Good move for him. Hopefully he actually gets some game time. League 1 will certainly toughen him up which is good for us. Will be very interested to see how he does.

That's unlike Hornet fans to write off a young player before he's even kicked a ball in the EFL. Top Marks

Good point. But if he'd been any good, he'd have already been poached while in youth poaching zone like Sancho and Sinclair

Here's my confusion. People on the site have said we shouldn't bother with a youth academy because any decent prospect would be poached by a big club. Here's Ryan Cassidy, a player thought of by the club as the next big thing and by the fans as a very decent prospect.

But he didn't get poached by a big club. So by their logic, he must be ****.

It just adds more evidence to the point that the fan view is that we shouldn't have a youth academy because the owners can't be arsed with one. Not because of this mythical 'every good prospect will join a big club' ********.

Or he's been advised to stay! Wrongly or rightly who knows. He's got a chance in league one to show everybody what he's all about.
    So good luck to him.

He is only 19 though! give the lad a chance! years ago we may have pushed 19 year olds into the first team ie Murray, Hand, Easton it doesn't always benefit them or us, maybe we are better now and our minimum requirement is higher!

Does it really matter how old they are if they're good enough?

With the outlay needed for a very good academy, not necessarily Category 1, just a very good academy, the current owners don't seem to see it as a viable option because, in my opinion, they see their expertise (stop laughing!) as being in the transfer market.

Despite being in the Premiership for 5 years our finances were still pretty tight. Setting up and maintaining a flourishing youth set up comes at a huge expense and, rightly or wrongly, we looked at getting then maintain EPL status by using the transfer market. There's no guarantee either method will work or is sustainable but it looks like the transfer market is our way of building a squad of players for now.

As for Cassidy, just because he wasn't picked up by a bigger club doesn't mean he must be ****. In fact you could say we poached him from St Kevins Boys Club because he was about 16 when he came to Watford.

Also, he is one of the better players in our youth ranks. That doesn't make him one of the best in the country though so maybe the very top clubs don't think he's good enough for them. But it doesn't mean he's ready to have the blue tarpaulin erected around his fledgling career in readiness to be thrown on the scrapheap. He's far from **** but he's not at the very top either. How he gets on at Accrington will give everyone an indication as to what his standard is right now though.

    Good post.

I'm looking forward to seeing how he does. Their manager, an ex striker must of seen something in him and will no doubt push him on.

Agree with this. And there is a difference between not believing there is any value in young prospects and not believing it is worth investing to gain Category 1 or 2 Academy status.

If we believe that good young players can be persuaded to stay and sign with us without having an academy, and can supplement those players with top talent from further afield identified by the scouting network (Richarlison, João Pedro), why would you bother?

The Pozzos arrived in 2012. How many wfc youth players developed under their 8 year watch have gone on to become a first 11 player or earned us a sizeable fee? I guess that's my point. Maybe Cassidy will be the first or maybe he'll just be the next Folovi or Jakubiak off the rank ?

We could have had an amazing front 3 of Folivi, Cassidy and Jakubiak. The fact we haven’t is why I will always shut down those who tell me to ‘Trust in Gino’.

Ryan Cassidy starts for Accrington Stanley against Salford City at 3pm.
    It's a pre-season friendly.

The game is live on YouTube

Started watching but don’t think he’s touched the ball yet. Are Salford still League Two? Because they look better than Accrington this afternoon.

Yes but guess they have a strong squad with the Class of 92 money whilst Accrington do punch above their weight.

Cassidy just scored a penalty for Accrington vs Salford City. Smashed into the top right corner.

The same mastermind is probably going to stiff Valencia for a 4m euro loan fee for Capoue. Football business pozzo model network.

He teaches at Aldenham school (head of house and PE I think), once scored 5 goals past me in a game. Was way better than Tom Smith at youth level, should have made it, lightening quick.
