If the bonuses were due they would have been able to enforce them.

I don't think it is intentional.

These are the people that thought that Dawson was the answer to our defensive problems and spent our entire transfer budget on a winger when we had a manager who played a system which didn't really use wingers.

Yeah, check the Dawson transfer thread. It's hilarious how many people thought that was job done.

I thought he was an okay signing if he came in as back up and we were bringing in an actual centre back.

Gino and Giraldi clearly thought otherwise.

"Normally we have Andre Gray who got injured in the last friendly. He's one of the options and a quality player, we have [Glenn] Murray, who has arrived, we have [Stipe] Perica, we have [Luis] Suarez, he's with us. In this situation, the team, with all this choice, is complete, but we have in the other positions some deficits that means we need to move for some other positions."

Quote from Ivic's press conference today (which largely focused on Deeney's departure supposedly). https://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/18719615.troy-deeney-expected-training-watford-soon/

Sounds like he views Gray, Murray, Perica and Suarez as his four out and out striker options for the season, unless something changes (like the arrival of a big offer for the latter). Doesn't even mention Welbeck - presumably off with Deeney. Refers to deficits in other positions (presumably LCB and CM, maybe LB/LWB too) where he's expecting incomings.

I can just imagine the outcry on here if Suarez actually stays and ends up being sh*te. All the people getting outraged about about him leaving will suddenly be outraged that we kept an average striker who we could have sold for £15m.

From memory, there was a clause in the bonus agreement that meant the club had final say as to whether the bonus should be paid regardless of whether objectives had been met. The players claimed they weren't aware of the clause and if they had known about it would not have agreed to it. The club then decided not to pay the full amount despite reaching the cup final and having a successful season, which the players believed met the objectives set out for bonus qualification. It's a while since I read the article though.

"As of yet, it is believed that only tentative interest has been registered from the likes of West Bromwich Albion, who are understood to have Andre Gray higher up their list of priorities, and Tottenham, who view Deeney as a back up option."

    Unless WBA go for Gray?

Thanks - not sure how the players can not be aware of a clause in THEIR bonus plan tho ?

Yeah I'd imagine Gray will be off if the deal satisfies our valuation. I'm guessing we'd much rather shift Deeney not just because of age and finances, but I think it will be harder to build a different team under different leadership and with a different main striker (Suarez or Gray) with Deeney around and his influence looming over the side. I thought the paragraph I shared was revealing as it demonstrated what Ivic thinks our striking options are going to look like come the start of the season, but maybe I'm reading too much into it.

That’s an over simplification. These things are rarely as black or white as that.

Well the people who disagreed were obviously wrong because otherwise they’d own a football club instead of just writing about it on a forum.

Suarez's agent has chimed in this morning: “I saw that there are a lot of things that have come out, but I can tell you that there is nothing concrete with OM. On the other hand, there are many interests in Spain (Valencia and Atlético de Madrid on the spot, editor's note). But the player remains focused on Watford for now even though his side have moved down to the Second Division."

So, for all the discussion here, it's maybe notable that Ivic doesn't deny Deeney and Estupinan may be on the way out, yet counts Suarez amongst his strikers:

I'm led to believe that it's fairly active from both sides - But no idea who else other than Spurs and WBA are interested.

I'd take it all with a pinch of salt, as I'm not sure how much he actually knows. Straight after the Boro match he said Estupinan had a little knock so decided against using him. He said that he would be back with the team quickly. Soon after it was clear Estupinan was going to Villarreal and he obviously knew nothing about it. So, right now, I don't take too much comfort that he's saying that Suarez will be part of things.

I'm sure in a few weeks he'll become totally disillusioned with the player trading, when his entire team is taken away from him.

Don't you see what's happening? Gino is selling anyone good so Vlad is pretending.

    Gray to Marseille confirmed.

Today he spoke very clearly about the interest in Estupinan and Deeney. And highlights that once an offer is received he is involved in any decisions. I think he knows a fair amount. I think that he is by default as opaque with the media as the club is. Look at his answer to which positions we're seeking to bringing in.

Hopefully Vlad does the sensible thing and sells Suraez and Sarr so that we can extend the contracts of Gray and a Deeney. It s a no-brainer

For us, yes, it's early October, but the Premier League have an extra 11 days to scavenge for signings. Hopefully it's the likes of Welbeck that leave in that window and not Sarr!

If that comes off, it would be incredible, Grant is probably more guaranteed to be a success at this level than Suarez, but I doubt we get that much for Suarez, I doubt Grant would want to come here when Premier League clubs have been interested, and I doubt we'd spunk £16m in the situation we're in

Agree with this. For all his quality, Welbeck's end product isn't great. Certainly no guarantees that he would tear it up at this level.
