Fake punt in your own half to give them the ball and all momentum.

Use a time-out and then punt on 4th and 1 in the opposition half when you’re down 17.

Ladies and gentleman, welcome to the world according to Bill O’Brien.

Head Coach Bill O’Brien is likely going to have a very awkward conversation with GM Bill O’Brien tomorrow morning.

With the other MLS thread closed, figured i'd just make this the omnibus American sports thread. Season tickets finally came in today, Club just announced all games will stream for free on their website, going to be a good season.

Somewhat related Premier League Fan Fast coming to philly this spring, not entirely sure what it is, but should be interesting to see if any other localish watford fans come out of the woodwork

A question no one has been able to answer, everywhere in the world when there is a team sport it is advertised as "Home Team v Away Team" in the media and in the betting world. But in the US it's advertised as "Away Team @ Home Team", why is that?

As a Bill's fan, this year is crucial. AFC East up for grabs finally and need to win it to have some kind of progress. I'd also go as far as to say this is a make-or-break year for Josh Allen, who I love. I'm quietly confident about them.

It's just a convention either way - nothing deliberate. I have no idea why it should have grown up like that. It's similar to people's names in western countries being Personal Name followed by Family Name, whereas in the east it's the other way round.

So Brady takes Tampa bay to the super bowl.

How often do you see that in the NFL? A team releasing a dynasty QB and they go on to do bigger or just as big things.

Reminds me a bit of the Pozzo mistakes thread and the point about selling Troy when we had the chance.

Obviously the franchising system will often force an NFL clubs hand, but to move forward you sometimes have to move temporarily backwards, before you start to move backwards anyway by holding on to a talented player too long. To get the next big QB you often have to let the current one go.

    Hmmm, surely the GOAT now?

Pats have their first losing season in 20 years and Brady takes Tampa to their first super bowl since 2007, winning three on the road in the process, all at the age of 43.

Watched most of the game last night until I couldn't keep my eyes open. Really enjoyed everything about it, including the commentary team. I can't help but think if it wasn't for the ridiculously long breaks between plays it would be hugely popular, but the breaks are just bonkers. Surely someone with half a brain can work out that less breaks = more popular sport = billions more viewers = more revenue from ads between quarters? It's just f***ing crazy. It's the reason I'll only watch games from playoffs onwards.

Been to a few of the London games and the breaks are even more bizarre when you’re at the game, as everything just stops for no apparent reason but it’s just for a TV ad break.

It's easily his best achievement, but I still think Rodgers/Brees/Manning would have achieved just as much as Brady has in his career if they had had his coaches and team mates.

Redzone on Sunday nights is great during the regular season. No adverts at all for 7 hours and they switch between every game that is going on at the same time - so you are never watching one in a TV timeout etc.

  30. So I've been watching a bit of NFL over the past few weeks through sheer boredom. Conversation on this topic is surprisingly low on this sub btw.

Anyway, I've come to the conclusion it's either massively fixed or NFL players are just really really stupid.

Some of the fouls are so amateur and unnecessary. Grabbing masks, pass interference or holding when the other team are 3rd and 15 or something.

Spacial awareness and tackling us awful. Rugby players would be embarrassed with the amount of flying in and missed tackles that happen.

Turnarounds in scores due to errors and basic lack of awareness is comical and game management is dire for most teams.

It's entertaining as a bit of a filler but it seems so bad.

PI and holding fouls are usually born out of necessity though. You're going to give up a big play anyway so might as well make the foul and hope you get away with it (see Saints-Rams NFC champ game a few years ago). Facemasks are usually accidental as well.

Some NFL players are incredibly stupid on the taunting though. Such a ridiculous thing to give up 15 yards for.

The problem with taunting is it is widely subjective and really depends on how the ref feels about the rule. Holding is almost the same, there is some blatant holds, but a common saying is there is holding on every play, it just depends on if the ref sees it. I think the NFL lends itself to the most subjective penalty calling, which can always lead to some issues.

Would you not say a fundamental difference between Rugby and NFL is that Rugby you can’t pass forward and in NFL the aim is almost the direct opposite, to get the ball to go in a forward direction as quick as possible? Passages of play in rugby can last several minutes and are slow in nature as teams gradually move up field, so surely it’s easier to eventually land a decent tackle? Whereas in NFL a play can be over in a couple of seconds, with the ball moving far more quickly and directly up field, so you only have a finite window to make a tackle or block and it’s often the difference between stopping a play and conceding a TD or a massive chunk of possession.

Conversely, putting defensive stuff aside, I would also say some of the offensive play and athleticism you see from many offensive players is superior to what you see in Rugby.

I hate Dan Snyder. Anyone hating on Gino Pozzo needs to research this clown and what he's done to a once glorious franchise to get perspective.
