What Would Have Happened If Pereyra Had Scored The One-on-one At 0-0 In The Cup Final?

What would have happened?

  1. We still lose but it's at least credible and dignified, something like a 1-3

  2. It's irrelevant, we simply lose 1-6 instead of 0-6

  3. We would have dug in, frustrated the 'Citizens' and recorded a historic 1-0 win or a draw

  4. We turns up the heat and end up thrashing City 6-0

This is the big question, relevant to the here and now.

    What would have happened?

It keeps me up at night. Geri breaking down the right, squaring to the unmarked Argentine, he just has to lift it over the keeper to give Watford an improbably lead and send Hornets fans into dreamland. But the shot is smothered and hope soon evaporates.

Goals change games. Football is all momentum. Man City were fearsome front runners, once they took the lead they could just power away. But had we scored first, I just wonder. At the very least we probably would have avoided the humiliating scoreline, which many think contributed to the wider downfall of the club.

You're not the only one. I think that had that gone in, we would have played very differently for the remainder of the first half but I think they would have unlocked us eventually and we would have ended up losing but with a more respectable scoreline.

KDB might have come on earlier and that Argentine striker City left on the bench ...

So probably not much difference but we might have kept going had it been 2-1 at HT for example .

Also if Doucoure hadn’t got booked early he might have made more of an impact .

With that change in direction the game changes. Maybe we lose by less. Several months later a Man city fan decides not to make a business trip to Beijing. Some one at the Beijing company who has lost out in business decides to retire and doesn't change jobs and go to work in Wuhan China. He doesnt buy any bat. We never have to hear the word Covid and I don't have do MS Teams meetings. The world is completely different but Andre Gray is still an appalling footballer

The game would obviously been different from that point, "the butterfly effect" & all that. I still reckon they'd have stuffed us though.

It's hard to imagine anything else but a handsome Watford win, and us going on to win the title the following season, after signing Manolo Gabbiadini in the summer.

It would have been 1-8, tough afternoon for The Hornets.

But we'd have still waved our flags furiously and in protest, telling the world we'd be back.

I'd have hated to have missed that momentous club changing ******* moment.

In our hearts it's clear we would have gone on to win, signed Ings and Richarlison in the summer (who joined as they wanted to to join a club with the desire to win silverware). Sadly it's not possible to ever prove it.

I can’t believe that one game had a contributory effect to our getting relegated, despite others’ understandable claims to the contrary. We had three months to get over such a defeat and it’s not like we lost on penalties or in the last second of extra time after being ahead (West Ham is a great example of that and perhaps why they nearly got relegated the following season).

If we’d lost by just two or three goals, we’d still have had the same lacklustre start to the following season with unfit players and too many players lacking hunger after feeling they had no more to prove.

I reckon we would have held on until half time and then unleashed the Gray machine in the second half.

    Watford 8 (Pereyra 11, Gray 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, Deeney (P) 89, Deeney missed pen 90+2, Deeney sent off 90+3) - Man City 0

Always felt had it gone in we would have conceded by half time. And would have conceded 3 or 4 in the second half. Still have been a twatting. Still have gone down.

I think our biggest cup ‘if only’ remains the QF home to Sunderland in the league cup ‘85.

Honestly I think we would have hung on for a while but conceded just before and then just after half time with City getting a third later on.

Good shout. The other teams left in were: Chelsea, Sheffield Wed., Grimsby, Norwich, Ipswich and QPR. Norwich beat Sunderland in the final and both were relegated.

"If only" the ref had been brave enough not to give a pen with Rush did a swan-dive a couple of minutes from time, in a desperate attempt to avoid defeat in the FA Cup QF the following year

It doesn't matter. We all know our "Final" was beating those **** mask wearing losers from the black country. What happened after was going to happen regardless, but it's nice to think it may of gone differently. Oh, I still have my Wembley Flag.

It was much better that we simply accept our fate, roll over, and take our lube-free pounding like the good little losers we are.

I think if we had lost that game we wouldn’t have capitulated in the league, with a final to look forward to, and may have finished 7th. We wouldn’t have started the following season in a sulk and wouldn’t have been relegated. Felt great at the time but winning that game cost us everything IMHO.

I don’t remember this at all. Although, looking it up, I had been at the 4-1 win against West Brom in the previous round. I guess I shrugged off, just assuming we would have another decent chance at a Cup again.

Bigger one is still why no penalty for the ball hitting Kompany on the arm.

My own 'what if?' from the game is what if Javi had picked Janmaat rather than a woefully out of form Kiko?

Who then went on to be beaten in the air by Silva...

My memory is that Sunderland played very well on the night, backed by a large noisy away support, and deserved the win, while we didn't really turn up.

Good shout but the semi against Palace in 2016 tops it for me. We finished above them in the league that year. We then would have had to face a poor Man Utd side in the final.

Maybe we would have lost anyway but in 1987 we could have had a better chance v Spurs with a real keeper in goal?
