Made good use of the loan market, bringing in Bobby Reid, Knockaert, Reed, Arter and Cavaleiro - solid Championship players.

The only permanent signing whose name I recognise is Josh Onomah's (obviously I'm referring to last summer's transfer window).

My original comment was about them not retaining the bulk of their relegation squad though, not about their incomings.

Hector was January as far as I can tell (Wikipedia) so not really relevant to a who did they keep/who did they buy discussion following their relegation.

No way he leaves after Gino has just lined the coffers with £15m off the back of a South American punt found by the ‘model’.

Model works for the owner and the club - it doesn’t work so well for the first team.

No, but given that the player only had a year left on his deal - if he was demanding a move as we believe, the Pozzo's had little choice. Decent profit on him. Whether we like the Pozzo approach or not, there are realities that any club not owned by Billionaires capable of paying stupid wages to keep players have to deal with. This is one of them. Left backs and strikers though are things you hate to see leave. Good ones are hard to come by.

Bobby Reid, Knockaert and Cavaleiro 138 games combined for Fulham last season. 16 goals. Christ this league is awful.

In all seriousness though I do hope we get some good quality loans from PL clubs in the next couple of weeks. A couple of experienced but out of favour players like Drinkwater (I think he's crap but could probably do a job) and some exciting young players like Smith-Rowe or James Garner. Not necessarily those specific players but I hope we're fishing in those types of ponds.

We need money. The players that are worth money unfortunately happen to be the ones we'd most like to keep. Of those left, a good chunk of them have no ambition or intention of playing in the Championship and will quite happily turn in rancid non-performances until they're dropped if picked against their will. There is no upside where we can appeal to their better nature or ask them nicely to do the job we pay them for. They won't do it and it appears Ivic is sensible enough to not even attempt it.

Don't forget a few days ago it was confirmed the Premier League is going to ask us to pay back over £9m of tv money for last season. These are unprecedented times and rough choices are going to have to be made to secure the future of the club. At the very least - and I think even this is an optimistic view - we need to sell to buy.

However, before making those signings Fulham also kept players like Mitrovic and Tom Cariney who are not just quality championship players but are good PL quality players.

The only player close to the level of ability of those two who played against Boro was Foster.

Drinkwater is the perfect combination of utterly ****, totally unprofessional and on staggeringly large wages.

There is clearly something going on with the bloke, which I do feel sorry about, but I am struggling to think of a worse signing we could make to be honest.

That's irrelevant to my original point.

My point was Fulham didn't 'keep the bulk' of their squad. That's all.

He should’ve walked when they said they would only offer him a year if you ask me. I genuinely mean that.

    GoingDown "The Stability"

Perhaps. But it does show a statement of intent to do what Fulham did. Cut the 'mercenaries', kept their best player and signed seasoned experienced players to help them go up.

I don't think you cite Fulham as an example of another club who had to follow the same path as us but got promotion without showing that they did the right business off the back of that.

I don't think Toby Stevenson and someone like Sam Hutchinson is really going to result in promotion like it did for Fulham.

Agreed, and if our transfer business extends to those sort of players, then I agree it is very unlikely we go up (despite how poor the league looks).

I'd be surprised if we don't pick up a couple of loans for PL clubs, hopefully with a younger age profile than Murray...

I definitely think we will look at the loan market more than we have done previously. Perica and Sierralta signing permanently is testament to that as we can only have 5 loanees in a match day 18.

Well i've mainly seen Cristiano Giaretta when its come to the training and match days - But true he could lurking around somewhere.

If he is now a chief scout, wouldn't he be away from the players more?

Ivic only wanted a two-year deal. They both compromised to one-year and an option of a second

Still, it’s not a huge sign of faith is it? That’s my concern and has been from the day he was announced.

I think we’re putting more faith in Ivic than we have in any coach since Mazzarri, personally. We’re actively trying to recruit players that fit what he wants rather than what the club want. The statement from SD earlier as well regarding the sale of Estupinan. Granted it’s just words, but there’s definitely signs that Ivic is having more input than previous head coaches. We can only judge after the window has ended

Yes, was just the first name that popped in my head when thinking of experienced players who won't be close to the first team at PL clubs.

I'm not a fan of selling our best players but we got relegated so needs must unfortunately. We could not sell players and keep everybody on very high wages who don't want to play here and in a years time be in a far worse position. I still believe we won't end up selling all those that keep being mentioned but we will only know in a few weeks. Difficult to compare this season with previous ones as teams have less money, no match day income, very short pre season, covid hanging over everybody. We have to be careful in case we get a large surge in Covid cases and the season gets halted.
I'll be very surprised if Ivic didn't realise that after relegation we would have to cut our wage bill and some of the better players would be sold. It's fairly obvious
In regard to Pervis, he clearly wanted to return to Spain and I very much doubt after the season he had last season, he wanted to be playing at a lower level. That's life and you can't blame the player who has loftier ambitions than ours currently

Great business would have been to keep him last season and play him. He might have wanted to stay then. Instead we loaned him out, played inferior players in his position and got relegated.

Antonee Robinson was someone we looked at but Fulham are paying him 50K a week. Ryan Manning at QPR is also on the list as an Estupinan replacement, how far up I don’t know. Busquets is definitely a target, but I think if that’s happens it’ll be towards the end of the window

Oh I can kinda see that much at least - but I hope we aren’t tying one hand behind his back. And I can’t escape the fact that even a year longer on his deal would send a broader message.

I’ve no doubt we are looking to recruit. But there are worries about the pool we are fishing in and they HAVE to get it right. Another sketchy window and the stated target for this season will be a long way off. I don’t have any doubts that Ivic will know exactly what he wants - and I don’t have any doubts that the recruitment team and owner have that information - I just don’t have much faith in them attaining the players he wants. Or that they won’t just buy who they want.

The last time I remember a coach speaking so openly about what he needs was Silva. And the club sat on their hands until it was too late and delivered Wague and Zeegelaar.

Given that so far it doesn't seem that Ivic views Ken as a LWB, it seems mad we have allowed ourselves into a position where we do not have a single fit option in a position that is so important to his system.

It surely can't have come as a surprise to the club that Holebas was going to be released.

Thanks for sharing. All three would clearly improve (or would have improved) our squad. Definitely where we should be looking. Busquets would probably rather stay in Spain and Barca would presumably sell outright. So we're probably a last resort but also the most interested party.

With Manning, obviously it depends on who else is on our list and how good and available they are, but I'd try and get that sorted ASAP in case he agrees a new contract or someone else comes in for him. Giannoulis (whether he is on the list or not) is probably beyond us now both with PAOK having a decent shot at qualifying for the Champions League after beating Benfica and Atalanta supposedly very interested.

I have the same reservations RE bringing in players. Estupinan now being sold means we can start to spend money - I know some players we’re looking at are from Prem clubs. West Ham specifically (Josh Cullen & Nathan Holland) those are the types of players we’re looking to sign. Players with football league experience but have the potential to thrive in the Premier League should we go up, as well as overseas players with the same kind of potential (Busquets)

Josh Cullen would be good. Don't know if West Ham will want to part with him but he's 24 so needs to be playing and only a year left on his contract. Comes up very well on various statistical measures with Charlton and a lot of scope to improve too. Holland looks decent but I wouldn't want him to be our Sarr replacement, should he leave.

  32. Not a lot of difference these days. And come January, if the payments are staggered, we'll probably be grateful that the deal was done in Euros.

Uff that injury time goal at Villa Park gets more costly by the day.

They get to keep Grealish and sign the likes of Martínez and Watkins.

We get to sell most of our real assets and end up with Udinese cast offs and players released by Charlton.

Chicken and egg though isn't it? He's only the player he is now because we loaned him out. There's zero guarantee he'd have been as successful in our team of cloggers. And that's without the wildcard of knowing if he was even able to get work permit/had a Spanish passport last summer.
