Whatever way you dress it up or try and justify it, it's just utterly mental that our current captain and starting striker has authority to have a regular weekly national radio slot. It gets worse when you understand he has no guidelines from the club about what he say's on the show. It's beyond belief when he then makes detrimental comments about his employers with no recourse. All that whilst being publicly backed with a ridiculous official statement from the chairman 24hrs previous. You can love Deeney. You can despise Deeney. But it's just normal for a player or club to behave in such a way and I can't believe any other club would allow it. If Troy wants to be the big media personality, say what he feels and not be 'bland' - then retire and do exactly that. Anything less is totally unprofessional.
Most people on here would get sacked by their employer if they made a sarcastic or disparaging comment about them on a public forum liked LinkedIn, Facebook etc.
This. Could lead to anything - maybe even a GK that jumps onto YouTube to record videos as soon as the final whistle goes.
The club LIKE and WANT Troy to be who he is and what he says it would appear to me. Why? Because he gets people talking about Watford and raises our profile. There can’t be any other reason than that. He’s been good some seasons, ok in some and barely worthy of a place in the team in others but is ALWAYS ‘the main man’. The club can’t complain and generally don’t want to anyway because he is doing what they want him to do - keep us in the public eye. Generally speaking football fans like Troy and they give me very strange looks when I say I’d rather he left us now. As others have said it’s the Troy Deeney show - the club created it so there it is, it’s not even his fault really - he’s been given so much power and free reign. And now our new manager is already saying how important Troy is - after 2 training sessions. How does he know this? Because the club have told him so. The thing that bothers me the most though is I believe that half our players are scared of him rather than respect him. Look at the look of disgust Troy shows when Sarr messes up - then look what happens when it’s the other way around, where Sarr makes sure Troy is watching them gives him the thumbs up or claps the intention of the pass. I liked Troy first few games he played this season, was more quiet vocally, wasn’t shoved in front of the camera and just played football (and did ok). Few games later and it starts being the Troy Deeney show again, and as I say it’s not necessarily his doing but for me it makes him a worse player and not a good influence on others (beyond his select few eg Cleverly/ Foster).
This is true, our legion of foreign fans will be smashing up cities from Buenos Aries to Tokyo to Ouagadougou if Troy is left out of the squad.
It’s incredible the reputation Troy has. I remember the first week the pubs opened after the first lockdown, whenever that was. I met up with some mates, one a Forest fan the other a Wycombe fan. Conversation got on to football, I started saying how rubbish Troy was and they both shouted me down. According to them, put Deeney in any Championship team and they get promoted. They honestly wouldn’t have it any other way.
And on 5live/Talksport they were saying how he was our best player - the latter even said it was no surprise Ivic went as the owners "would have been surprised to see such an important player left" 5live actually had a Watford podcast guy saying Deeney wasn't at his best etc and they just rubbished him (was on the Monday Night club with Chris Sutton and Micah Richards) Mind you also said we were 5th so must be playing well and isn't it good enough... Maybe just shows how our other strikers aren't doing much or getting games? Guess it's a bit like when Sky etc say we are great from set plays and a big strong powerful side etc.
It's truly bizarre. He's managed to build an aura around himself that is actually built on absolutely nothing, certainly not any more, anyway.
Bloke who is doing some work on our house is a big Spurs fan and was 'gutted' they didn't sign him this summer.
Exactly. Common homophone, though - its free rein. But there again, free reign, King Troy; kind of makes sense.
Exactly the reason there is bound to be a chairman stupid enough to give us a fee for him. Troy hasn't been THAT player for about 5 years
He won't continue to get away with it, in my opinion. It will catch up on him, something he does or something he says, no doubt. Controversial characters tend to get away with it due to their intelligence, their talent, their pleasing personality or their good looks. Deeney has none of those and so it won't last. Maybe he realises that and is making hay while the sun appears to shine.
I think we just need to offer to cover as much of his wages as possible, or as the Pozzos love a loan fee they need to be prepared to forfeit that. Either/or, whatever gets him out.
Well if Andre Gray is allowed to get away with breaking Government rules at least twice any player would have to do something pretty serious to get into trouble. And small fines mean nothing.
Happens all the time with clubs like ours. Fans just assume players that were good 5 years ago are still good now, because they don't see enough of these players to form an opinion otherwise. The same applies to Chalobah to an extent.
The laxity at the club is a symptom of the free wheeling attitude the senior professionals seem to take to playing for Watford FC. Take the appalling preseason prior to relegation. There seems a lack of focus on preparation. Foster too concerned with a youtube channel. Gray his social life. Everyone has a right to indulge in their fancy but not when it comes to the detriment of their vocation. Instead of taking umbrage at Ivic for daring to suggest they work harder they should have realized this is exactly what they need. It reflects a poor attitude and until these senior professionals are moved on nothing will change. The younger players have not complained or displayed the self indulgent attitudes of those who should know better.
In no other sport individual or team would this be allowed to start let alone continue. It would not have happened at any club twenty five years ago. Football and footballers have sold their souls to the money men and this is the outcome. It exists at most clubs but we can see it clearly at ours. Unedifying.
Yes, but.. Is professional football sport or entertainment these days? I would say all this is edifying - sadly.
The new Plato. Yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.... Do us a favour seeing as you are paid a fortune every week. Train harder and focus on your own football. Show us you care. Going through the motions. Ah the next one, the next one. Ah hypocrisy.
He fits perfectly for Talksport Hates Arsenal... I don't think they talk about anything or anyone else. There is almost more glee in the voices on there if Arsenal lose than if one of their own team wins. Even the Sports Bar with a Man U and Chelsea fan presenting it all about Arsenal... I don't know if it's because they can easily wind up Arsenal fans who call up as its either them or Liverpool fans who ring in the most.
