That is true HB a right wing half for most of his career a great tandem with Tom Finney at North End. But by the time his career was in it's closing stages as at Arsenal/Chelsea he was deployed as a full back this having been popularized by the Brazilians with their two great full backs Djalma and Nilton Santos (right/;eft and not related) in the previous two World Cups.
Fantastic, elegant player. I just about remember him but graceful and like any great player of any sport had time on the ball. RIP Nijinsky.

Saw Colin Bell in the 1970 League Cup Final and as a teenager, despite being a Watford fan, used to go and watch City when they played in London (only when Watford were away). What a player he was, one of my all time favorites along with another who sadly passed away recently, Martin Peters. RIP.
Tony Gregory 1938-2021. Looking rather unperturbed as Watford take on promotion rivals Millwall at The Den in 1960: Tony joined us from Luton Town for the sum of £6000 having played for the works side Vauxhall Motors as an England youth international before joining Luton as an outside left. He played in this position in the 1959 FA Cup Final where then top flight Luton lost to nine men Nottingham Forest 2-1. The sides featured Billy Bingham later Northern Ireland manager and Stewart Imlach of Forest the father of Gary who should be well known to American sport aficionados. For whatever reason Gregory was sold by Luton having completed his National Service and joined us in the bottom division. After a tremendous late run overseen by Ron Burgess we sneaked into fourth place and the last promotion spot pipping Millwall. Gregory was vital in supplying two of the forward line legendary Cliff Holton and Dennis Uphill with cross after cross. This was also the season when our nickname changed to the Hornets thanks to a fan competition. He played until the 1964 season before moving into non league football and eventually becoming a company MD. Not completely unsurprising as he was a Grammar old boy like our own GT. Condolences to his wife, family and friends.
Luton Shelton 1985-2021. Former Jamaica striker who found success in Sweden before an unsuccessful stint with Sheffield United. Scored the goal that saw Jamaica beat the US for the first time in qualification for the 2014 World Cup. Yet another victim of ALS. Familial victims of ALS are being studied for genetic mutations particularly in androgen receptors (androgens being the male hormones that bring about the primary sexual characteristics) and some success has been reported using androgen therapy in limiting the debilitating effects in fALS and some other neurodegenerative conditions. A lovely down to earth chap who will be missed by all who knew him. Back at Harbour View the club where he started his career before moving to Sweden.
Leopoldo Luque, charismatic forward for Argentina in the '78 World Cup has died aged 71. He had a heart condition I think, possibly lungs too and had contracted Covid in December. '78 was the first WC I recall vividly as a 14 year old. The ticker tape,Kempes,Luque and Ardiles. RIP LL.

Glenn Roeder. Former player and boss has died from a brain tumour aged 65. Assured and composed defender. RIP Glenn.
Just seen that. Sad news. Only remember him as a manager - did well for 2 season until a bad 3rd meant GT came in.
Sad news about Glenn Roeder. Was manager near the beginning of me supporting Watford and I remember that time well. He led us to about 7th I think one season which was no mean feat then. RIP.
RIP Glenn, so sad. He was a great player, a good manager and a really nice bloke. Condolences to family and friends.
What an utterly dismal weekend, weather apart. And I thought Ford having three teeth out on Thursday was bad.
Ian St John has died aged 82. I am a bit young to have seen him play, but I do remember his ITV programme with Jimmy Greaves.
Ian St.John 1938-2021. Helped Liverpool regain entry to the top flight under Shankly and was more prolific in the second their than the first but undoubtedly a vital figure in their history scoring the goal that secured their first ever FA Cup. Comes from the time when you could whistle up a player from Scotland with ease and they would appear. A fine raconteur and lovely man off the pitch he was part of the side beaten by Watford in the FA Cup QF in 1970 that saw Shankly remove him gradually from first team duties. More likely to be remembered by younger fans for his show with the legend Jimmy Greaves for the show Saint and Greavsie discussing the footballing topics of the week at lunchtime just before you popped off your home match. The theme tune is that used for ITV's coverage of the 86 World Cup Aztec Gold.
Great player and always came across as a thoroughly decent bloke as a pundit. I think Liverpool losing to us in the 1970 FA Cup Quarter Final was a turning point for his Liverpool career, as Shanks got rid of him soon after, but he had been a great servant to the club. And the Saint and Greavsie show was just good entertainment.
I never saw him play other than vague memories of tv highlights and re runs. I loved Saint and Greavsie, they complemented each other very well, like all good double acts.
It wasn’t just the Saint who was finished at Liverpool after that Watford defeat. Most of that team was replaced as Shankley rebuilt the squad that was to win the League in ‘73 and the Cup in ‘74 with Keegan and co.

Not football but RIP Murray Walker. The man,as Clive James so memorably wrote "commentated as if his trousers were on fire". Responsible for "A Mars a day" slogan too.
