And he’ll have left as and when he signs for someone else, as of now he hasn’t.

Come on Nath, I can back you up at times but you need to meet me halfway here! ;)

Really reaching there mate. My post was a fair assessment about individual performances on the night, with no wider assumptions, positive or negative, about the season as a whole because I, and most others, realise that performances and results in the early rounds of this competition mean very very little.

The point, which seemingly went over your head is that there's very little point getting too upset about games like this, because as we saw with the Doncaster game, they don't tend to have any effect whatsoever on the season.

We've got to be start playing the better players though and get rid of the players that shouldn't really be on the books. Do you know how much money we're paying these players? They are getting a fortune every week, yet we're not even including them in the squad.

I know Sinclair played well tonight, but that's his level. League One opposition. Sierralta waste of time signing him. Perica maybe one to have as a punt, but certainly not a first team regular but I get the feeling he will be considered as this. Murray again is a decent backup option, but shouldn't be a first team regular. Stevenson.....seriously.....lol. What a ridiculous signing. He doesn't have the attributes of being a fast wing back. None of these signings have impressed me one little bit and shows a complete lack of ambition.

Navarro, why are we still considering him as a viable option? Although I wish no ill on him, it's a blessing he's injured now.

Midfield is far too lightweight, and it was the same against Boro. Quina looked great against Spurs, and I think he's someone who plays better against high level teams. Against these lower clubs, he's not really been able to shine. He was our one big hope, but it looks like he could struggle as a Championship player against the physicality of the league. Chalobah I'm sad to say seems like he's really lost it as a player, and probably be one who needs to move on.

Oh....and Perica will be credited for an assist, but it was a miskick right in front of goal which luckily for us squirmed its way to Sema to fire in.

It's all very well selling all these quality players we have sold for under their true value, but it will be extremely difficult to sign good quality to replace them at the price we think they are worth. No one will sell any of those players you've listed for the price you're mentioning. Way undervalued.

I just don't see the end goal here, apart from making money. Incoming transfers are poor and once that gets recognised, no decent players are going to sign for us. Our only hope to do well this season was to keep as many Premier League players as possible, not sell them all.

Still no sign of Sarr, not even mentioned in press conferences. If we lose Sarr and Suarez, the forwards we have left are not good enough to get us up IMO. The bare minimum we need to keep are Hughes, Sarr, Suarez and Foster plus one more Grimes type midfielder. If we sell all the others, plus some of those players too, then we've really been led down the garden path and will not be anywhere near the promotion spots.

    Yeah, that's fair enough.

I do find it strange how negative the forum has been for the last few weeks considering the facts are we've played 2, won 2(kinda) and only sold 1 first team player. Obviously there are caveats to this and everything isn't hunky-dory but for a club just relegated, with a new head coach, in a bit of financial worry, I think things aren't too bad, considering.

No point in your opinion, and "don't tend to have an affect" based on another game/result from 6 years ago. OK then.

Again, how dare anyone have an opinion for what it might mean for the bigger picture and the current state of our squad and how dare anyone not just write off results and performances that WatfordTalk says don't matter.

HB1 I think you may be getting a bit worked up over the Stevenson signing. Put him in the pile with Hungbo, Randell Williams etc. A young player to fill out the squad with the u23s, his 'announcement' even confirmed this. But as with all academy players, if he can play well for the u23s and take his chances if they come along in cup games like he seemed to tonight, then it's a nice bonus. If not hopefully we can get a loan fee or two over the next couple of years.

I think it’s human nature to react to things in different ways. I have no problem with the negativity or the positivity and think it would be better if everyone was allowed to display how they feel without being marginalised for it personally. Banter is fine as that’s what happens on here but the rest of it is silly really.

Sadly it’s going to take some more time than others to put last season behind them and that will likely filter into their early opinions on everything that happens in the immediate future. I can be honest enough to include myself in that group of fans.

For my point of view, I said from the moment we went down that all goodwill I had towards those running the club had gone and it would take only actions and time for it to rebuild - words and vague statements mean nothing at this point. If you’re going to make a statement, be transparent and leave little to interpretation. Anyone who wasn’t part of last season or showed their best to get us out of that mess (Ivic, Sarr, etc) will get good grace from me as it’s deserved. But others not so much.

Okay we'll go back to last season where we beat Coventry 3-0 and Swansea 2-1 in the 3rd round. Again, meant nothing.

One thing I meant to write about Dan Phillips which, to me, shows he's learning, coping and improving with being around the first team since I first saw him the season before last is his mental discipline.

That was his first 90 minutes for Watford in a game where he had to work without the ball for long periods. That is energy sapping. But as he tired both mentally and physically he still concentrated enough not to go diving into reckless challenges as the game went on. I thought that showed a good level of maturity.

My one fear has been he'll try to impose himself on the opposition and while I'll concede he left his mark on one Oxford player early, he seems to be controlling the aggressive side to his tackling so far. I think that tackle where he started a bit of a melee against Scunthorpe in the first friendly has taught him and hopefully been coached into him that you can't go launching yourself into tackles. Stay on your feet if the tackle isn't there, intercept when you can and keep your position.

Hopefully, with more minutes in the first team as the season unfurls, he'll show the more creative side to his game because he knows how to pick a pass around the opposition area. Be patient with him because he will make mistakes but there's a player in there alright.

The players being picked are way under the level we need them to be at. The performances have been pretty poor too. If you're only basing things on results, yes, results have been acceptable, but you have to recognise the fortune involved in getting these wins. The performances have not merited two victories.

Maybe Ivic is a good manager, but he certainly seems to be a lucky one too......and long may that last. But you cannot keep picking sides so low on quality, no matter how good their attitude is, and expect to win the volume of matches required for promotion. It just won't happen.

Don’t disagree with the first statement. We do need to start playing Suarez and Sarr. Hughes when he’s back. Agree 100%. These players should be told, we pay your wages, your contracted to us. If you refuse to play then we will simply fine your wages until you do. A stand does have to be made.

My guess is the board are trying to sell the likes of Doucoure, Foulquier, Deeney, Capoue, Estupinan, Pereyra, Welbeck and Deulofeu, to generate enough money to spend reinforcing the squad while also significantly cutting the wage bill. This will allow us to keep Sarr, Suarez and Hughes which I personally believe is the goal.

Perica wasn’t the one who miskicked it, that was wonder boy Pedro. Perica did all the hard work heading the ball back into play. Pedro miskicked it and it fell to Sema.

So again, because you've decided tonight is irrelevant people like myself aren't allowed to have an opinion on it outside of "it means nothing"?

You think it means nothing, I think there's things to take from it that are relevant to the bigger picture.

Okay fair enough. Looking at the evidence of pretty much every team every team ever, including us, you'll be proven wrong, again, but fair enough.

  14. If you can’t explain yourself properly it’s no ones fault but your own.

if pre season games are irrelevant, and you can add league cup games in there as well, why do people like you get all depressed about them? They must mean more to you than you will admit.

What you should have said is he will never play a league or cup game for us.

Was it more Sema replacing Chalobah the difference or was it just Chalobah being hoiked the difference i.e was Chalobah the problem, because Sema and Chalobah are not similar players?

Sorry, I foolishly thought that it was just common sense to realise that friendlies, which don't count as official appearances for any player whatsoever, weren't relevant when talking about someone having played for the club or not.

Vlad might have the magic touch because we were absolutely turgid there for most of the game but somehow still got through.

    Positives:

Bachmann - say no more, other than came off his line for every penalty and then had a laugh with the linesman who just let him do it!
Pedro - just wants it and is positive. His will to win shines through and he's already becoming a leader by example.
Sema - not just the goal and workrate but another outstanding corner. Essential to keep him.
Perica - knows how to attack the ball from crosses even though he looked very limited in open play
Ivic - decided he wanted to win the game and brought subs on that did just that. Rolled the dice early with the third but after a few managers that waited too long, good to see decisive action
Sinclair - a willing runner, couple of decent turns. Best overall display he's had for us by some distance.

    Negatives:

Don't think any of the academy players look close to being ready. Phillips is a walking red card with his poor first touch, dive in to a tackle combination. Good application from all of them though.

The three first team players from the weekend were probably the worst players out there. Chalobah, Quina and Wilmot all appalling in possession. 17 year old Chalobah would've run that game, post injury version still looks scared and immobile.

Navarro looked really dreadful and adds to our injury list. Thought Sierralta was poor for the most part but seemed to step up when we went down to ten and seemed to at least want to win so gets a pass.

Oh and we really need to sign a replacement for Capoue if he's off. Someone that will sit there protecting the defence, is physically strong and battle hardened. Obviously if they can play a bit too great but we need a Ben Watson type to get us out of this division.

Which would be alot easier if someone actually wanted to buy them. And its not helped by there being far more players than we thought suddenly thinking their too good for the club they helped relegate and now want to jump ship.

As usual, SLB has offered insightful points based on the game, without making apocalyptic assumptions about the season. You have, as usual, offered nothing apart from sarcastic comments ("will never play for us" - hilarious and definitely not a joke beaten to death), and kicker-wetting.

I genuinely can't remember the last time you've made a decent contribution which is a huge shame because when you want to you can make some excellent articulate points. Nowadays, you'll hop on a thread, post a moaning, sarcastic comment or a thinly veiled dig. And you're more than entitled to do that, it's just a bit of a shame.

Ken Sema is the season saviour it seems...?

Shortest possible penalty shoot out and then Palace meet Bournemouth for the chance to play Man City. Penalties go to 10-10. Neither keeper bothered to try amd save one... Then the Palace keeper saves Bournemouth keepers pen and can score to win the tie... But skies it over the bar!

Bloody hell, this forum is a tough read.

I’ve sat back largely for a long while now, but it seems that; You’re either a happy clapper to the ends of the earth if you dare be positive about any aspect of the club, or you’re a bed wetter if you’re critical about Gino/The club in any particular way.

The world is a horrible and **** place at the moment, with left and right arguing over any little discussion point with no middle ground being taken/given, let alone for the same thing to happen on a football forum. I think some people need to look at their perspective and outlook on things, whether Watford FC related or not, and be a bit more measured either way.

One league cup tie does not mean the club is being thrown down a river, nor does one 1-0 win over Boro mean we’re gonna walk the league. It’s possible to look at things in isolation and quite simply say: This was a positive, this was a positive, however I’ve got concerns over A, B and C coming out of this, or vice-versa. Genuinely feels like those basics have been forgotten by people.

Either way, do what you want, I’ll just sift quietly away for now.

I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think we are in a position to give Ivi* anywhere near 20/30 million to spend. I think it will be £5m after all the dust settles and only then if as you say we can wrap up business quickly.

Yeah and Deeney is really supportive of the club and can’t wait to play for us again

the good thing about that play was that we had 3 players in the box, we got a decent cross from the left and Perica header was perfect (compared to some players’ we’ve had in the past)

I tend to agree, shifting the “ want always “ is a much as getting money in for them as well as saving their Premiership wages, although we believe some will have agreed wage reductions allegedly 50% what remains will still be quite high for the championship!

We aren’t the first P.L. team to get relegated and be forced to save costs, however it appears that the club borrowed against future income that will now not be received! Drastic action is required and unfortunately we aren’t masters of our own destiny (we were at the start of the 9 games after lockdown) the less said about those games the better, but we are now paying dearly for them!

we have exactly one month left until we know what players we have until January and then the speculation will be rife, this season I’m afraid looks as if it going to be one big inventory check to keep WFC here for the long term! We the onlookers can do no more than see how it pans out, it’s never dull is it!

Yep. It's total fantasy land. We'll need to be dipping into the loan market for promising youngsters or experienced Championship heads. Players like Gueds and Connolly weren't Premier League players but they did the job for us. We got Watson on a free last time around, this is the kind of business we need to be doing.

Also worth remembering that we didn't get a single non-Pozzo player in for a fee in the three seasons in the Championship last time around.
