Hmmm, not angry, but an ‘outrageous piece of fear mongering’, ‘blatantly misleading’, the ‘BBC are a disgrace’ you said. And it’s not even the BBC’s figures. They are the Government’s.

The internet isn’t good for conveying mood. Some people assume I’m deadly serious all the time. I’m certainly not. Look, a smiley face. :)

Well worth the younger generation sacrificing everything for over year in the face of something that presents a miniscule threat to them, if it enables the older folk vaccinated first to live get their holidays booked first too.

Over 50 isn't old. And plenty of us didn't vote for Brexit.

    Next inaccurate sweeping generalisation?

I thought all these “youngsters” were going to be skint and out of work anyway so they wouldn’t afford to away?

    ;)

Or so keen to get back into education..

I presume some people don’t have elderly (not that 50 is any way elderly !) relatives or friends which is why they seems so bitter and uncaring about them being protected ?

At least their sob stories will keep the consumer affairs shows going when Boris announces Lockdown 6.0 at the start of the summer and all foreign travel is banned

Well it doesn’t help all the travel companies have been advertising these holidays as if everything will be normal .

The point I was ineloquently making was that more over 50s voted to leave than under 50s.

I get that but it’s still a generalisation. You might just as well say that English people voted for Brexit. When, of course, millions of them did not.

Of course it's a generalisation - can people not generalise?

You don’t think generalisations are misleading and potentially dangerous? They can justify treating a heterogeneous group in a homogeneous way.

(I do appreciate the original post was tongue in cheek).

    It is true, though.

In almost every published metric I've seen for multiple countries, post-weekend numbers have always been calculated including the weekend deaths because deaths aren't reported out accurately over the weekend. Since every week is reported in the same way (i.e. including weekend deaths on a Monday due to weekend reporting limitations) it's more than fair to make comparisons versus prior weeks.

The UK gov website has always shown the 7 day rolling average which irons out reporting delays a little, it doesn't quite do bank holidays well but it's a good enough measure.

Still not sure what choice you think there was. What could they have done during a rampaging second wave? Go to a gig or theatre? No one would be travelling or playing anyway and all international travel corridors would have been shut to pariah UK.

The vaccine is the good news, is going well and will free us all old and young. Then we can think how to play it the next time so the burden doesn’t fall so unevenly.

I simply think at this point the older generation need to do more to acknowledge and recognise the massive sacrifices younger people have made. There's already a massive generational divide of haves and have nots in this county - home ownership, final salary pensions, affordability of higher education are all obvious markers of it - and so we should avoid Covid becoming another one where our elders say "we're alright jack" and leave another fine mess for the rest of us to sort out.

'How?' is the obvious question in response to my first sentence. I'd say a good start would not be engaging in a massive tone deaf self-delusion that by early summer they'll all be free to gallivant off where they want with their newly minted vaccine passports, presumably while we all remain in home confinement while they sagely tell us it's for the greater good.

The problem isn’t age, it’s class. Well off young people will ride this out fine as will their parents. Poor older people will have been struggling with isolation and the stress of putting coins in the meter to simply heat their homes. Alternatively they are the ones most likely to live in inter generational households with poor health and succumb, before their time.

But why not have some optimism about what the vaccine will deliver? If the majority of the Country is vaccinated by summer, esp those most vulnerable, then restrictions should ease. So far vaccination is going well.

And those well off young people can gallivant off as they have always been able to do and those less well off will be free to make the best of it.

Older people could be more grateful, for sure. Many are.

Well, if that happens it’s a whole new shooting match.

Unless the new strains are less deadly, it will be carry on as you were with all the difficulties that entails.

My parents get their vaccines today, they're both in their mid-70s. They are thrilled.

    Who’s doing that, exactly?

You’ve cited one BBC article which suggests that holiday bookings from older people have increased. Because they think life will be getting back to normal and they have been cooped up for over a year. Why shouldn’t they do that? You’re making it sound as if older people are sticking two fingers up at the younger and telling them to get on with it. I see no evidence of that at all. I suspect that younger people are busily booking holidays too, but that’s just not newsworthy.

We’ve all made huge sacrifices over the past year. It’s not just younger people. Though clearly there is truth in what you say in the first paragraph.

That's good as you'll then be able to just log into microsoft "where are my parents" and just track their movements constantly which will put your mind at rest.
