of ailments the person was suffering from. I'm sure there is no conspiracy to boost the covid deaths but maybe a personal propensity to "blame" covid as a path of least resistance sometimes.

I think there is little doubt that some countries have hidden their covid deaths, though. There are massive inconsistencies across the piste when comparing the number of covid tests, cases and deaths. But that is a different side to the story.

I am not sure why it is thought by some that a covid death has a degree of stigma attached to it. Personally it wouldn't matter to me if a close relative's (or myself) death was attributed to covid when it may of only had a small contributory effect - the end result is the same, but I can understand others feeling differently.

That’s odd, the post you are quoting comes up as from me, but it was actually @wfc4ever.

I think that is just the Mail trying to play Covid down again and using that story as an angle. An unnamed northern undertaker is one of their ‘sources’? Forgive me if I’m wrong, but as far as I’m aware undertakers deal with dead bodies and whether it says Covid or not on the deceased’s death certificate, how would an undertaker know if it was the real cause of death or not? Also rather convenient they aren’t named, so basically it’s just some random made up person to try and add a bit of credibility.

I can’t imagine most people would care if that was given as cause of death or not? But if anything I’d imagine people would rather Covid was given as the cause of death if in fact it really was, more so than people are likely to care if it’s given and it really wasn’t.

Ultimately Covid deaths happen overwhelmingly in those with pre existing conditions and/or the elderly. There just isn’t the time or the resources to examine in great detail if Covid was the biggest factor, or not, in every single death. The nature of a novel virus like this is that there will always be some over reporting or under reporting, because it’s always going to be difficult to prove conclusively in every case whether it was the overwhelming factor, the straw that broke the camels back or unlikely to have contributed and just a coincidence.

Take your point about the anonymous source, but undertakers speak to family members and probably pick up something of a life story and understanding of their charge’s demise.

I agree it’s all pretty meaningless though. At this point, I’m not sure policy is being driven by deaths but instead by hospital admissions.

Lowest number of cases since September recorded today and 20 million vaccines done.

    Looks very promising.

Apparently the authorities are looking for someone who has had a Brazilian.

While I agree it’s unwise, especially on a fella, I didn’t know it was illegal.

Unfortunately, the problem is that it does matter. Only a couple of years ago the UK had its "measles free" designation removed, and this is entirely down to the rise of anti-vaxxer ******** rhetoric.

The observed reality is that people refusing to get inoculated against infectious diseases put not only themselves in danger, but other people too. At that point the question becomes whether the public interest is on the side of public health or individual choice.

Personal freedoms are good, but once that freedom starts actively infringing on the life and wellbeing of others in a dangerous fashion there's a damn good case to rein it in. That's the underlying principle of our criminal justice system, after all: your right to throw a punch ends where my nose begins.

You're certainly entitled to. It's a somewhat uncomfortable area to be operating in, I fully agree.

Finally something good comes out of being in lockdown. Got my first speeding ticket (that’s not the good bit) but, instead of having to trek over to a centre and spend 4 hours on a speed awareness course, I simply log in to a digital classroom from the comfort of my own home for 2.5 hours.

This seems like one of those weird policy dead ends that sometimes pop up and serve to only undermine things:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-56321537

Everyone knows lateral flow tests have limitations but do serve some purpose. False positives in a low-case environment as we have currently are a higher probability. So the obvious answer is any child who tests positive from there should head off to the local testing centre to have it double-checked by a higher grade test. Yet apparently any child who tests positive from one of these lateral flow tests this week cannot override it by getting a negative PCR test afterwards. So they and their whole household has to isolate for a fortnight.

But only for this week. From next week they'll be able to and indeed expected to get a PCR test to confirm the lateral flow test result.

    Eh?!

I'm sure everyone who said you can't compare our death count to other countries as it's different absolutely won't be comparing the UK vaccine rollout to other countries

My Brother in Law told me he wouldn't be having the vaccination. He works in a hospital. I asked him his reasons and he's made up something in his head that the next range of vaccines will be more efficient and only require one dose. How do you reason with that?

I presume not on the front line as you’d think they would want protection of some sort ASAP.

I watched Sturgeon and the Welsh bloke outlining the list of things that people can and can't do the other evening. Laughable. Has it not dawned on these politicians that nobody is listening any more?

That's an odd reason to hold out but I think it is true that there's some coming online soon that only need one dose. Johnson & Johnson has one approved in the US and in the pipeline with regulators over here with 30m doses on order.
