Think we missed Deeney a little as well as Sierralta, purely in terms of defending corners.

So now we need Deeney in the side to defend? o_O

Deeney would've been better keeping the ball around the corner flag in their half, not that I wanted to see us do that against the likes of Derby (no disrespect meant).

3 wins out of 3 - not too shabby.
We have been riding our luck in many games, but the Championship is week this season.
If Sheff Utd, WBA and Fulham are relegated from the Premier league then getting promotion next season would be very, very difficult.
For Norwich, Bournemouth and Watford it is this season or bust. Well, not so much Norwich on the financial side, but massive for Watford and Bournemouth on the money front.
Bachmann was flapping more than a Trafalgar Square pigeon. He is well known for this at other clubs. Is he beginning to revert to type?
We need a decent CB to play along side FS, someone creative in midfield and a goalscorer with height and pace - not much to ask for.
Let's see what the next few games bring us.

It’ll be harder/worse next season if we don’t go up because of our financial situation, not because of who will come down.

Three teams have to be relegated from premier league, there is nothing we can do about that. Right now they would be the best three to be relegated, because their current points totals suggest they are the three worst teams in the division.

it’s the same every season, the worst three teams get relegated and Sheffield Utd, WBA and Fulham are not super powers of world football that have found themselves inexplicably at the bottom of the premier league, they’re there because they’re crapper than the rest, actually crapper than we were at this point last season. Are there three teams you would rather come down instead who would make it any less difficult?

Based on current points I’d certainly rather it was those three relegated than City, Utd and Liverpool, then we’d really struggle.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Friday night victories are the best! Especially when two of your nearest promotion rivals have lost!!

And Luton 3-0 down to top it all off. What a wonderful weekend!

We shouldn't, no. But it's hard to say he's not very good at defending corners.

JP did head at least two straight away in that bombardment period at the end of the game, in fairness.

Yeah noticed that, underrated part of JP's game is his aerial battles. If he adds headed goals to his game he's fully the next R9

I agree with you. You can never tell how they will get on if relegated.
I think this season is our best chance, if it is true about our dwindling finances.

3 wins out of 3 after changing formation and forward personel whilst catapulting us into the automatic
shake up is fantastic especially after the 3 previous turgid games.
My only slight concern is how we lost a bit of control after Hughes was taken off who IMO should be in the England squad .

There was a 1-2 minute spell where Kiko, Sarr, Zinc and I think Cleverly were playing little passes around their bewildered defenders in a 3m square area and it was a thing of beauty. Sarr eventually used it to break free and then Zinc took the ball across the face of the box and had a left foot shot on target.

Unfortunately this did give them the ball and we had to face that horrible set of corners at the death.

    Swings and roundabouts eh.

I think Munos needs to look a bit closer to the teams we play when making certain team selections and subs.
Troost is a very good defender on the ground and has pace, but he's weak in the air. He works well covering Kiko so I would be happy with him playing say Bournemouth, but not teams like Derby that lob in lots of high balls plus load up on corners.
That's the way I see it....

It’s weird. He does this thing when the ball is in the air, and he moves his feet to position himself in anticipation of where the ball will be, then seems to propel himself into the air and beats the defender to the ball.

I’m not sure exactly what it’s called, but I wish Troy or Gray would learn it too.

We should. It's called using the tools at your disposal. If Deeney had been on the bench he comes on 100% of the time if we're defending a lead. He is very very good at defending set pieces, often hear commentary teams mention how its been cleared yet again by Troy Deeney defending, perhaps suprised the big lump isnt left up for the fast counter....
And he is our best bet at having defenders bounce off him in the cormer flag in the last minute.

So he is our finisher to close out a game.
He is our finisher from the spot.
Just not a finisher from open play.

Agreed, this impact sub role is what he should have been playing for a long time now. When he comes on with twenty minutes to go and can just go 100% full pelt, he can change a game with his physicality still. In terms of defence or even attack. Hopefully this is what we see for the rest of the season

If Deeney is so good at defensive headers why can’t he get on the end of any at the end he’s paid to do it?

He could when he was younger and fitter.

Probably a bit like with the defending too.

  21. carboy98

Because to defend a corner he doesn't have to move very much. To get on the end of a cross after an attacking move he has to run into position. And as we know, he can't run.

Well I like how Troy was first made into a number 10, now he’s being made into one of our best defenders. We’ve won 3/3 without him, scoring 9 and conceding 1. Given the choice I’d bring I don’t know, someone like Sierralta on to help defend corners, an actual defender, or appreciate that taking our best midfielders off brought undue pressure on the defence, it wasn’t the lack of Troy Deeney being present.

Troy is completely past it and shouldn’t be near the pitch if at all possible for reasons not just related to his lack of ability. We don’t need to keep repurposing him in to different roles that we already have players for. If he refuses to go gracefully, then we as fans don’t need to do the same.

  24. WatfordTalk

Because he's still huffing and puffing away at the half way line by the time we cross the ball. And he's pretty poor at directing his headers, but he's not bad at getting distance on them.

Are you so blinded by your hatred of Deeney that you can't admit he's very effective at defending corners? No one is suggesting he should be starting every week, only that in a game where we're threatened by several whipped in set pieces, he could have been useful in defending them.

By the way, Derby had 10 corners against us, Preston and Bristol City had 6, combined.

  25. a19tgg

    a19tgg First Team

It’s ironic to suggest I’m the one blinded, when week in week out you’re the one desperately trying to repurpose him into ever more absurd new roles.

Give it up, he’s shot and clearly shouldn’t be near the team ever again.

Oh, sorry, I thought we were just making stuff up about each other? Seeing as all I've said about Deeney is that he played well for about 3 games and is decent at defending corners, but he shouldn't be starting.

I don't understand why it's so difficult for some people to be objective? I don't rate Deeney anymore, and if an offer of £0 came in January, I would have taken it. But I'm still able to give credit where due. I don't rate Chalobah, but can still appreciate he was very good against Derby.

You've seen the name Deeney alongside anything vaguely positive, and gone in full defensive mode.

  29. a19tgg

    a19tgg First Team

Well you’re giving him credit for something he didn’t actually do, because he wasn’t available to do it. Troy may or may not be good at defending, I don’t personally want him involved in any capacity, least of all ones that aren’t even his natural position.

There was a better solution to the second half at Derby which was to not make subs that created the situation in the first place.

Creating a situation that puts us under pressure then suggesting Deeney would’ve helped alleviate it even though he wasn’t even an option just seems like quite and odd view/take to me.

Credit? What on earth are you talking about? It was just an off the cuff remark that much like Sierralta, Deeney would have helped defend Derby's dangerous corners. I really don't get why you're so upset by it!

Do you disagree that Deeney is effective at defending corners?

Isn't Deeney good at defensive headers from corners because he's given the free role at the near post? That's where most corners are headed away by whoever is stationed there (think 90% of our corners over the last few years).
