Sadly given our economy is likely stuffed(and therefore tax income) for many years to come, the NHS is utterly b*****d.

I'm 100% not anti-vax, 100% aware that covid 19 is a very nasty disease.....however the lack of debate about the effects of lockdown on 'controlling' covid 19 is shocking. equally so the lack of questioning on the stats we are being presented with.

The science on Vit D is well known. The UK is well north of the latitude where UV B restricts Vit D in the winter months. The science on obesity and lack of Vit D is well known. We live in an obese society. The science on natural Vit D production of people with darker skin being lower is well known. So why has the impact on the BAME population come as a surprise? The science on reduced Vit D production in the elderly is also well known. We live in an ageing society and it is mainly the elderly who have died.

Do I think mass Vit D supplements would have solved the problem? No, but I'm pretty sure it would have helped.

As far as I know, the government are not naming, shaming and blaming people like you are suggesting, they are basically appealing to a wider public for compliance and explaining why. What on earth is wrong with that? What is the point in 95% of the population complying if the rest are spreading the virus about - we'll be in lockdown much longer and more poeple will die.

I don't think that the government wanted the Derbyshire incident to be publicised, that was down to the women going to the media, and it being leapt upon as an example of the police over-stepping the mark.

I think people should be just looking at themselves over everything they do, and asking whether they need to go out for the exercise/shopping and just try and comply as much as they can and should not be looking how they can bend the rules.

If everybody did that, then I think the virus can be beaten.

Sadly not. It’s actually been around 10 months. They did a version on the Last Leg in early 2020 as well.

The school had the Autumn term to tweak their social distancing protocols and the pupils are 'regulated' and marshalled wherever they go. They have designated areas for each bubble to 'play' in - my son's class was a patch of the school-fields next to a wood (upside of the rural school they've got lots of room) but can you imagine how much sticky (and stinky) mud is generated on 'farmland' in North Hertfordshire (the downside of a rural school) - so much they 'done in' a pair of Clark's school shoes within a term.

We're getting further and further away from my original simple and straightforward (I thought) point that the Government's handling of this situation has done more to drive up the death toll than the 5 per cent of the population (your figure) who, for whatever reason, struggle to adhere to the lockdown guidance. For what it's worth I think lockdown measures have limited impact on beating this virus and the rush to cast non-compliers as (this week's) principal reason for our failure to bring it under control is just another manifestation of the blame culture which has become such a part of modern society. The virus is, I think, here to stay in some form or another, and we have to come up with ways of living with it that do not involve forcing people to stay indoors.

Indeed. Had these two women crashed their vehicle who would have to come and out and expose themselves ? And at a time when the emergency services and police are stretched to the limit. People like these have little awareness of the consequences of their actions or what it might mean for others. Here's another example.

    https://www.cheshire-live.co.uk/new...matic-river-rescue-near-macclesfield-19607358

The measures put into place by the government were simple. But there is a persistent group of morons who continue to flout it because they lack any grey matter or are aware that other people also have rights apart from themselves. The overnment have muddied things undoubtedly and those in power have consistently set poor examples to others but if you are an individual with an iota of common sense and decency you abide by the rules. Compliance needs to be enforced with tougher penalties the problem being the enforcement due to the lack of police officers.

Despite the photographs shown of an ICU unit at Northwick Park Hospital a familiar sight to anyone commuting into London on the Metropolitan Line the usual tripe was once more espoused by the thickos. Faked photographs, patients have other illnesses, no official time stamp or agency given. It's a shame that even in the 21st century we have large numbers of morons who do not possess critical faculties.

They went 5 miles to a spot where (they said) there was no one else around. Can 5 miles not be considered “local”? The measures were not “simple” because the definition of “local” was unclear. Boris went further than that on his bike and the government said that was OK.

Suggesting they fall in a group of “morons” seems pretty harsh to me. They clearly thought they were complying, otherwise they would not have gone to the media. And it presumably seems harsh to the police, who have now withdrawn the fines.

I live on Hampshire/Sussex/Surrey borders - we were Tier 2 in the run up to Christmas.

Anyway, if available Ocado slots are anything to go by, it looks like people are heeding requests to stay away from the shops. Today, I finally managed to book a slot - in three weeks’ time.

I have a yearly pass to the local beauty spot, pre-pandemic I walked my dogs there every day . The various car parks are between 3-6 miles from my house, so I have to drive there. The place has about five separate car parks which must have a total capacity of a few thousand.

I’ve got a pass because it’s LOCAL and convenient.

It’s incredibly busy at the moment as you’d imagine, the car parks are always full and the surrounding rounds also. Going by those girls in Derby every single person who drove there must be breaking the law? Why have they even got their car parks open if driving there means it can’t be ‘local?’

5 miles is local, if you’re not allowed to drive 5 miles then car use should be banned for everything other than travelling to the supermarket and to work, but it isn’t is it.

Ocado have not coped well with the situation in my experience. I remember waiting hours to be able to get on the site to arrange a delivery for my elderly folks. The other supermarkets have stepped up well and increased capacity. I would certainly recommend setting up accounts with them all and regularly checking.

As the commentary in the article says, there have been signs for a few days now that we've reached or passed the peak in the south and things are slowing elsewhere. That can't be down to the harder lockdown that kicked in last week as it's too soon. As always though, we shuffle the rules around so often I doubt anyone can make an evidenced-based case for the effectiveness of one measure over another.

My bet is it's the result of tier 3 then tier 4 London & most of the South East went into and also the natural cycle as those likely to get it, have done, especially with this new strain. The National Lockdown was probably necessary for NHS services given elsewhere would be a fortnight behind, but we're always going to play catch-up as there's a 1- 2 week period between infection and it becoming known for the data.

An horrific 1564 deaths today, sadly a new record. Although it's the new infections that set the trend, with this level of casualties it's unlikely there will be any relaxing of measures until much lower deaths can be predicted down the line.

Would be horrific if it was true. If you look at the bbc website they ‘fess up that included numbers from the weekend. Another outrageous piece of fear mongering again. The bbc are a disgrace

It’s the Government’s figure and all the papers are reporting it too.

The figures never correspond to what has actually happened in the last 24 hrs just as the dips each weekend do not. They are simply what is recorded. Everybody knew this nine months ago, except it seems you.

Here it is in the kind of sleazy rag you probably read. Is the Mail a ‘disgrace’?

TBF, 1564 is the official figure, and our midweek figures are inflated by the weekend delays in gathering the data. On this occasion, the BBC were correct.

Germany had over 1,200 yesterday too.

It’s not like the BBC would just make it up either themselves.

They would only follow the official line .

Actually looking at your original post it seems you are the one that doesn’t realise as you clearly state ‘deaths today’

I don’t read the mail but it speaks volumes of you assuming that I do

I must confess to having a somewhat biased view on these numbers and will explain. Both my elderly mother and my wife’s equally elderly grandmother died within 2 weeks of each other at the end of 2019.

Neither of them enjoyed their life’s , doubly incontinent, unable to walk unaided etc. They both wanted to die, they had both enjoyed full and happy lives . Their journey had come to an end.

Happily they both died peacefully, and quickly. My Uncle died in April having suffered a huge stroke and was going to die from the consequences, he also caught Covid. He also died peacefully receiving kind, caring end of life care.

Might it help to put things into perspective if we were actually told how many of the deaths are people who are also at the ‘end of their journey’?

My gripe with the BBC is that on Monday they quote death figures and note that they are low due to the weekend and then 1 and 2 days later forget to mention the raised figures include weekend numbers. Their headline yesterday was record deaths for one day, blatantly misleading

Excessive deaths is probably the stat of most use if you want a top line figure and even then it probably needs to be averaged over 7 days.

That is sad and condolences to you .

But this has hit many people who hadn’t thought they were coming to the end of their life and probably thought they had years left in them as well unfortunately.

TBH I thought deaths were talked about in terms of 28 days ?

Maybe it was a typo from the BBC - now that wouldn’t be a first !

I’m fully aware that people in a constant state of denial about Covid have this view of let the virus take its course; they were going to die anyway.

Of course the year/six months or even three months lost may be pretty important months for individuals, but if you are in your middle years, those are potentially decades you are losing, as are your children and partners. Moreover, it hits random people without underlying conditions too in small but significant numbers and will hit us all if you have a medical emergency and the hospitals are full of the dying.

Quite why, after nine months of this it makes you so angry speaks volumes about you. If what you are really angry about is the affect on individuals, on their jobs and businesses, then find the right target. A proper response to the virus is not your enemy.

What is it you want? The Government announced a further 1564 deaths today. It confirmed that 1250 of these were old timers whose time was up or other sickly or disabled drains on the economy.

And if you single out the BBC why wouldn’t anyone assume you like those papers that usually do the same? Even now you haven’t criticised other sources for repeating the Government’s words. No it’s the BBC you wail. Poor you. So much wrongness for you to cope with.

It may help you to know that I watch BBC news, not Sky or ITN. I could of course watch the others on catch up, but that would leave me with less time to follow Watford news etc here . The only paper I read is the Sunday Times primarily to scatter all the bits about which drives my wife up the wall. I’m sure you’ll be pleased to hear that my chakras are beautifully balanced which means I don’t ‘do’ really angry......you may want to try and do the same?
