I understand that just ONE rotation of the blades on a single large wind turbine creates enough power for a normal house for a full day. With water being so much denser than air, and with the tides being entirely predictable compared with wind, and with the UK experiencing some of the highest tidal differences in the world (30 feet on the west coast) I cannot understand why tidal power has not featured more in our power supply planning.

I read somewhere that a properly planned tidal power plant built into the newest Severn Bridge, that incorporated suspended turbines (for easier maintenance and less disruption to marine life), would have been as productive as the 3 largest wind farms in the North Sea. I can't remember the exact figures but I think 2 or 3 Gigawatts was mentioned. It seems to me to be an obvious alternative or addition to our portfolio compared with some others.

Maybe there are practical and scientific reasons why tidal power is not the answer that I'm not really understanding or fully grasping, but it wouldn't surprise me if there wasn't some sort of lobbying conspiracy against tidal power, driven by pure profit.

Entirely plausible , on a similar vain I heard a political commentator suggest that they wouldn’t be surprised if trump resigned in the next few weeks , allowing Pence to become president , rationale being that Pence could then pardon trump of any crimes committed as a thank you for this presidency in the same way that Ford pardoned Nixon

While tides are predictable, they don’t reliably match up with peak demands for power, and we don’t have the means of storing unused electricity. Typically, coastal estuaries with big enough tides to generate power also tend to be away from large population centers. So you’d need major investment in infrastructure to transmit electricity from generation to population, but even then, with power only being generated between 8-10 hours a day, it’s really not good for anything beyond supplementing traditional power generation. Developing effective storage of unused power might change things in the future, but as there is no way to ramp up tidal/solar/wind generation to meet peak demand, it isn’t able to meet the energy demands of modern life.

For balance, I should add that I work for a major oil and gas company.

Yes, I am sure it isn't a s straight forward as I suggest.

Although my understanding is that modern turbines would extract more like 20 hours of power a day when considering that turbines could be used on both incoming and outgoing tides. Yes, storage is a big issue, as is location. But if we have offshore and unpredicatable windfarms 50 miles away from the Lincolnshire coast and even further away from cities, than say the Severn Estuary is from Bristol, Gloucester, Cardiff and Swansea, the Clyde is from Glasgow, the Forth is from Edinburgh, the Humber from Hull and Grimsby and the Mersey is from Liverpool and Manchester, and the Thames is from London, the Tyne from Newcastle and the Tees from Middleborough. All of the those estuaries have a tidal difference of 20 to 30 feet. Also the tides differ from the west and east coast by 3 or 4 hours, so when one side is not efficient, the other side will be. And don't we already use power from one part of the national grid to supplement shortages elsewhere?

And yes, I think that most of the anti tidal power lobbying is from the oil industry.

There was a tidal lagoon planned in Swansea, but it keeps getting blocked due to 'not being cost effective' and environmental impact.

Ultimately I think it comes down to there being too much profit in oil and gas, and those at the top having too much influence in government decision making. O&G is a dying industry (I got out 4 years ago) but the old guard can't accept that and will keep peddling using hydrocarbons until they retire/die, once they're shifted you'll find that renewables such as tidal are suddenly viable. It's nothing to do with the tech or storage, it's all about £££ and influence.

I think something people misunderstand about the towers is that structurally they actually performed quite well under the impact. Buildings, particularly highrise are designed to prevent progressive collapse - i.e. when one (or more, depending on requirements) major structural element is removed it does not immediately cause the rest of the building to collapse. There was a significant period of time between the impacts and the collapse, implying that the design actually worked. If the evacuation routes were correctly designed (instead of lightweight walls) and of sufficient size (which they weren't) there should've been enough time to evacuate. The towers would then have been demolished if they hadn't collapsed of their own accord, but by that time nobody should've been left in there.

If you want to see a structure which performed badly, look up Ronan Point in London. A gas explosion on about the 5th floor caused 1/4 of the building to collapse instantly, the WTC didn't do this.

I'm wanting to absolutely hate this thread but I just can't. It's good to see such things being discussed without the hysterics you'd see on other platforms. I'd gladly throw hot darts at most conspiracy theorists.

Don't you think it's odd that the more we cover the planet in cameras the less UFO's and ghost images we're seeing?

I’ve got a mate who is into all the Area 51 and Roswell stuff, really believes it.

I do not believe that Aliens/UFOs have visited earth, but it stands to reason other life forms exist elsewhere in the universe. Isn’t it Kepler 22b or something that has all the conditions for life but is 600 odd light years away.

For another life form that is so far away that they are undetectable by us, yet have the technology to reach us would make no sense just to do a covert drive by.

Fermí Paradox is an interesting discusión on this, basically statistically life must exist in the universe but empirically no firm evidence exists , one possibility is that civilisations destroys themselves before they manager to leave their planets and explore the galaxy (the great filter theory) , other option is that one civilisation must be the most advanced in the universe and perhaps that’s us.

wasn’t the theory (I have no idea about validity) that the person identified by Rusia as being Hitler was in fact a body double and that he escaped to Argentina with other high ranking officials in a U Boat (or he may have stopped for a while in a secret base in the Antarctic) ?

not sure about Hitler but it’s fairly undisputed that a lot of Nazis fled to Argentina (who I think supported Germany in WW2)

We are not alone in the Universe. There are thousands of intelligent species in addition to hoomins. Our dogs and cats, let alone the primates, are going to be more like us than any alien ever could be.

The conspiracists say it was the first stab at a New World Order , Europe under one banner. But what I have never really got is that in most NWO conspiracies the enemies are the Jewish (predominately the Jewish Banking Families) so Hitler was either actually a puppet or the Jewish Bankers (which makes no sense) or was right (which is unthinkable).

World War 2 was certainly a good time for the conspiracist.

No. But we can’t claim it infinite is on the evidence. I think there is also some logical fail in there, so an infinite universe would have an infinite number of everything, so surely there would be evidence?

But it’s moot, because our observable and nearby universe is already way too big in time and space for us to explore. There could have been civilisations, but they would have to be nearby in the celestial instant of our existence, which is very tiny indeed.

I’m even less keen on multiverses and believe any physicist considering them should get a proper job.

None of this is conspiracy though?

Hasn’t heard of that one until now but it doesn’t frazzle my brain. The Western powers and the Soviets were not natural or easy allies. I suppose plans would have been drawn up for all sorts of scenarios.

I am of the opinion that like the "new suspect" every year regarding the disappearance of a child

I can’t understand the practicalities of an infinite universe , in the same way that I can’t get my head round the Big Bang , what was before nothing and how does nothing become something, how can something be infinite ,yes it can massive and way beyond our comprehension but infinite makes no sense.

Like you I don’t agree with multiverse what’s the scientific explanation,

the two theories I mention above (Fermí and great filter) are used by established scientists to answer some of the questions about why we haven’t seen inteligente extraterrestrial life , for intelligent life to make it to the stars it needs to evolve (no idea but say 1 in a million chance) , avoid being wiped out by natural disaster (say meteor destroying the planet) and then finally has to evolve beyond war and greed to avoid starving / killing itself. And then even if they do make it to the stars is FTL travel possible.
