What Would Have Happened If Pereyra Had Scored The One-on-one At 0-0 In The Cup Final?

What would have happened?

  1. We still lose but it's at least credible and dignified, something like a 1-3

  2. It's irrelevant, we simply lose 1-6 instead of 0-6

  3. We would have dug in, frustrated the 'Citizens' and recorded a historic 1-0 win or a draw

  4. We turns up the heat and end up thrashing City 6-0

If Sir Bobby Charleton and Alan Ball hadn’t have been substituted I’m sure we would have won the game and the upcoming Final!

Champions League Winners for sure. Best owner, CEO and scouting programme in the world. Clubs beating a path to the Vic in order to discover the magic formula. Deeney chief football correspondent of The Times. Gracia Watford Mayor for life, statues of Giraldi in Thornhill Plaza. Oh I could go on.....

We were already sliding well before that defeat. Many hoped, optimistically, that the slide was because the players were saving it all for a blockbuster showing at Wembley, at the biggest game in our club's history. Instead, they were just fed up with trying hard.

In many ways, the combination of fortune, brilliance and timing which saw our semi final turn around heralded the biggest false dawn I can remember.

We left Wembley thinking we were heading for 7th place, Europe and the outside chance of a trophy, whilst giving one of the big boys a bloody nose.

We were like kids, unwrapping a big looking Christmas present, with anticipation and excitement, only to unveil a steaming turd.

Which made it all the worse. We got our own hopes up, despite the stench.

The other Cup Final we got to:
Everton were a poor side that season, nearly knocked out in, I think, the third round by Oxford. It was the season we didn't have Blissett. We lost Rostron pre-match to a dreadful refereeing decision at, of all places , Luton. Gray fouled our keeper in scoring the first. Their second was mis-hit in off a post. We could, and should, have won that.

Except that we were poor on the day (first twenty minutes or so aside).

Everton won the league the following year, of course, so clearly weren’t that poor a side.

The problem (as Jimmy hill said at the time) was we had our small/little club mentality and were just happy to arrive in the final, we didn’t have the cutting edge on the day, together with having no luck!

Gray's goal was the second. Even if it had been disallowed, I doubt we'd have got back into the game.

One thing that does stand out from that, ahem, "goal" now though is how Steve Sherwood's arms-in-air complaint action has been perfected regularly by Troy Deeney.

    Everton second goal at 6:23.

Well, that was rather my point - we were poor on the day.
That was next season. The first half of the season Everton fans were calling for Howard Kendall to go. Andy Gray pulled them round and they finished seventh, five points ahead of us.

Andre wasn't born then, but to be fair it probably was still his fault somehow.

I was there that day in 1984 and despite the result it was a great day out.

In the first 15 mins we could have scored 3 goals, but after that Everton were probably the better team :( However I still say that Grays so called goal should never have stood, and I had actually forgotten that Mighty Mo had put the ball in the net only for it to be disallowed for offside.

I also remember that our fans gave about a 15 minute rendition of "Elton Johns Taylor Made Army" at the end of the match, far out singing the Everton fans who had just won the cup

I would be surprised if such a thought entered even your head during the euphoria that followed the semi final. Even before there were little if any signs of the collapse to come, our league form going into the semi was decent and the form between the Huddersfield and Everton home games was patchy but even the worst performances were better than many in the following season. And our often maligned defence was actually decent against non-top six opposition when we kept 11 men on the pitch.

The board still can't be absolved of blame because they should have known more than most that if you stand still you go backwards, more so if you finish a season the way we did 2018/19 and they should have spent some money in the summer of 2019 on two full backs and a striker.

The thing I remember while leaving Wembley that day was being very confident that we would be back in a season or two to have another crack at it. I never dreamt it would take 35 years.

Barnes header in the early exchanges of the 1984 cup final.... we would have gone on to win

Yes and the Taylor or Jacket shot that was deflected wide. Everton grew into it and once ahead barely gave us a shot.

At least we got that moment where we could dream. Most clubs our size never get that.

I think deep down we all know Watford will never amount to anything, but it's nice to dream every now and again.

Yeah, but don't you think it could and perhaps should have been different? We had it within our grasp but just turned our nosed up and went on a spectacular slide.

Me too. We were simply an unbelievable team to watch. Full of pride and passion. Bassett single handedly tore the soul out of our club. For the love of me still can't understand some of the decisions he made player wise. Kevin Richardson and Bardsley are two that still irks me.

I know he scored six goals in his first five games. I remember a "6-5 Special" headline!
Imagine a Watford striker scoring at that rate these days.

GT was starting to really add some talent to our already excellent team. Tbh I wouldn't mind a striker hitting the target that many times tbf.
