As a "family club" a player putting ihis families health first should not beheld against a player, especially when the Club CEO was also raising concerns about the risks.
If i recall deeney was not the only player to delay their return.
People also seem to forget , the Gray birthday bash ,which broke the covid restrictions , could have possibly caused some of the unrest in the squad and potentially resulted in the loss of our premiership status.
But now he has scored a penalty and Quina has had one good game all is forgotten.
Its about time we looked forward, support any players who are in the squad, and start what's going to be a slow and painfulhopefully rebuild

But Troy could’ve put his family first by not being with them but doing his job as a very very well paid Captain of an EPL club.
    It wasn’t an either/or decision.

Many NHS workers did the same, not seeing their families but still being dedicated by working.
And they don’t get paid £60k per year, let alone per week.

    Pathetic reply!
You are really scraping the barrel ,to compare the front line NHS with a footballer reluctant to train.
Saving life's or kicking a football ,no contest.
Putting people at risk by flouting quarantine restrictions is more relevant, but as i said those players are now flavour of the week .

  9. Sahorn

    Sahorn Reservist

We’re talking about the club captain - not other players, so what they did is irrelevant.

What do you mean ‘scraping the barrel’?
I’m not talking about their jobs. I’m talking about their reaction to working AND protecting their family.
It is very relevant when both workers can protect their own family by keeping away from them while working.
Many NHS workers did this and continued to work.
Troy was not exposed to the risks that NHS workers were. Players were constantly tested and kept in bubbles. Yet he decided not to temporarily stay away from his family to help his team.

He could have, but no, he didn’t. For that decision he lost some of my respect.

You think my reply is pathetic.
    Thankyou!
I think it is well reasoned.

What did you think of Pearson questioning the start of the season and even Gino's dad got involved?

We clearly didn't really think it was right to start as a whole.

I got the impression his son was ill with breathing issues rather than he was worried about getting Covid as kids are pretty immune with it.

As it was he came back to training pretty much a few days after others.

IIRC he said he was worried about his child getting COVID as he'd be more vulnerable with complications (don't believe kids are 'immune', merely asymptomatic most of the time). I don't hold it against him coming back late, I don't think it made much difference, ironically probably his best game of the restart was that first game against Leicester (though that's probably a measure of how bad Leicester were post-restart than a measure of Deeney's quality these days!)

If it’s me you’re asking, I believe overall WFC, management, coach and many players wanted the season declared null and void or ended as the table stood because it meant we stayed up.

Didn’t Pearson have his father staying with him at home and he was concerned for his health and catching covid?
My comments for Deeney also apply to Pearson. He could stay away from home temporarily. In the event I believe his father moved back to his own home?

I think Deeney was concerned with his daughter’s health and catching covid.
I also believe he felt other players would follow his lead with mass downing of tools and not return to training.

He was wrong and the rest of the team were training without him.
Because games were to restart without him he then miraculously had a change of heart and returned to work.

Troy mentioned something vague about his baby having breathing difficulties at birth, although all the articles around the birth suggest the baby was home within 24 hours of birth. There is a big difference between having some difficulties at birth and actually having an ongoing underlying condition, of which there is no evidence Troy’s baby has. Obviously that’s his and his families business, but on the balance of probabilities I’m willing to guess Troy mentioned something deliberately vague about his babies health that couldn’t be proven it disproven, the rest of the league ignored him/didn’t care so he miraculously got over his concerns.

Well according to R4 Spurs have to make a 'tough' 'decison': Deeney or Bale.

  17. If Troy didn’t feel safe to return that was his right to choose not to.

He may have a runaway ego off the pitch, and he may have lost whatever little pace he had on it, but not everything in his life deserves to be dissected.

I used to find it amusing that one of colleagues really had a 'thing' about her (posters of her in the office and in the lab) and he would become enraged when one the clinicians used to refer to her as "little nose"...

We obviously didn’t want a season to finish whilst we were precariously outside the drop Zone and there remained a real chance that our awful campaign would be written off, or the three teams below us relegated via some sort of Duckworth Lewis method.

I doubt player safety came into it, but even if it did, as has been mentioned, Deeney had easy and viable options open to Him that would have allowed him to protect his family and honour his role as club captain.

But people didn't want him to play anyway. But then complained when he didn't want to. But then complained when he did.

I agree. I also think he saw it as another opportunity to get in the media. If he had a genuine concern he could have worked with the club to keep it quiet and in-house, rather than splash it all over the media and demonstrating our lack of unity. As it happens, it backfired, as everyone else just carried on without him. But as Club Captain, he should have set a better example and, in my view, the lack of unity and loyalty he showed at that time is more potentially damaging to our fight against relegation, than the questionable loss of him not appearing on the football pitch as he was pretty useless anyway.

And I don't care that it was a few months ago. He demonstrated that he doesn't give a monkey's for Watford back then in our hour of need, why should he be any different now? I won't be fooled if he doesn't get his offer to the prem and he comes back thumping the Watford FC badge on his shirt for effect.

That can be explained thus. We didn’t want him to play because he is crap, but given that he played anyway, the very least he could have done was be fit.

As it transpired, he was injured so someone should have ruled him out.

He’s got a role and responsibility that comes with it. He didn’t carry it well. I’m certainly not hoping he plays for us again.

So everyone else was allowed to moan and groan (express doubts ) but not Deeney ?

Mind you guess Gray ,Chalobah and Quina weren't that bothered about player safety etc given their lockdown party.

Now those idiots really did show a lack of unity and understanding.

And got nothing more than a slap on tbf wrist.

Maybe had he behaved Gray could have replaced Deeney .. but he'd rather have a party.

They really did make the club look silly if their were genuine concerns about re starting.

But I am inclined to agree it would have worked in our favour to end the season.

When this was pointed out by other fans on Twitter etc they got a load of stick though.

So you weren't one of the many fans on Twitter etc agreeing with him about the season starting I guess..

That is ok - so all those Liverpool, Leeds fans etc were right?

He and others were just doung it for effect and only trying to get the season cancelled as it benefited us.

I quite agree many a people in such situations have just got on with working taking risks and no other players from other teams publicly aired their views.

Just seems harsh to blame Deeney alone when Pearson , Duxbury etc were all questioning the re start.

We all wanted the season scrapped because it was our best chance of staying up, funnily enough those who had something to lose (all the clubs who couldn’t be relegated) wanted to play because they would’ve lost money through not restarting. DSR the Burnley fan was on here enough saying as much.

The club and Troy were no different, scrapping the season was our best chance of staying up and history has proven that spectacularly.

It still doesn’t mean Troy wasn’t making suff up to try and engineer that either, and people can still take issue with that.

Still find it funny that he has pimped himself out to every Tom **** and Harry, yet no-one wants him. Bugged himself up in the media, compared himself to players better than him, and hasn’t spoken positively once since the new season started.

Think we will be stuck with him. Although I’m hoping for a deadline day surprise with some bottom half Prem team desperate to sign him.
