He probably wouldn't. He might come off the bench instead of Long, or maybe rotate with Redmond I guess.

If his performance levels stay the same as they were for us I'm not convinced he should be a regular starter for any PL club. As per my previous post, I think he's a decent squad option, not more.

I'd imagine they wouldn't mind paying around 5m for a squad player. It's always going to be Ings and another, he's more than capable of being a starter for them.

I hope this is not true, I really want to keep him as I think his injury is behind him and he would be a great asset for our push to get back to the PL :(

If it's true he has a £5.5mil relegation release clause then there's not really anything we can do about it.

This is the one story, if true, that disappoints me. In my mind Welbeck owes us something, at least to stick around until January. He was out virtually all last season, we took care of him and got him back onto the pitch again. We've not really had our patience and hard work rewarded.

The revolving door is starting to get into full swing now it appears.

Lol Welbeck owes Watford absolutely nothing. It's Football and he's far too good for out tinpot Championship team.

If it's true he has a relegation clause as the article suggests, then the only thing owed is a transfer by the club for the player.
Unless we were to give him a bumper new contract then once we went down there was no way Welbeck was going to stay.

We now have Joao Pedro on the left with maybe Uncle Ken Sema if he stays. If he doesn't I'd presume someone else comes in.

The big earners are moving on and new players will replace some of those who leave. Personally I'm looking forward to seeing some players who weren't relegation fodder last season and who have something to prove rather than the seemingly unmotivated dross who seem to believe they belong in such exalted company as Andy Carroll in the Premier League.

I'm also excited by that first choice XI, but that will have to include Suarez and Sarr. Judging by the tweet Suarez's agent sent, it's highly unlikely he'll be with us, and to think Sarr will not get that big offer before the end of the window is an unlikely wish I'd say.

I like Welbeck and was happy to see him on a decent run for us after lockdown.

However, let’s be honest. Based on his injury record over the past few years, it has to be considered extremely unlikely he’d last the rigours of a full Championship season unscathed.

That’s not meant unkindly. It’s just fact. He will string a few games together, often impressively, then get another injury and disappear for weeks.

I’m sure we could replace him with another experienced, but less injury prone, forward to boost our squad.

I keep saying it but this season will be brutal. 46 matches in six weeks less than usual. 13 midweek fixtures. Having a good and fit and available squad is going to be more important than ever. The sides that do well this season won’t only be the quality ones but those who have the deepest squads and best injury records.

I agree, as much as I would have liked to have seen Welbeck in our team, it's not a given that he would have managed 46 games, I would reckon about half. My hope is that he's still around at the beginning of the season to score some and get us going but if as reported he has a £5.5m release clause it would be likely that he would be gone before kick off.

Exactly my thoughts to. Even with Suarez, it's a heavy burden to expect him to get through an entire 46 match season. Welbeck would have offered serious alternative quality to that position. I had him down for around 20 matches, but that's well worth the effort because he's that good.

To lose him for just £5.5m is a tragedy. You're unlikely to find that type of quality in the Championship for that type of money.....in fact I'd say it's impossible.

He's a very, very average top-flight footballer technically. He's British and works hard. That's then countered by his chronic injury problems.

£5.5m is low but if that's his clause and we don't even have a choice then what are we waiting for? Should be gone by Monday, trim the squad ASAP.

So you want Gray out the door at all costs but would wish Welbeck well, even though Gray has done far more in a Watford shirt?

I’d ideally like to keep Welbeck as he’s undoubtedly talented. But 25k-75k a week is just about maintainable in the PL for the amount of games you get from him - it’s a heck of a lot of money in the Championship and I think that will dictate a departure.

Is Welbeck likely to care about what he ‘owes’ Watford in the face of a return to top flight football? I doubt he’s grown attached to the club.

Of course not, but that's not the point. It won't change my opinion on that I feel he owes us.

It just feels like a very gloomy morning to log on and catch up with all the updates. Deulofeu says he’s leaving. Welbeck looks set to go. Suarez doesn’t seem to want to come. Doucoure likely to be off any day. Etc etc.

Welcome to life as a relegated club eh.

Whether we like it or not, the PL is the be all and end all, especially as far as the players are concerned. They’ve tasted it, they’ve earned the big bucks and I guess it’s natural they don’t fancy a season in the Championship out of the footballing limelight and earning less money.

As other people have said, it doesn’t always feel morally right that players who were responsible for our demise now want to jump ship and it leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. Would we have gone down had Doucouré played as well as he had done the season before, or had Deulofeu scored more than just a handful before his injury or had Welbeck scored more than twice in the run in or had Deeney contributed more than just the occasional goal scoring match as our main striker? I think we know the answer. So instead we fans are left with the after effects while the players saunter off into the sunset. Not good.

I am not sure why a player who has missed so many games due to injuries would be happy to go to a club and be 3rd or 4th choice.

You're cherry picking my posts. If you've read others you'd of seen Welbeck is the one I'd want to stay, moving on Gray and DeeKnee Instead. But if he wants to leave he has to be moved on. We can't afford to have unhappy players on lots of money causing unrest in the camp.
As for Gray yes you know my feelings on this bloke. The most expensive failure ever in the history of this club. To me offers zero to the club whatsoever.

Agreed. He is a good player, when fit. Also worth remembering his goalscoring record is pretty appalling for a player with such a high reputation.

It could be argued that our two biggest problems last year were lacking a prolific finisher and having a defensive backline that simply wasn't Premier League standard. The worry is that the striker problems are going from bad to acute: Delufeou was always likely to go, it increasingly feels like Deeneys days as a leading man are numbered, Gray's wages are too expensive for the Championship even if there was any confidence at all he could step up and now Welbeck looks likely to be out the door.

I'm disappointed because the deficiencies of the other three meant that Welbeck was probably the most viable of our existing squad to be our main striker in the Championship (assuming we could keep him fit). Welbeck - an experienced forward who should be in his prime, with a second lease of life in the second tier - taking the pressure off Suarez, and with Deeney offering something different but in a lesser role from the bench, would probably have been my preferred scenario. With him off the table, we're left with only two unsatisfactory options (Deeney, who may still go, and Gray, who no-one may want) and Suarez (who may not come and if he does, would have to absorb a lot of pressure and expectations).

As it is we will either need to bring someone in pretty urgently or start the season with at least one of the fundamental problems of last season unsolved.
