We've supposedly opened talks with Fulham for the 26-year old centre-back. Injury ravaged so will be perfect. https://www.footballinsider247.com/...to-sign-fulham-player-signed-for-20m-in-2018/
Hes **** and has been for a while Bizarrely rated by some people because hes English and scored a few goals from corners 5 years ago Every time we've played against him hes been awful as well. Gifted Richarlison the winner at Swansea away, gifted Capoue the winner when we played Swansea at home, got subbed at half time when we drew 1-1 with Fulham away etc. Horrible player
I'm assuming this will be just a loan, just to get his fitness back. Can't believe we'll actually look to sign him permanently as he'll be expensive and a big risk with his injury record. Personally I think he's ****, but will still be an upgrade on what we already have, even if he is injured.
Ahh, the yearly Alfie Mawson thread. Looking through the old ones, this one has a lot to live up to. One was heavily Fleetwood Mac influenced and the other seems to have been heavily changed by the mods but appears to have had a GD/HB1 pre-detente disagreement. Those were the days.
This has got to be sarcastic. In which case you have absolutely done me because I couldn’t resist. Well played! He is atrocious, not even close to upgrade on what we have. He would literally be the worst defender at the club. He is worse than Mapps. How he has made a career out of being a professional is as baffling as Titus Bramble doing it. This will be 100 steps backwards if we sign him. He’s crap!
Gonna stick my neck out here: Don’t get all the hate personally. 26 year old, left footed centre back who has a good passing range and is dominant in the air. Injuries obviously a huge concern and something that must be analysed. Yes Fulham overpaid, but there’s a reason he made the England squad several years ago and if he stayed fit (of course a big if) he would be an important player for us. I really do wonder (considering his injury issues and the fact that he’s fallen out of favour) how much Fulham would be seeking for him. £5-8m or so and he would be worth the risk in my opinion. Left-footed centre backs with premier league experience are exceedingly rare. I also hope this is indicative of the club recognising the need to sign a young centre back with domestic experience for a fair amount of money, rather than a Udinese loanee who needs playing time to inflate their value following several poor seasons (Sierrelta). EDIT: yes, I recall him playing badly against us. On multiple occasions. But I don’t really believe players linked should be judged (either favourably or unfavourably) based on performances against us as it’s such a limited data set.
I think it's just the fact he wasn't very good against us , was in a very leaky Fulham defence and is injured. Cannot be surprised if there are doubts.
Noooo!! Funnily enough, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some truth in this, as our new scouting and analysis guy Miguel Rios who we signed last week was Head of Academy Recruitment at Brentford when Mawson was in the Academy there - so if he comes it could well be at Rios' recommendation.
Never ever seen him be anything other than total dog**** that costs his team. Rather play with 10 men.
There are doubts, some of which I share, and then there are responses here describing him as “atrocious” or merely exclaiming “nooooo.” A bit over the top, in my opinion.
Of course - any new singings ought to be given a chance. And well if he signs he can prove a few people wrong I guess.
I apologise for quoting your reaction, which may have been sarcastic and was part of a post that was far more informed and level headed than most of the reactions on here. There was a “No No No” I could have cited instead!
So this morning’s angst was that it seemed we were signing defenders on the cheap from our sister club. This afternoon’s angst is that we’ve now moved on from that to look at a defender with plenty of experience in both the PL and the Championship. I wonder what this evening will bring lol. I think Mawson has the potential to fit nicely into Ivic’s system and philosophy, and I’m counting Wilmot as the equivalent of a new signing too for this season. A Wilmot-Mawson pairing could be quite ok for the Championship campaign, with Dawson and Cathcart as back up should Mawson’s injury curse strike again.
That pairing would be hilarious. Both can play the ball out from the back, true, and would cost us about 1.57 goals a game I should imagine.
