Yep, just like Cleverley and Cathcart were going to be good. You suddenly develop more talent when you play in the Championship and all your flaws disappear.

I’d like to think Hughes particularly has a bit more quality though.

Gray should be able to score some goals if given the service.

They've had a couple of poor games but certainly been better than last season.

Better than abysmal doesn't necessarily mean much of an improvement. Cleverley for the most part does absolutely nothing. I have zero idea what he's supposed to be good at as a footballer. He runs around and presses a bit but can't pass, can't shoot, can't dribble, can't really tackle. He's gone from being a crap Premier League player to a slightly less crap Championship player, that's about it.

Only Ngakia has made more tackles this season and no midfielder has made more accurate long passes, or accurate short passes for us than Cleverley. I agree he's crap at dribbling. He's just a hard working player who is average at lots of things. Won't win POTS but I'm sure he'll be useful over the course of the season.

He's not great, and neither is Cathcart, but they're both decent options at this level. Not good enough for the PL anymore though.

Agree, and the good news is that his contract is up soon, so we can cut ties once we’ve been promoted and will need better midfield options.

    Oh wait......

None of these things really mean much though. The majority of his passes are "safe" passes and he creates almost nothing for us going forward. Just runs around a lot not really doing anything of much substance.

If he becomes a back up player once Capoue is fully up to speed and Hughes is back then fine, I can live with that, but he shouldn't be starting games on any sort of frequent basis. He just doesn't offer anywhere near enough, even at this level.

Can't believe people are now suggesting Cleverley is anything other than dung. It's this really where we are now?

He's no doubt a good character to have around the dressing room/training ground, hence the high regard the club have for him.

    But as a player? Terd.

Who said anything about ALL flaws disappearing.
Gray has scored goals at this level and in the PL.
Obviously it is EASIER to score in the Championship because the quality is POORER.
The Watford defence has largely been excellent this season so to pick on Cathcart is absurd.
Granted Cleverley has been disappointing but like some others he is coming back from a long injury layoff, adapting to a new division and coach.
To just slag off, seemingly, everything Watford are doing is rather sad.
If you expect everything to be perfect you are at the wrong club otherwise put things into some perspective and try to have a balanced point of view.
Ivic and most of the players are putting in a shift under quite difficult and unusual circumstances.
For all the glory of the Zola season we didn't get promoted because we couldn't defend properly.
Nearly all of us would rather see swashbuckling Zola/GT type football but this season, more than ever, calls for a solid foundation and a return to competing in all games and gaining confidence by picking up points.
Ivic has done that and with a full squad at his disposal will be able to build on this solid foundation.

Fox in the box. Decent goals per minute even in the prem. Our best option for goals. After months of not having a striker in the box (not playing one or Troy jogging 30 yards from goal) it will be refreshing seeing someone in the penalty area actually trying to score. We can celebrate the goals and enjoy vicious banz for the misses.

I’m not sure he does. Gray’s rapid speed appears to me to be a myth (at least since he joined Watford). He’s been caught countless times by the recovering defender in one-on-ones.

You are right though that he probably is the fastest of the current strikers and therefore likely to get on the end of some of Sarr’s excellent crosses.

The best thing about Gray is his movement. If Glen Murray could use a bit of movement to create a pretty decent chance at the end of the Wycombe game, then Gray will create plenty of chances in this division.

And in the off chance we don't go up at the first time of asking, we'll have a decent championship midfielder available

And if we don't go up the next year? I reckon he's got 4 years at this kind of level, and hopefully we'd find a buyer for him if we went up, like we did for Forestieri and McGugan.

  20. Jumbolina

He'd be 33 at the end of his old contract. If we were still championship he'd be begging us to give him another year. If we go up this year good luck getting a buyer for an average injury prone 32 year old with 2 years remaining on his contract and an option for a 3rd. Who is going to match that? Club never learns.

They are still in the relegation zone and those players scored against the team bottom of serie B which is about the equivelant of what Wealdstone are at :D

Agreed. This clearly won’t be a Zola 12/13 season.

I don’t really enjoy watching us play so far this season , but we ve shown enough to be title contenders .

Two assists for Pereyra, another for Deulofeu and a goal for Pussetto in a swashbuckling 3-2 away win.

Are we allowed to be a bit jealous yet?

Amazing how we did not let Ignacio have an opportunity but real rubbish like Gray constantly get recalled.

Got Granada envy too now. Luis Suarez has scored five in the last nine for them. Obviously there was nothing we could do post-relegation but had we stayed up, we'd probably have had a season with him, Cucho and Estipiñan in the first team.

So frustrating that this was the time we actually had some of these young players ready to augment the squad and the gross mismanagement of last season got us relegated. We could've finally refreshed the squad and given it a younger, more upwardly mobile feel.

This is why I don’t get why people seem to think if we’d stayed up we’d have gone down anyway. We only went down last season due to repeatedly ballsing up managerial appointments.

We’d have ready made solutions for two problem areas, specifically in attack which has been our biggest issue for a few seasons, and they wouldn’t have cost us a penny.

I’m not sure if we would’ve but I think we should’ve still moved Docoure on and used the money to get a better replacement in and we’d have been a good side, pending the right managerial appointment.

Yep. Sarr and Pedro would have really pushed on too, playing alongside other young hungry cosmopolitan internationals.

Imagine the buzz there would have been around the club. Just pulled of one of the greatest of escapes and now the squad is bolstered with players with a point to prove and which didn't cost a penny, leaving us with plenty of dosh to sort out the other problems areas.

But instead of that we've got a club full of doom and gloom, with a squad full of jaded hasbeens and a dour terd conducting the most hideous brand of antifootball from on the sidelines.

No wonder Sarr and Pedro utterly detest every single second they spend in this god forsaken shyt hole. Poor ****s.

We'll be lucky to get £10m each.

And all for the sake of saving, in the grand scheme of things, a tiny amount of money last year.

To be fair, the plan would have just about worked but for van dijks intervention.

Greed is a deadly sin for a reason.

Also pride. Pride in thinking that they could patch up our pathetic defence, with the utter ****, Dawson and free signing Wellbeck to resolve our pathetic striking options, so they could focus on their fantasy of signing a young winger who would become the next Mbappe.
