I genuinely think it'd be a good idea to give Ivic an extra year on his contract right now.

Give the players the message he's here long enough to be worth effort investing in buying into his way of working.

    Plus he seems excellent.

Absolutely agree. Would need some leadership and clarity of thought from above though so it won’t happen.

Pretty sure we have an additional year option. If so he's essentially already on a 2 year contract, for all intents and purposes.

Not that I'd be opposed to seeing a longer contract for him based on what I've seen so far.

NP seemed to more of a motivational manager. He had an eye for the right type of character, but CS seemed to be the brains of the two moreso, especially with the rumour of us offering him a contract after NP was sacked and the joining Villa almost immediately.

VI is the best of both qualities in that he's been ruthless with the squad mentality and has severely bruised the wantaway's egos by not letting them sulk within the playing group if they do not want to play for the club and give their all. Sarr being case in point where even though he may want a move he specifically asked VI to play as he will not let it stop him giving his all on the pitch and that is respected by VI.

He's also shown a strong tactical nous by adopting a lineup that makes sense every game and a clear philosophy of football regardless of personnel which is extremely impressive, especially as he hasn't really used 5atb previously.

I don't think he would have done well firefighting like NP for the major reason of he would have demanded time and guarantees regardless of division, as well as that he wouldn't have had the same buy in from the players that would expect and demand.

It's still early days of course, but I think he's a good one and someone who genuinely wants to develop the younger players. That must be music to the owners' ears, so I'd be surprised if they do not attempt to offer him a contract extension early in the new year if we're still doing well.

He is a good manager. Needs time for his squad to settle and all be available. Bit disappointed like many by the balance change when Sema came on for TDB. And then taking Kiko at LWB when he is a right footed player. It does not help though that when Tom went off he only has Cleverly there who is carrying a sore hamstring. Or not sacrificing a defender for Murray. Then again he may think Murray is well off peak fitness.

Shame Penaranda was not on the bench. In the last few minutes of matches his willingness to carry the ball unlike many others could win us crucial decisions. Vlad obviously does not fancy Pussetto either or have that much faith in Quina at present.

Hughes and Gray would add some good Championship quality and experience.

We looked tidy and neat but lacked any real threat and of course our set plays as usual were toothless apart from Garner's free kick.

Peñaranda must be thinking what's the point of being here, has he even been in a match day squad in the league this season? Pussetto clearly doesn't want to be here, nobody here fancies him, what is the point?

I'll give him 2 or 3 more games but so far he seems to have us playing turgid, horrible stuff in a system which doesn't suit our players.

Talking tough in a few interviews doesn't make up for being a tactical idiot.

Yes quite possibly correct. But to use a player who has been completely useless who wants to leave ahead and to him is damning stuff!

In our four league games, we've hardly had any strikers available, Murray played against Weds and was well off the pace, Perica had a bright half hour that game but then decided to lose his head against Newport. Wait until him, Gray and Deeney are back, wait until Hughes is back before starting to judge him, today wasn't great by any means, but he's hamstrung

  17. wfcmoog

He certainly didn't make the best use of the squad available to him today and his changes were dogs hit.

What would you have done differently? We were doing well until TDB came off, whose fault it was that he didn't come off immediately, I don't know. Quina or Cleverley would have been the obvious choice on paper, but Vlad doesn't seem to fully trust Quina yet, and Cleverley wasn't 100%. Maybe he could have given Murray longer to give us an option up front, but he's yet to do anything for us really, so we're still very much hamstrung by absentees

Take off one of the centre backs at some stage before 90 minutes - They had one striker isolated up against 3 centre backs, what is the point of playing with a back 5 when you are 1-0 down with 10 minutes to go and struggling to create chances as they are bullying your midfield because they have an extra man. Cleverley, Quina or Pussetto as an extra option in midfield might well have changed things, and Quina at least offers an option from distance when we are struggling to create.

Above all though - he should not bring on Murray at any point ever - it is the equivalent of choosing to play with 10 men.

If I was Penaranda, and Murray was getting in the squad ahead of me, I think I would just retire. I can't imagine how utterly dreadful you have to be that Glenn Murray is considered a better option.

  21. Hogg-DEENEY!!!

    Hogg-DEENEY!!! Squad Player

Fair point about the centre backs, maybe 3 was unnecessary late in the game, but there were question marks over the two midfielders on the bench, Cleverley wasn't 100% fit, and Quina hasn't done it yet this season (I probably would have put him on rather than Sema, but I'd be lying if I thought he'd be a definite game hanger). I see what you mean about Murray, but the biggest problem we had all game, bigger than the midfield, was the fact that we didn't have anyone with a striker's instinct, Murray might be old, but unfortunately he's the only real striker we have at the moment. I've liked what I've seen of Peñaranda for us, but he's not an out and out striker, and besides, we don't know what he's like on the training ground. Less said about Pussetto the better. Ultimately I think whatever we did today, we were on a hiding to nothing once they scored, whatever combination we had on the pitch I think we'd still have been relying on them making a mistake

I dont think we created any good chances for a striker though. We could have had Aguero on the pitch and he wouldn't have got a goal if he didn't create the chance himself.

I accept that Penaranda isn't an out and out striker, but he is creative, and we currently don't have that.

Murray may have been an out and out striker at some point, but he currently is not. We might as well stick Kabasele or someone up top who can at least muster something more than a waddle.

  23. Hogg-DEENEY!!!

    Hogg-DEENEY!!! Squad Player

I think at the moment there's just a general lack of creativity in the squad. Hopefully that will improve when Hughes returns, as for Peñaranda, God knows what's up with him

When the window closes and the want away players who are still with us finally fall under the full control of Vlad we won't be totally reliant on Kids. Then the better of the experienced players who have not got a move away will have to knuckle down, if for no other reason than to put themselves in the shop window for January.

Therefore hopefully Vlad will be able to play a stronger team using them, and the added bonus is that the youngsters should be able to learn from these guys too, and hopefully then be better able to step up and replace those guys if they finally get a move in January. Furthermore, if those want away players finally get their wish and get a move in January we will probably get a better price for them too, as by then they will possibly have impressed potential buyers, which is something Vlad has not allowed them to do so far.

I actually think that that might have been Vlad's master plan all along, because refusing to use many of them in our first four games and playing damage limitation football by using a weaker side, has kept those players out of the shop window and possibly created doubt in the mind of potential suitors as to whether they were worth a punt or not.

With the players likely to be fit (and desperately hoping that the Capoue rumour is true) would love something like this next game:

    Foster

    Ngakia
    Troost-Ekong
    Cathcart
    Femenia

    Capoue
    Chalobah

    Sarr
    Cleverley
    Sema

    Gray

I love the way people twist fantasy over reality on here.

Peneranda came with a reputation but has done absolutely nothing as a player for about 3 years. If he was halfway decent we would have sold him. He's only here because he's crap and unsellable.

That is why we were relegated and that is why we won't go up, because our first team is a holding spot for players in the shop window or a dumping ground for those who can't be sold on. That's not how you build a team to achieve anything.

Need to play a target man/ holding forward, feeding JP and Sarr. Without reverting to the big hoof upfield

Because Pussetto is a 3/10 player and Penaranda a 2/10 player living off a goal vs Cov(?) reserves 2 years ago? There's a reason no coaches have chosen to use him since he's been available to them. Who would you drop for the team to carry him ?
3-5-2 doesn't work without a target man. Pedro and Sarr need a target man to play off.

I'd probably have Garner instead of Chalobah, with Capoue and Clevs as the deeper midfield two and Garner the slightly more advanced midfielder. We might also have Hughes back after the break, in which case just swap Chabs for Hughes.

T-E and Cathcart might complement each other better, but it would also be harsh to drop Kabs rather than Cathcart considering he's been our best CB so far (excepting that one pass vs Luton).

If there is ever a choice between Pussetto and Peneranda for the bench I’d go for Penaranda. Pussetto is weak, unsuitable for the league and
doesn’t want to be here. Neither player has showed anything to date so given the choice I’d go with the guy who wants to be here. It’s the policy we take with every other player after all.
