Dyche Was Ready Made For The Job?

Have you ever wondered where we would be now if Dyche had been retained?
He certainly would not live with the current structure now, as he is a strong Manager not a Coach, however at the time he would have accepted the continuity of remaining with the club.

One thing of which you can be certain - player power would be concentrated on the choice of daily lunch menu and nothing else.

I hate to think how many millions we have wasted in recruitment errors much of which could have been avoided.

I reckon it must be in Gino`s mind each time he `reaches for his cheque book`.

Dyche has developed in to a well respected club manager because his employer didn't fire him the first time he lost a few games. They even stuck with him when the Clarets went down. No chance of us showing that kind of loyalty - it's not part of the Watford 'model'

Think he said some time ago that working with the Pozzo model wasn’t for him .

Would we have really wanted turgid football such as that served up by Burnley? Not much different philosophy to Ivic
Never would happen as Dyche would have wanted more control, something Gino would not provide

Dyche screaming constantly at the 4th official isn't my idea of fun.

I honestly cannot comprehend anyone who has watched a few Burnley games wanting Dyche in charge.

He's been successful, but his style is dull as ditchwater. I don't care for his haranguing of officials either.

Sliding Doors... Yes we would have done better under Dyche. But the bedwetters would have moaned constantly about the football

And we would have not had Abdi, Vydra and FF in the team .

You may consider Burnley’s style dull and it’s true it’s not the most beautiful, but I don’t see their team playing the game at trotting pace the way ours has done this season.

Who knows what might have happened had he stayed but in my opinion we have played better football in the period since he left than we would have done had he stayed. I hate the way he is always in the 4th officials ear as well.

You haven’t actually explained why. There are many that complained about our style under Walter Mazzarri. I would count myself in the bed-wetter camp on Dyche, I wouldn’t have liked his style of play and probably wouldn’t have wanted to watch it. If you don’t like my posts then don’t read them.

Not sure how many times this needs to be said before it sinks in - nearly everyone was moaning about the style apart from a few Gino diehards. The ‘bedwetters’ merely expressed their desire for a style designed to get the best from the more talented members of our squad ie: the ones we need firing to have any chance of promotion. If we had a team full of utter cloggers, Dyche would be fine and I’d applaud him for consistently getting a tune out of them.

Shouldn't have been sacked. That's not just hindsight, I've always thought this. He never deserved to go without being given a chance.

How ironic would it be that we never sacked him and he'd still be a the club right now. He'd have a legacy approaching GT status by now and we'd have a totally different reputation.

If we’re looking back over the last 8 or so years, I would say that our style has been better than we got under Dyche. Agree there are some exceptions, this year being one of those where we have been dull for the majority of the season. I agree with the point that we would probably have got in the PL quicker and may well still be there, if we had kept Dyche. I personally are more in the bedwetter camp on this, that I would not have enjoyed watching us under Dyche. But it’s a personal preference; many would sacrifice success over style. I suspect part of the reason Dyche did not remain is that he would have wanted a much greater say over transfers

Maybe Dyche would have played a different style if he's had Abdi, Vydra, Fessi, Angela etc at his disposal ? We'll never know. I like the guy a lot and the way he gets a team playing together but I'd hate us to play football that way. We will always owe him for keeping us in the champ with the poor squad he had - otherwise the Pozzos wouldn't have bought us and none of the last 5 years would have happened....probably....

What it means is that we'd go from a hire and fire reputation to a one coach club had Dyche stayed the course as he has done at Burnley. Our perception in the football world would totally different. We'd be lauded for keeping faith in an up and coming British manager. I think fans would love Dyche and also the board for being such a stable club, doing things the right way.

That one decision has set the tone for the entire Pozzo reign.

If I remember correctly we appointed Zola purposely to attract names who probably wouldn't have otherwise come to the championship

It’s an irrelevance with the owners we’ve got, totally and utterly incompatible with each other.

It doesn’t matter if we’d have kept him, it wouldn’t have lasted 5 minutes - see Nigel Pearson.

It’s not really a question on whether we should’ve kept him, it was never a viable option with our owners and how they operate.

If you wish we’d kept Dyche then you actually wish we’d never been bought by the Pozzos, which of course is how many feel.

Personally I wouldn’t swap those Zola years for anything, Deeney day wouldn’t have happened if we’d kept Dyche, I’m not sure who would want to sacrifice that for anything.

Things are rubbish now, but for a team like Watford football is about moments, and we’ve had a lot more moments without Dyche than we would’ve had with him.

That’s totally and utterly inaccurate, the Pozzo way is the Pozzo way. If they’d kept him they would’ve Sacked him at the first sign of trouble like the other 16 managers they’ve sacked.

You’re acting like keeping Dyche would’ve been some sort of crossroads in the way the Pozzos work, it wasn’t.

Vydra, Gudmundsson and Pieters are the only three players in Burnley's squad not from a native English speaking country (and Vydra hardly plays, while Icelanders and Dutch tend to speak excellent English anyway). All three were also signed after having already spent years at English clubs.

His style would not have worked with the Pozzos' recruitment philosophy.

As I say he didn’t want to work with such a system I believe so would have walked away probably..

Or as said above been sacked at the first sign of trouble which might have been pretty quickly.

I mean he would have seen it as Deeney and 10 foreigners...

    This is a nonsense revisionism.

Dyche did well in terms of results here but it was the worse football I’ve ever seen. It was the only time I stopped caring about going to matches. Ivic’s Watford were magical to behold in comparison.

Not to mention the incompatibility with the wonderful players we signed (Abdi, Vydra, Forestieri, Abdi, Pudil, Cassetti, Abdi).

I wish Dyche well as he served this club very well, but I am very glad he was not retained as manager.

    Have to agree.

Really, the only workable solution would have been teaming Zola and Dyche up, and creating something of a “dream team”.

It may have been mentioned on here at the time, and I remember thinking it was an incredibly astute observation. I have zero doubt both Dyche, and Zola would have agreed to it instantly.

  30. Burnsy

Really? Dyche would have likely felt undermined and would have been watching over his shoulder - first sign of trouble and Zola gets the job on his own. No way in my mind would Dyche have taken it.

I also think they are polar opposite characters - I just think it would have been a total disaster. And finally, management double acts rarely ever work.

    I agree wholeheartedly.

It may have been before your time here, but these same arguments were presented many times, by many different people to one particular poster who continued to argue the Zola/Dyche “Dream Team” was the only logical solution to our managerial dilemma when Pozzo first took over.

My post was simply an homage to times of old.

Sean, we've bought in some help. Now, just sign here, where it says you cannot be trusted to manage the attack.

Can just imagine them both on the sideline looking sheepishly at each other as we are getting dominated in the middle third of the pitch.

I don't think his teams playing style would have suited the players that come over from Spain and Italy.
