Pozzo Signings That Had The Worst/best Impact

Biggest impact would be pretty well everyone from the first season under the Pozzo's. Completely transformed the ambitions of the club from survival to promotion, with style.

Everything after that was simply progression (apart from the relegation bit...)

Albert Riera played for our club and scored a goal, and yes, you all forgot.

Nothing to do with the player, it's the fact that if the money was spent on a decent CB LB and goalscoring striker we probably wouldn't have been relegated (as I already explained in my post). I'm talking about impact on the position of the club, not impact on the pitch!

Wasting that money on Oulare didnt have a major negative impact cos other players stepped up that season, particularly Ighalo.

I've already explained this twice. The Sarr money could've been spent on the players we needed to stay in the division. We spunked £30m on a star player and got relegated. With Ricky we made £30m on a player who did ok for us in a season we stayed up.

I think QSF preferred Oulare to Vydra cos he didnt like Vydra's attitude.

Pretty bizarre logic. With Gerry out of the team we had ZERO goal threat other than Sarr. Ok, if we don’t sign Sarr someone else plays in his spot, but who? So we use the money on upgrading our defence (which was only our third worse defensive season out of five anyway) but blunt our attack even more, thus inviting even more pressure into our slightly stronger defence. Good plan.

Meanwhile fast forward to this season, the defence is fine but we can’t score for toffee. Everyone is desperate for Sarr to stay otherwise apparently without him we’ve no chance of promotion.

    Watford fans aye.

Stick Murray in the Worst Impact section if you want. No strikers playing and he can only make the bench. :p

    But I don’t understand how that’s Sarr’s fault?
And you say he has to stay because he ‘owes’ us?!

It's not Sarr's fault. He's a great talent, lovely guy and has a great attitude, cried when we got relegated. Putting himself on the line in the Champo when there was talk of him moving to United when others had refused to play showed great character. However we spent £30m on him and got relegated, he only scored 6 goals and didnt do a lot after lockdown. He should stay and try to get us back into the Prem. As I said, he owes us!

I dream of Sarr racing down the wing, putting players on their backs with his skills and passing through to JP who gets another goal with yet another easy tap in!

6 goals and 4 assists in 28 games (22 starts). He was 21, making his debut season in one of the toughest leagues in the world, in one of the worst teams in said league, when he's not even a striker. Those are great numbers and I don't think anyone can really fault Sarr for that.

Im not faulting him, I'm saying blowing our transfer budget on Sarr proved to be a big mistake. My evidence for this is the fact that we got relegated.

Not getting somebody like Sarr would probably have resulted in less goals and relegation anyway.

Not quite true, he had late sub appearances in the league at Swansea and against Leicester. Didn’t think he looked too bad in the latter game and was surprised he wasn’t given another chance, but he clearly didn’t impress enough in training.

Yet take those 6 goals and 4 assists away, spend the money on defenders and we stay up, apparently.

Going back to Sarr and Dawson - I think it’s harsh to blame either of them for our relegation and cite signing them as primary contributory factors to us going down. Getting relegated can be attributed to a myriad of causes, of which Dawson and Sarr fall pretty low in the list, chiefly poor preparation/management, low confidence, injuries, bad luck, COVID-19, too many key players not consistently pulling their weight, drops in form that not even the Pozzos could anticipate (the most drastic being that of Gray, who went from being at least a useful impact sub to not even able to impose himself against a relegated League 1 team in three and half hours of football). We’d almost finished top 10 and got to the FA Cup final the previous season, and IIRC most thought Dawson to be at least a reasonable signing and an upgrade on Mariappa, and it’s likely that if we’d signed him earlier, we’d have finished higher in 2018-19.

IMO, the greater crimes last season were not signing at least one full back, a decent striker and only signing Pussetto in the January transfer window (I understand signings were at a premium but the Pozzos should have realised this and made damn sure the one or two players we did get were the ones to keep us up).

Ever heard of the butterfly effect? You’re aware it wasn’t our worst defensive season either? (we’ve had two worse and two better) but it was our worst season for scoring goals in the premier league by quite some distance, we scored 36, not even a goal a game.

Sarr scored 6 goals, take those 6 goals away and it leaves us on 30 goals, four more than Norwich. Take his assists out as well and we score 26, the same as Norwich.

Good attackers take pressure off the defence, Sarr not only scored 6 goals he created 4 assists the opposition can’t score while we’re up the other end of the pitch can they?

Sarr was a constant menace and his pace was always a threat; this occupies the opposition players and means they can’t commit as many people forward, again helping the defence and taking pressure off them. If Sarr isn’t in the team then the opposition can push more players forward and keep a much higher line, putting our defence under greater pressure.

Conversely better defenders can’t improve the attack, If we signed VVD he can’t help Troy become a better striker or give Puessto more ability.

Have you watched any of our games this season We’ve let in one goal, but it’s not really helping us put chances away at the other end is it?

Saying we signed Sarr and got relegated is proof as to why we got relegated is a bit pathetic also.

Was signing Andre Gray for £18m the reason we stayed up that season?

Again, Im not faulting him. It's the fact that we spent £30m and got 6 goals and nothing after lockdown. Im not blaming a young talented player with a good attitude for that. But it was a mistake that led to our relegation. We should've sold Deeney Doucs and Pereyra and reinvested the money in a rebuild which couldve included buying Sarr. The problem (as I keep saying) was we spent most of our budget on a player who wasnt ready to do what was needed to keep us up. I dont believe we couldnt have found the right players to keep us up with a £30m budget.
