There’s a brilliant outtake clip of MV supposedly nodding off half way through an overnight sports bulletin on 5 Live, although he always insisted he didn’t and that it was a technical issue!

I remember Chris Moyles used to enjoy playing it!

Somewhere in my loft I have an end of season video with Mike doing the commentary. I think during the Roeder era, maybe slightly before. It was some sort of sort of gala dinner, and most of the video consisted of each player individually coming out on stage and Mike trying to summon up some excitement each time, despite few if any of the players were household names. I’d like to think that in my time I’ve presented a few radio shows that were slightly less sleep inducing than that, although no doubt my audience would probably agree to disagree! I fear if lockdown lasts past February, I may be forced to find the video and give it a play.

(Note to younger readers lol. Video predated DVDs as a way of watching movies and documentaries)

Ah yes, the world of VHS and even before that, BETA MAX. Who didn't love getting the tape caught in the Video Player having it wrap around the gears inside. That
and the "pause" function, which created a moving still picture.

Yes I wrote that with a big grin on my face as I was typing. Why add happy zz ? I am merely being objective. As I said many times before nothing would make me happier than to see one of the Academy players become a first team fixture. I am hoping that Langston, Abbott and Janjeva make up our defence in a few years for example. However he played the way he does in u23 games where he is afforded more time and space. He as The Recluse and reids great match archive if you watch it has these 'plays'. He needs to think quicker and improve his decision making. Not just merely running with the ball, cutting in and shooting or hurling in crosses wildly. Lift the head up and pick a pass when you get into space. Hold onto the ball instead of releasing when under pressure. His strength needs work on that for instance.

Throwing youngsters into the mix with a little fearlessness on their part can occasionally work but more often than not ruins their progression. To be honest Hungbo will make a career in the lower tiers with what he has.

I do love it when people are accused of 'writing off' our academy products despite the fact that every single player that's been through the academy since the change of ownership has left the club without playing more than a couple of nothing games.

I wrote my response with a grin on my face too, and was more about the fact that I see Deeny and Gray adding 0% to the team so Hungbo couldn't be any worse, whatever he needs to improve on.

But yes, I am generally reluctant to young players in particular after minimal exposure to league games as, I believe, many coaches of young players have not identified the best way to place to play them. Even more experienced players are written off by experienced coaching teams who just cannot see past their own noses. Just look at the examples of De Bruyne and Salah who were both dispensed with by Chelsea.

The lack of awareness young players often display is often down to their eagerness, and early lack of confidence they will certainly have, as they tend to have the "head down and dont **** up" attitude. Awareness comes with confidence in most young players, although not all of course.

I love it when someone like GD "loves it" when someone doesn't take his attitude of writing just everybody off that wears a Watford shirt. :D

I must admit I kinda miss the "fun" of VHS players, they were part of my daily life for more than a couple of decades. Not enough to actually buy one though. And what the hell would I do with one anyway?

Well, until last decade long after VHSs had pretty much become obsolete, you could still buy combined DVD/VHS players non-second hand (not sure about standalone VHS players). They still have their use if you’ve still got some good programmes recorded onto cassette that weren’t released on DVD, and there are a fair few commercially produced videos that also are only available in that format, like the BBC Fawlty Towers box set with interviews with John Cleese, and some musical releases like The Cure in Orange. Only a couple or so years ago I picked up off the street the Black and White Video, a preview of Newcastle’s upcoming 1995-96 season, a fascinating document of football in the pre-Internet age at a time just before football became the money-driven enterprise it is now. They’re not the best quality and after time some parts of them can become unwatchable, but they’re more durable than audio cassettes.

I remember seeing The Cure In Orange when it got a very short theatrical release back in the day. I kept wanting the volume in the cinema to be ramped up, which it wasn't. I must have been one of few people to have got hold of a LaserDisc player. Remember those. Huge LP sized silver dics which ushered in the age of commercial digital media. There is a veritable sh1teload of stuff that has never made it to DVD or beyond, stuff that has been on TV but due to rights issues never made it onto commercial media. Shows that have only been allowed to be broadcast once (and maybe one future repeat). Treasured items include Mark Kermode's "Hell on Earth" doc, about the making of Ken Russell's magnum opus "The Devils" and its once-thought-lost but then, recently discovered, notorious "The R@pe of Chr1st' scene, which was only sanctioned to be screened the one time because Warner executives in the US hated the film so much. The days when 4Later Programming was a must-see and C4 made decent progs instead of the property pr0n and reality crap it spews out now. Thank God for the archiving ability of a VHS/DVD-R combo machine.

I believe Graham Taylor: An Impossible Job only made it onto VHS albeit in an extended version.
