How on earth can you conflate £500k Steve Kabba who didn’t tarnish the clubs reputation in any way, as being a worse signing than Gray when you take EVERYTHING into consideration? Another ridiculous comment. If the point being made was ‘Gray is the worst striker we have had in terms of ability’ then I’d get your argument that’s there’s been worse. But that’s not the point that was made.
Success at least was on loan for large periods of time, so inevitably there would be a form of wage reduction by the way of loan fees and/or wage contributions. Still one of the worse signings we have made but not the same conversation by a long stretch. Same can be said of Oulare.
Enough names banded about to conclude that Gray isn't our worse ever signing. The haters club can continue to claim it is, but it simply isn't correct.
Not really. For example I have seen mixed views about Deeney's performance yesterday, some say he was bad and others said he did ok. I didn't see how he did so can't say either way. Same with Gray. I know how some players are talked about on this forum so it isn't right for me to necessarily take the views as gospel.
I believe he just means those who watch the games, and then form an opinion based on what they observed. As opposed to staunchly supporting a predetermined opinion of Gray, and seeking to excuse his lack of effort despite not watching the game.
Gray got us into an FA Cup Semi-Final, didn't he? Just for that, he's not our worst ever player. Maybe P4P worst ever signing but then again if it was £9 million with performance-related add-ons that he obviously has not hit then I don't think it's worst financially either.
I don't hate AG . I just think that he has lost his desire to work hard because of his big bucks, top dollar contract. The club\team is no suffering as his wages could be put to better use . FTR i was at Muff last year and when we scored our 3rd after his shot was cleared he was happy that we had scored . So I don't buy the "he is deliberately useless" line . He is no longer good enough due to lack of hunger .
No one is claiming worst ever . Plenty of those back in the Div4 days . But those players didn't break the bank . As for scoring a goal in a football match . That's his job. Delefeou got us into a final . With pure brilliance after the forwards , no names no pack drill, had shanked a couple of good chances. Admittedly AG was involved in the winner . Great pass for GD it has to be said .
Not my money though, he's responsible for two moments of Watford joy for me so he's above Isaac £12 million Success.
This is a good point . Success unlike Gray has natural ability and has chosen not to use it and at great cost to the club . However I have repeatedly said that until we get the high earning low scoring "strikers" off the wage bill we are just going to tread water
I did as well and I stand by it. The worst ever signing and possibly the worst decision Gino Pozzo has ever made. Apart from bringing back Quique.
Aidy Boothroyd signed him to solve the goalscoring problem following Marlon King's injury. He signed Steve Kabba, who failed to score in the Premier League for us and we finished bottom. Kabba played 14 Championship games the following season, scoring once. And he had no 'Deeney-like influence' to worry about.
Kabba along with Rinaldi etc were desperation signings . Gray was a "next level" signing . You cannot make a comparison , surely ?
He is. When you consider all aspects of what we got in return for our money, he truly is. You are throwing names like Steve Kabba around who is just a player with lesser ability when we were a lesser club. I would place Success close to him - but Success hasn’t broken lockdown twice, isn’t on 70k and there’s real question marks about just how much he really cost us as a club. Ramon Vega nearly financially ruined us as a club so he is up there but again, no off-field issues. Gray and Ellington are comparable in that they cost a lot of money for our standing as a club at the time so have been huge disappointments. But you are saying names like Steve bloody Kabba who was just a poor player who didn’t do well. That’s it. No outside issues, not throwing shade on the clubs name etc. If the question was ‘Who showed less ability as a striker for us than Gray?’ then you’d have a point. A few of the names mentioned would be worse. But that WAS NOT the argument that was put across. Do you not realise how stupid it sounds when you defend a players performances having not watched the games? Or that you refuse to answer a simple question about his best traits as a player? Clueless.
Was some cracking fights back then. I caught up and watched the fights of the 'big 4' when they fought each other not so long ago on YouTube.
Whilst it ended in tragedy , Nigel Benn getting punched out of the ring in the 1st round against Gerald McClelland and getting back into the ring and eventually winning takes some topping
Did Kabba show less ability than Gray? Success has appeared in the news for off-field issues as well tbf, and Gray did at least play a part in the Cup run, so I'd have Success shading it with Gray just behind
Ellington was bad for us, but in fairness, maybe he's got a point when he said that we just weren't playing to his strengths...Gray and Success, well, with their lack of ability and/or application, we could have built the team around them and not get much in return!
