Troy’s Achilles Heel

The irony can’t be overstated here

Firstly Troy has a problem with his Achilles heel, Troy, nominative determinism for you right there.

Secondly he is our Achilles heel this season

there are better scholars of Ancient Greek here than I, but I do believe Troy shares some character traits with Achilles - pompous, hot headed, views himself as a demigod etc

Achilles’ tendon injuries take ages to heal by the way and are notoriously temperamental and unpredictable

If it ends with the first team riding out to the pitch inside a big wooden horse to beat Luton, I'm so many levels of down.

I see this as a blessing. He should of gone before this season. Head held high after a great career for Watford. He's long past his best and we won't move on until he's gone.

Hopefully our medical team can work their usual miracles and turn a minor injury into a 6 month lay off.

It seems Xisco was told by the board to make 442 work with Troy and Andre/JP rotating. I doubt there's a single Spaniard in the world who would look at our squad with players like Sarr Sema and JP and think 442. It's inconceivable to me that Xisco wanted to play 442. It was Deeneyball. Obviously after the Cov game there was a meltdown made worse by the club's insane decision to publicly belittle the legacy of Luther Blissett. It felt a bit like Gino's empire was crumbling before his eyes. Many of the more talented players would've been objecting to playing caveman football and it was obvious with the divided dressing room, outmoded playing style and neither Troy nor Andre scoring from open play that we had no chance of promotion even if we got into the play offs. I assume Xisco gave Gino and Scott similar feedback on Troy to what Ivic did in terms of his impact on and off the pitch. It was so bleedin obvious by the end of it. On top of that the Hive live viewing figures must have been getting pretty embarrassing and the feedback from fans was that the style of play was sh1t and they didnt wanna watch our 2 overpaid Z list celebrity thugs lumbering around achieving nothing. I don't know who instigated the new formation, whether it was the more talented players in the squad, Xisco or the technical team. But a paradigm shift seems to have occurred. Its almost impossible to get promoted unless the dressing room, manager, board and fans are all united. It seems like by some miracle this has now largely happened and even Troy may now be on board with the new regime. The odds are against us for promotion but it can be done. We have between 16 and 19 games left this season to fight like dogs over every blade of grass. We have the system and the players. maybe just maybe we can do this!!

One of the Coventry City defenders, Ostigard I believe, has saved our season by injuring Troy.

I will be eternally grateful to Coventry City if we get promoted now.

A 'supporter' of our club praising an injury (and injurer) to one of our players? Or maybe I'm missing something?

And I'm in no way a fan of Troy's recent on-field performances.

He said he'd be grateful to them, and let's not forget that the injury came from the player falling on him - hardly a violent studs-up assault. But more to the point, Deeney being out has literally coincided directly with the entire way the team plays changing, as well as a total 180 in terms of attitude and commitment from the players as a unit.

If the choice is Deeney not being fallen on, staying fit, and everything staying the same, or the heroic Cov defender doing his job and we get promoted playing as an actual football team that reflects the level of player we possess, then it's not a choice at all.

Personally, I don't see how humourously recognising that is 'offensive' - there are enough things to actually be offended about in the world right now as it is.

Calm down will you. It's a few weeks he's out injured for, it's not like he's unable to walk again.

The club has been scandalously over-reliant on Deeney for the past few seasons, he should have been moved on a long time ago. If it takes a minor injury for this team to build a future without our shot captain, I will gleefully take it. What Deeney needs to do for both parties is move on and enjoy the last few years of his career elsewhere.

Hardly offensive. It’s an Achilles injury, so he’ll live, it’s not life threatening.

He’ll still be picking up his £70k per week, so his family won’t starve. Best of all we as Watford fans can actually start to enjoy the season and you never know, we might even get promoted because of it.

Not exactly sure who loses out in this scenario?

I am not standing up for troy but although he is a shadow of the player he was a couple of years ago he is still the best option if JP is not available for any reason.
I have already stated that i belive that the increase in tempo in the last 2 games is probably down to hughes playing more central driving the midfield forward,it was only 2 weeks ago that deeney was being praised for dropping back to the number 10 role to receive the ball thus eliminating the big hoof.
I have noticed that after the "normal"
1-0 win ,That the heat spot graphs have not been posted showing our perfect midfield and dynamic forwards unlike post a very poor bristol city.
Irrelevant of the forward line we are still lacking a creative midfielder.

I really don't think he is, not in this formation anyway. It's been proven time and time again that Deeney can't play as a lone-striker. If Joao Pedro gets injured, I'd hope we maintain a commitment to this current style of play and put either Perica, Sarr or a fit-again Success up front before we call on either Deeney or Gray to fill the role.

  24. a19tgg

That’s only because that’s literally all he can do. He can’t score goals anymore and he’s painfully slow, so the only thing he can do short of just becoming a centre back is that. It’s not something we need in the side in the slightest, it’s not even a proper role, it’s just a woefully past his prime player adapting to a position that makes him least ****. Why would someone like Zink (just one name) not just be a better option, someone who can actually run, shoot etc? Or just any player who can actually contribute more than standing still and laying the ball off?

Deeney is quite simply past it, it’s a simple as that.

So you are saying that we must always play a 433 formation because we won the last games against poor opponents, i don't think any of the players you quoted could
Play up front on their own .
It wont be long before people start stating that we have only one plan .

I think we should have always been playing the shape that suits the players we have best - that is 433 or 4231. It goes beyond just the last 2 games.

Could it not be the same Zinckernagel than ran at pace with the ball in that same game? Or the one who took part in a devastating counter-attack for the 6th goal against Bristol City?

Deeney could do neither of those things. Yet, playing in his position, it's quite simply his job to do be able to. You see the issue?

The 'heat spot graphs' were posted to counter your ludicrous suggestion that the difference at Bristol City was because Hughes was played in a central attacking midfield role, and that's something else you've 'already stated', so there we are, really.

You have never said "was that the same deeney that knocked the ball and then sprinted pass the defender in the 90th minute to protect our lead "
You seem to only highlight the good points of certain players whilst other players are just slated.
Every game is dependant on all 22 players on the field plus the officials.
Its so easy to just pick out any errors from any player in isolation.
also was PZ offside? For his tap in.

  31. Burnsy

Then you don’t read my posts. I have constantly said Deeney has a role to play as a sub who gets 20-30mins on occasion. Be that as someone who comes on to protect a lead or someone who we can go long to when we are chasing a game in the last 10 mins.

But he’s too prohibitive as a player to get more minutes than that. His footballing brain is as good as anyone’s in the side beyond perhaps Sarr. But his body is no longer is in keeping with that footballing know-how. He simply doesn’t fit in to the way we should now be looking to play at a side in my opinion.

In his own words he has said he wants us to play long - and with our own eyes we have seen over a number of years that he’s not capable of playing as a lone striker.

None of the above disrespects what he’s done for the club and he will rightfully have a very positive legacy for most fans. But what you do in the present and the future shouldn’t be dictated by the past.

  32. a19tgg

    a19tgg First Team

The record books say he wasn’t offside, so no. You know full well Troy wouldn’t have been in that position to tap the ball in, he would’ve been 20 yards behind Gray and Sarr, he slows play down and can’t keep up with the rest of our attackers, It’s why he hasn’t scored a header for years. It’s also the same reason why Cleverley got his goal against Huddersfield by chasing their keeper down, where was Troy, our forward? isn’t that his job? Burnsy’s description of how Troy should be used is spot on, he’s a forward who doesn’t score, can’t run and doesn’t make runs. Justifying him as a starter is borderline insanity.

I don’t think you ever want to lose s player to injury in a promotion push, because it’s a case of all hands on deck with the games coming think and fast.

However, and it’s not to belittle Troy’s huge service to our club but we all know we’ve looked so much better without him these past two matches.

The suspicion will always remain that when he’s fit, pressure from unknown quarters will always be put on Xisco to include him in the team.

That pressure has now gone away for a few weeks. I’m looking forward to watching our next few matches as we do seem to have turned a mini-corner.

I still wish we’d signed a replacement for Murray though, because while right now we do seem to have good options in attack, it only takes another injury or two like this one and we could look a bit short.

Medical!? The only thing I could prescribe is potentially a few heavy books of social theory for Deeney to rest his ankle on but I think there's still a chance for the Trojan horse.
