Gray would laugh if someone only offered him a million a year :(

Can you believe that man 'earns' over £3m a year. It's laughable and sickening in equal measure. There's very few professions where you can be so bad at your job and get paid such astronomical amounts.

11 days to go until the window slams shut!

If we don’t go up, I hope the last resistance of the COG’s will finally hold their hands up and admit they were wrong.

Gino has 11 days to insure promotion. It’s on him, and him alone if we don’t achieve it.

Random keeper on loan for a month. That's as good as it's going to get.

Ensure (unless he's up to even more dodgy financial dealings).

My gut feeling is that GP is playing safe. We won't be signing anybody unless they are young and cheap, or loanees.
He thinks the squad should be good enough for top 4 and is happy for a decent coach to have go at it this season.
Looking at the names we are supposedly looking at plus recent acquisitions I am fairly happy we'll be somewhere in the top 4, and if we don't go up I am really excited with the prospect of this current bunch (+ a striker and DelegB back) being a very strong squad next season....
I'm guessing spending this season but not going up would mean financial problems so the sensible aim is promotion this or next season...?

There will be financial issues in the summer whether we spend now or not. The only way to avoid it is by getting promoted - so its arguable that the safe option is spending now to strengthen the chance of getting Top 2.

We won't be able to sustain the wage bill as it is next season and more cuts/sales will undoubtedly be needed. Sarr, Joao Pedro, Hughes would all likely be gone...

Agree. If Gino fails us again, then he will send us back to the dark ages of mid table in the championship for decades. With the occasional play-off push or surviving relegation to league 1.

It’s now or never. If they have truly learnt from their mistakes then they risk it all now. Knowing that failure in promotion will see them have to dismantle this entire team.

This appears to be the issue with our ownership. They always want to fly just above the rooftops, clipping chimneys along the way, rather than high into the clouds.

It was clear we had a very decent team, but the big area of concern was up front. We sorted out the defence (which should have been done the season before) but now have one of the best sides in the Championship with one of the worst central strike forces. (5 away goals is the worst in the entire Championship). Our central strikers have scored just 2 goals in open play all season.

Had we signed Ivan Toney, it would be a two horse race between us and Norwich as to who would be champions. For that relatively small outlay of £5m, we'd have certainly all but guaranteed promotion. Now we're clipping chimneys and running the gauntlet of the play offs.

Going down last season is on Gino. Failing to get promoted this season will be also on Gino, because it would be a massive underachievement based on the squads we had in both seasons. Just minor improvements have been needed in the past two seasons, but this has not been acted upon. This was always going to be our best chance of promotion, maybe our only chance and already opportunities have been missed (signing Toney). Fail to do anything significant in this window, then it's a wing and a prayer whether we get promotion.

No point in selling young players who aren’t on that much if you are going to have high earners still at the club as not sure how much you would save .

The Toney situation grates everyone. But we couldn't shift either one of our free scoring strikers. Had one or preferably both gone I have no doubt he would of joined.

I don’t disagree with most of your post but I don’t think it is right to exclude Joao Pedro from the goals scored by our central strikers stat. He’s scored 6 (which I think includes 1 penalty) and all playing as a centre forward. For some reason he has been designated by some of our fans as a winger despite playing the vast majority of his minutes both for us and for Fluminese through the middle, but I think we should recognise that while he doesn’t have the typical physical and technical profile of a championship centre forward, that is where he’s playing.

Leventhal has claimed in his post-game Q&A that we are in for a striker and he will be releasing a piece tomorrow about it...

No idea. He was talking about Deeney/WBA at the time and was a bit ambiguous whether he was talking about us or WBA being in for a striker - but I can’t see why he’d be writing a piece regarding WBA.

    Yes I
I heard that too, he mentioned he’ll do a piece on it tomorrow, then said something about writing a piece in Monday later on, so I’m not sure it’s about that or something else.

He seemed quite matter of fact so I doubt it’s an exclusive. I expect it’s fleshing out the Simmonds approach.

Sounded to me like Leventhal was saying WBA are in the market for a striker, rather than Watford

Yeah I wasn’t sure - but why would Leventhal be doing a piece on that?

Didn’t say he was doing a piece, said he’d point people to a piece on it

According to some arsenal “ITK” on the twittersphere we are interested in taking Reiss Nelson on loan. He claims Reading and one other championship club also interested. Says a Prem team interested as well.

Didn’t give this its own thread because, well it’s an account on Twitter. Can’t see it being true unless Sarr is off.

He was talking about us as he’s just highlighted the piece - we have interest in Vydra on loan.

I’m clinging on to the fact that Leventhal is just pointing to something someone else has said. Hopefully the Burnley journo has more insider knowledge of his club that AL does with us.

If, and it’s a big if because I don’t think he will, but, if Gino brings in Siliki, Asamoah and Vydra then he would have done his part in helping us try to reach the Prem. At that point it will all be down to the players and Xisco.

I don’t think we will sign anyone, however, so failure to get promoted will fully be on Gino and I expect every watford fan to want him out.

WBA in for Christian Benteke and have also enquired about Andy Carroll...so the idea of Gray or Deeney heading there is getting smaller yet again.

Much like a January signing or two could've kept us last year (when all we got was Pussetto), same applies here. We won't go up with the current squad but we're not far off being able to force our way into top two. But we'll be cautious again, miss out on promotion, have to sell all our good players and be left wondering how we so quickly became another mid table Championship team.

We are signing nobody except Zinks who the unqualifed coach won’t play.
