I want him to be given time. I was pleased with his appointment and liked what he said and did early on...

    However..

I’m getting worried I was wrong because it’s hard to remember a more boring, puerile, tactically inflexible few matches for many a while.

He’s starting to look as if maybe he’s a one trick pony quickly getting found out.

People may say, and probably quite rightly, don’t be so reactionary, but we can only react to what we are seeing and where we think we are heading.

I don’t feel we are improving from the early games, despite the return of several key players.

I find it hard to believe that we can manage to make attacking talents such as Sarr & Pedro look like boring water carriers. Is anyone surprised they’re playing with faces like smacked ar5es?

Why is it, this club don't seem to be able to find a good manager. Bring back Elton John, he knew how to do it.

Because our owner is a completely clueless fool who has entirely lost the plot.

Zola: No tactics, just vibes, but at least put us within a whisker of promotion and gave us some great memories along the way. Completely ran out of ideas and then fell on his sword

Sannino: A very short-term appointment, did what he was brought in to do, until the players started to rebel and his position became untenable

Joka: An unqualified success in the Championship, albeit he wasn't given enough time to flop in the Prem after the achievement of taking us up

QSF Mk1: Came with insane pedigree for a first year Prem club like we were, did a job even if it did go massively sour at the end

Mazzarri: Kept us up in very uninspiring fashion, but had ****tons of injuries to deal with, and in hindsight he was bang on about Deeney even all those years ago

Silva: Thought he could be the one to finally give us a bit of stability and take us to the next level, but got the hump after 9 games (may have had some disagreements with the board, but I can't excuse him wanting out after 9 games). Subsequent spell at Everton suggests he wouldn't have been the one

Javi: Steadied the ship (albeit in fairly turgid fashion, there were famously many on here who wanted him out after we couldn't score an away goal the whole rest of that season). Did surprisingly well for most of the next season, probably lulled us into a false sense of security, and when it went wrong, he couldn't reverse it. Didn't help that he was given Craig Dawson to shore up the defence, but probably should have changed up his system to use Sarr though

QSF Mk2: An unmitigated disaster, tried to shore up the defence to limited success, and utterly ruined any chance of scoring goals just when we started needing wins

Pearson: A pashun merchant, very limited, especially when Sarr and/or Deulofeu were missing, but a) still almost kept us up from nowhere, and b) was undermined by Giraldi

So yeah, a theme emerging here of some excellent managers coming here, doing some good, but being undermined by a mix of Giraldi picking the team, or complete and utter complacency in the transfer market, and it all going massively sour before too long. Read into that what you will...

I think the last day capitulation means even Joka can’t be said to have an unblemished record that season.

Call me a happy-clapper, but I think the impromptu pitch invasion was more to blame for that setback than anything Joka did

Tbf to Ivic, he still hasn't got a striker playing for him yet. He can only manage with what he has got. And none our midfielders in the middle of the park are goal scoring ones. So we will rely on a striker even more.

Guardiola's Man City are at least 2 levels down from their capabilities without a striker in their team. Today it took a defender to beat Sheff Utd. With Aguero and Jesus in their team you'd fancy 2 or 3 goals at least. I don't think Man City supporters are calling for Guardiola's head somehow. Imagine Spurs without Keane if he got injured right now as well, they would not be the same.

I don't think Ivic has suddenly become a really bad manager at this point. Too early to make them kinda accusations. Just needs a focal point up front so that Pedro and Sarr can play in their natural positions. No team has rolled us over they been 1-0 defeats. Just need a striker playing and some belief back.

Big win today scoring 3 goals to boot. 1 point off automatic promotion after 10 games, despite not playing the good football Ivic (and many fans) probably want.

Did Pearson not just inconveniently debunk the myth of Giraldi interfering, or are we just ignoring that?

Credit to Vlad for not just giving that penalty to Deeney, you just know, that any other manager would have just let big man Troy take it. Starting to look more threatening going forward (even in this flawed formation), although for whatever reason we have regressed defensively

  20. Chumlax

That reason is probably that we can't go a game without changing the defence around, which would normally hinder an understanding between them anyway, let alone when you consider that we have three centre backs instead of the usual two trying to understand each other.

I assume it is some kind of injury prevention strategy, but you can really see them lacking in an understanding of which one to go and which one to stay, where they are in relation to each other, etc etc, so to my mind it would be better to stick with a group as standard and plug in someone to a specific role if a replacement is required rather than constantly interrupting them; especially now fitness should be getting up to where it needs with games under their belts having reached double figures.

Much more confident he's going to get some good work out of Deeney this season after that little cameo.

I agree. If we had the same back 3 consistently there would be an understanding, chemistry, and organisation back there. Never easy when it changes a lot.

    Good analysis.

Only thing I would say is that Joka did great for sure but he was flattered by the fact that we were such a well oiled machine by that point with an incredible first XI and squad, that the best thing he did was not meddle too much. His substitutions were spot on but I think more credit should be given to Dean Austin .

  30. Hogg-DEENEY!!!

Good point, I think Austin was a big reason for our relative success under QSF the first time. The upheaval had started so it was good for Quique to have someone who knew the club. Often go under the radar do assistant managers, but they are often crucial

Some poor performances but Ivic isn't exactly making a pigs ear of the season so far.

I'm still hopeful he'll last a full season and get us up or close to it.

Ivic plays it a bit too safe, but to be honest, he is working with a squad that half the time doesn't bother showing up, so I can see why he starts out conservative.

He does need to put more players in the box when we are losing away, as the pitches are sh*te and cloggers are going to park the bus. That's why Perica and Deeney will be vital for us this season. At that point, there is nothing wrong with playing Kiko as a left back.

More of a pressing concern however is our inability to defend set pieces. We're going to continue to struggle as long as we give away two or three clear goalscoring opportunities a match. It's a shame that we don't have a defender with pace, as then we could play Sierralta and Ekong to make us better at attacking and defending set pieces.
