  1. Just a little poll. If you have had it, a description of your symptoms might be interesting.

    Not had it.

My symptoms are frustration, boredom and concern for the future.

    Possibly.
Had a very sore throat back in Feb 2020 which lasted more than a week or two. Bit wheezy and also a spell when I was exhausted but this co-coincided with moving a lot of furniture about. I've not really been 100% since to be honest but improving. Strange for me as I've only had 1 day of sick in the last 10 years.
I've been bloody careful, pretty much shielding as I'm the only support for my elderly folks, one with Parkinsons.

So In all likelyhood looking back I probably had it.

Me and the Mrs had something similar to flu last February which was very unpleasant for about 3/4 days, we then began to feel better except for a niggly cough that lasted for a further week or two.

The symptoms seemed similar to flu, but neither of us thought that that is what we had, we just thought it was just some sort of bug that we had picked up. You have to remember that back in February Covid had not really been prevalent in the public eye, so at the time we did not even consider that that might have been what it was.

However, we do now wonder if our mystery illness might well have been Covid?

Yes. Ticked "tested positive" as no tests available for public back then but my wife tested positive at work and we had same symptoms at same time for 3 weeks in March/April.
Mildly ill (sore thoat, cough, temperature) for 3 days before 10 days or so of fever, total lethargy, no apetite, worst headaches I've ever had, lost taste and smell, breathing worsened, living on painkillers every 4 hours. Then about a week of slow recovery day by day.

Hope you're both feeling back to normal now? Any symptoms that lingered for little longer, or any long-term things you noticed? Tired more easily etc?

Reason I ask is got identified as a close contact before Xmas and now haven't had a sense of smell for over 3 weeks. Had a test a week after symptoms that returned as inconclusive. Another test a week later came back negative.

Don’t think so, but I’ve just done a test (as part of a study) so I’ll let you know in due course.

Both 100% back to normal. Taste and smell took a few weeks. It wasn’t pleasant but the worst but was the worry. When we were still feeling awful after 10 days, with lots of websites showing how the virus destroys your organs, it does start to play with your mind.

Had it just before Christmas confirmed by positive test (was probably the new variant as I'm a virus hipster). Complete loss of taste and smell for 3-4 days, hard to get out of bed and very tired by end of day. Felt recovered then went for a run after a few days and legs were like jelly and was breathing hard after about 200m. Hard to know if any longer term effects as it pretty much took up the whole of my Xmas break so not sure if just generally a bit fatigued.

Taste and smell seems to have recovered, but both wine and beer have tasted a bit off since I've had it! Haven't noticed anything else tasting different.

I think I’ve had it but obviously, not 100%.

Remember feeling really fatigued (this would’ve been the very start of last year) to the point that keeping my eyes open and head up at my desk at work was an effort, and walking home from the station completely sapped all of my energy away. Very achey joints and feeling exhausted. It only lasted 3-4 days but was nothing like any bugs I’d had before.

I’ve had two tests since COVID came into the public eye. One when I had a loss of taste for a day or two (negative), and a second this week - we have a community test site in town due to the higher numbers here, and as I’m going into the office a couple of days a week I think I’ll get regularly tested to be on the safe side. Negative again, with a turnaround time of approximately 25 minutes for a result.

All four members of our family have had 7 tests each, as part of the ONS Covid Survey. All negative. Tests were initially weekly and are now monthly.

My wife has had quite a number of tests due to her work, all negative.
My teenage son lost his sense of taste in mid November but tested negative, the sense returned 3 days later. My wife had one of her tests that week.
I did an antibody test in September and that indicated that I'd not had it before.

Not personally but my sister did in November.

My wife and I had it rough, but not bad enough to be hospitalised. We’re both over 50. My dad, who’s approaching 80, also had it.
Temperature for 4 days, sleepless nights for 10 nights, VERY dry mouth (no one seems to have mentioned that one?). I only lost taste and smell for 4 days, but it hasn’t come back fully, I don’t think. Very tired for a couple of weeks after.
Would recommend paracetamol every 4 hours, Night Nurse before bed (amazing discovery!) and plenty to drink, which was hard. Get out of bed if you can and make sure you eat something.

A ‘no’ as expected. I’d throw in a gag, but there was enough of that doing the test.

Suspect I had it in March. I had a dry cough and called work to say I was WFH, as it seemed like another swine flu/sars/bird flu scare. I was told I had to isolate for 14 days.

I was shocked it was just a little cough. I'd only brought it up because I was conscious about being seen coughing in public at a time of heightened awareness.

Then about 2 days later I went down hard. 2 days in bed, flu like symptoms. Slept for probably 30 of the 48 hours.

I recovered quite fast, but the first time I went for a run (I'd done a half marathon on feb 28th) I was wheezing after 3k.

Took me a while to get back but I feel I'm at full capacity now.

So not tested but seems likely it was COVID.

Must have had it as the wife and son tested positive recently. Not a single symptom by any of us.

Best case scenario imo - get it asymptomatically, cross it off the list and walk around with those nice antibodies for a few months at least.

What is the latest advice about people who have recently suffered from Covid and been hospitalized by it, do they remain contagious or not?

I am asking this question for a very good reason as we have a snagging issue with some building work we had done by a local firm and they have proposed sending a man who has only recently returned to work who fits the above scenario exactly.

We appreciate we can keep well away from him while he is here, but we are worried he could introduce Covid into our house unwittingly. We know he can sanitise before he leaves, but we are concerned that he may accidentally miss somewhere he has been in contact with, and we do not want to run that risk.

I’m not sure his hospitalisation is an issue any more than having it mildly (other than a big issue for him). Some advice suggests that a severe case may require 20 days isolation after symptoms, but hospitalised patients may be in much longer than their symptoms last because of their need to recover function and fitness. But in general once it’s over it’s considered over and people can go about their business.

In that respect any tradesperson coming to your home could have had it a fortnight ago, got better, returned to work and would be under no obligation to tell you.

So the main thing is that you have to keep social distancing whatever. I would be very cautious and work out exactly where they will be working and how you can be separate from that area, ventilate, sanitise and leave alone for a while, avoiding lapsing into the maddest paranoia. Sharing the same space and breathing the same air is the biggest problem.

You shouldn’t feel uncomfortable about raising this and being clear about what you require. You could also try to delay the snagging work if possible as things are going to be getting better week by week.

And be aware that once they are in the home your guard will drop. We had roof work done and were not too bothered as the guys were, well on the roof. And then they asked a question and we just started chatting inside without even thinking about it. It’s easily done and you may feel uncomfortable about it afterwards.

Actually it is a roof leak that is our problem, so delaying the work is not really on. however it will involve them coming into the house and going into our loft which is our main concern, if he was staying out side we would not be bothered, but he will almost certainly have to come into our home.

It is not actual contact with him that is bothering us, as we can keep our distance quite easily. It is that he might introduce Covid into our home by just being in here that is our concern.

Asking him to wear a mask and gloves (obviously both can be builder type ones rather than medical PPE I suppose) at any point when he’s inside seems reasonable to me. Not sure there’s much else you can do other than removing yourself from immediate contact. I’m not sure there’s any evidence someone who was hospitalised is a greater risk of spreading Covid than someone who had minor symptoms.

Ultimately it’s down to your personal risk assessment. We had a surveyor in the house last Friday who was on his day 11 after a Covid positive test (ie. his first day back at work). He’d had no symptoms though, wore a mask throughout and I kept my distance from him as much as possible.

Caught it at the Rotherham game in Dec along with my son , my mate and his son.

Wiped out for 10 days and lost smell and taste .

    I’d say it I’ve recovered my sense of smell/taste 75% now .

I’d be gutted if it didn’t come back fully as good food , wine and whiskey are things that give me great joy .

How do you know and what contact do you think caused it? We went to the Cardiff game and thought the distancing etc. was managed very well.
