I binged through the second series of Criminal on Netflix over the weekend, there were only 4 episodes. Each episode was better than the previous, incredibly good watching.

Watched the first two episodes this weekend, really enjoyed watching David Tennant in the first episode and Hayley Atwell who played Stacey in the second one. What an actor! I’ve never seen her in anything else but I’m going to find some other stuff she’s done.

David Tennant is some actor. His portrayal of Dennis Nilsen was excellent.

Ah yes that’s on the list for this week too.

Got some really cheerful viewing lined up!

It's one of those that I liked and disliked at the same time. I won't go into the details as it may spoil your viewing.

I never watched the rebooted Battlestar Galactica. I had watched the original back in the late eighties when it was on BBC2 and thought at the time it was pretty exciting stuff. The reboot knocks the old one into a cocked hat given it's character arcs, philosophical musings , what is it to be human and general realism. Currently at the start of series 3 on New Caprica where Gaius Baltar is in a pickle.

You made a good decision. Such a fantastic show. Glad you gave it a shot!

EDIT: also, the soundtrack for the show is simply excellent.

The first 5 eps are probably the highpoint of the series. You really should binge eps 1-4.

I watched the final ep last night and I've just re-watched that trailer and can I just re-iterate that the promo bears little relevance to the actual TV series.

Binge watching something called "Coppers" at the moment on sky. It's set in mid 1800's New York and is based on NYC police detectives, just basic easy viewing.

As I said I watched the original as a small child after tea/supper and the reboot is swiftly becoming my favourite science fiction series ever. The realism is what holds me. Same applies to the great science fiction films like Ikarie-XB1, Solaris, 2001, Moon nd Alien, Blade Runner , Prospect, Pilot Pirx's Inquest, Dead Mans Letters and Arrival.

You're obviously not watching closely enough.

    You've all the other stuff:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica
The webisodes really add to the story you're watching now (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica:_The_Resistance).
I really liked the, cancelled, Caprica (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caprica) and the telling of stories from the viewpoint of the Cylons is a real gem (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica:_The_Plan).
I real can't see what the reboot will add to story (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica#Second_reboot).

I'm breaking my own rules about not forming an opinion on a TV series until I've seen at least 3 eps, but last night (waiting for the crab apples to burst) I watched the first episode of this (and the trailer is very '1st episode heavy') and I was blown away by how interesting and good it was:

The acting, plot, settings, scenes, characters, characterisations, SFX and actors' performances have got me hooked (this may have just been Ridley Scott's direction - he also directs one other episode - the next one).

Last episode of this compulsive series tomorrow :( but hoorah!!

Also every night I have a 45min time slot where I like to 'review' all the day's CCTV footage from moog's 'security' cameras I have to do my OT/PT exercises which has become "Dad's TV time". Because of the wait for the last episode of Raised By Wolves I was searching my storage device for something to put on and discovered a series I had completely forgotten about: the HBO/BBC co-production Years and Years. I'm on the 4th ep and it's really grown on me as a very clever take satirical take on 'woke' culture and an "apocalyptic" future (all of the performances have been stunning especially Emma Thompson who's really 'channelling' Christine Hamilton/Katie Hopkins/Claire Fox and appears to be taking a more prominent role in the story). I see it was really praised by the critics (in the UK and US) so I'm assuming that translates as it didn't 'grab' a mass UK audience (I've just seen it's still on iplayer)?

Will give Raised by Wolves a go, looks interesting.

Discovery and Mandalorian return this month.

All episodes of Brave New World are released on the 2nd October I think which could be good (never read the book so don't really know much about the story/plot)

Looking forward to neXt which is out on the 6th October - can't imagine why Amazon never picked this one up.

Where are you guys watching programmes on HBO/Fox - are you just streaming online through Kodi?

Watched the first series of Cormoran Strike last night. Only three episodes in each series but really worth watching. I think there two more series but I suspect there may be more as there are five books

I really enjoyed the first three series of this but was rather disappointed with the last one that’s just been broadcast. The storyline was obsessed with the will they/won’t they relationship between the lead characters, dealt with it in a heavy-handed way and really got in the way of the plot.

It's watchable but very much detective drama by numbers. The will they/won't they with Holliday Granger is terribly forced.

Battlestar Galactica. Enjoyed it very much first time around. Had completely forgotten Iain Duncan Smith was in it though.

BBC 2 showing a retrospective on Michael Palin and 'Around the World in 80 Days'.
BBC4 showing the series from 9-10.40pm. Marvellous stuff. Palin is so warm and friendly and the humanity displayed is touching.
    Very well worth revisiting.

Latest thing found on the HDD "Zomboat" (from itv2 - I *think* it's also on their hub):

It's a bit up and down but the writing crackles (when it's up):
The Boring Dead's back as well.

Frakking brilliant. I have watched the series to the end. I cared for those characters and the deep friendships between Adama and Tigh, Lee and Starbuck for instance. It was all a bit teary eyed at the end but somehow I find the ending unsatisfying. Too arbitrary for my liking. The proposed endings of astronauts finding debris from the Galactica on the Moon or ship remains on Earth would have piqued me more.

Indeed. Watched the first two episodes yesterday. He is full of natural charm and empathy and observes human nature very accurately. Taking the rubbish round in Venice, chatting with the Evzones outside the Greek parliament and that really touching conversation with the captain of the ship taking passage from Suez to Jeddah. A lovely and wise man indeed. The Espresso Egitto is still sailing around the Mediterranean. Sadly many of the people featured in the first two episodes like the cart driver in Alexandria must have passed on as well as Terry Jones. Reeves and company cannot hold a candle to Michael.

Well the German's re-invented the genre of war at sea with the unsurpassed masterpiece that is "Das Boot". Looks like they're having a go at "Sword and Sandals" with this:

On Sunday I was waxing lyrical on the Palin compilation on BBC2.
On Wednesday two of my young players showed me their animated version of 'The Holy Grail' with lego characters.
They are 14 and 11 and it was excellent to see their love of Python.
I told them to send it to Terry Gilliam, who I'm sure would love it.
    Slightly off topic. Apologies.

Not something the youngsters on here would enjoy I suppose, but My Yorkshire Farm on Channel 5 is a delight. It's a about a couple with 9 kids who all live on an isolated farm, and I totally missed it before but now watching it on catch-up. Just reading up on it, and was apparently top show in the 9pm slot for several weeks.

I know it's a sort of reality TV show, but the kids are just wonderful, and the parents are just so positive.

The father and mother are always providing the children with experiences and practical things to which is the way on a farm. The children are remarkably advanced and precocious especially Clementine. So incredibly bright. It is a shame more children don't have the chance to live in the great outdoors which is a great learning experience in itself but are stuck in the urban landscape with no chance to connect to nature.
