I only really like huskies, malamutes, Alsatians, malinois, sheepdogs and labradors. He's a beautiful creature. Magnificent.

Funnily enough our other dog is a black lab. (Genuine).

However, we refuse to join the BLM FB Group because as a family we strongly believe ALL Labs Matter

And our CAMS Lives Matter campaign is more important than the privileged pampered labs.

Our CAMS movement deliberately avoids the Crufsist terminology of mutts, curs, and in Africa ‘ka***r dogs (you can be arrested for that).

In no way is the use of the term ‘mongrel’ intended to cause offence.

It is an historic term and these dogs have always been with us.
It is only modern day interpretations, snowflakes, NIMBY’s, Cruftsists and those with their heads in the sand :))) who appear to object to the terminology...

Well, given that Crufts is organised by the Kennel Club and the Kennel Club terms them "crossbreeds", I reckon that "Cruftsist terminology" list is a few decades out of date. :D

    Kennel Club - pah!!
Don’t come to me with your ‘Kennel Club’ ..

A bunch of smug elitist, self-satisfied breed-selective biased inbred purists who use the word ‘pedigree’ like it’s some sort of badge of honour.
These elitists don’t believe in breed equality and reject or look down on real hybrid vigour working dogs..

My old Jack Russell passed away before the Kennel Club would even recognise him, the heartless ba****ds.

At least he’s now in a kennel in the sky that did accept him.

This is what he thought of the Kennel Club..

I'm not sure from reading this if you're being serious or not (text is awkward sometimes), so the following reply is offered on the basis of taking it at face value. If you were joking then fair play. :D

    So on that note...

The above characterisation is honestly not accurate. I used to work there and it really couldn't be further from the truth.

Doesn't matter whether a dog is a pedigree or not, they work to improve the lot of dogs. For example, merle poodles have been a growing fad recently, but the breeding that causes the merle defect causes a lot of genetic issues: congenitally deaf puppies, cardiac issues, skeletal problems, and more. They carry MDR1 (which is a genetic issue in some herding dogs that impacts the brain and/or the blood). Additionally, MDR1 has a bad interaction with some medications such as de-wormers (specifically, it's caused by an interaction with ivermectin) that can kill the dog outright.

Merle isn't an officially recognised colour (because poodles have never and shouldn't come in that colour), so the breeders were registering them as black/white instead of merle.

In response, the KC banned registration of merle dogs and said that the practice of registering them with a fraudulent colour would not only see that dog's registered status removed, but EVERY dog that breeder had ever produced would be de-registered and the breeder's affix would be permanently revoked. Such heavy handed responses are a huge win for the health of poodles.

They run events like Discover Dogs, which pioneered Scrufts, a Crufts-esque competition for crossbreed dogs. Scrufts has since been incorporated into the main Crufts event, so crossbreeds have their own competition at the same show.

They also launched the Petlog microchip service that doesn't only service dogs, but any animal that can house a microchip. As a non-profit organisation, the KC put all the money back into improving the service, something the alternatives at the time (Identichip and PETtrac) were not doing (can't speak to current efforts but I doubt they've done much since). One of the reasons the UK microchipping law came into effect was due to sustained KC lobbying.

Other non-breed specific goals include compulsory DNA registers and testing to try and eradicate genetic issues, bans on cruel equipment like electric shock collars, opposition to the Dangerous Dogs Act, and probably a lot more now (my info is likely dated at this point).

They're a decent, well-meaning organisation that honestly cares about the wellbeing of all dogs... and it really is ALL dogs, not just pedigrees. When I used to take my crossbreed (dachshund/CKCS) to work with me she was fussed just as much if not more as any of the registered pedigrees who came in. Visiting executives and members would literally get down on their knees to pet her/give belly rubs.

The KC is largely a very beneficial body for UK dogs, pedigree or no. Unlike the American equivalent (the AKC), they actually do give a **** about something other than making money. :)

Thankyou Arakel, very informative and I’ve learnt something.

You’ll be happy to hear that my doggy posts are 100% tongue in cheek. :)

And it’s good to know the KC try to do something about inbreeding.

Although we have 2 dogs, my young son kept on about getting a Pug.
I refused, because of their predisposition to nasal/breathing/bulging eye issues due to inbreeding and consequent vet bills.

It’s cruel I believe, and certain breeds have in-breeding issues which I hope the KC does take seriously.

These ‘beauty pagents’ shows for dogs are just an incentive for more inbreeding and more genetically transmitted health issues.

As a compromise for not getting a Pug, we acquired a rabbit, - maybe not a good idea with a terrier in the household.
We called him Smokey due to his colouring but he’s a bag of nerves ...

No worries, I was 50/50 on whether or not it was sincere. Text can be hard to read sometimes!

As you can probably tell, I'm very passionate about the UK Kennel Club. I really enjoyed working for them. The pay was dire (it's a non-profit, goes with the territory), but the job was rewarding and the people who work there are genuinely dog advocates to the core. :)

For any dog lovers who like a good read, I can highly recommend ‘Jock of the Bushveld’ by Sir Percy FitzPatrick.

True story of a Staffie cross that was the runt of the litter but Percy chose him over others due to his spirit.
Gold rush era in SA when Ox Waggons brought supplies from the coast to the goldfields in the 1800’s and Waggon masters usually had a dog as they hunted for food en route through the bush.

All the adventures of Jock and Percy. He told the stories to his family who persuaded him to publish them and the book has been a constant best seller in SA and never been out of print since 1907.

You can go on the Jock of the Bushveld trail in Kruger Park where the events depicted took place.
eg when a nasty store owner bet wagon masters to pit their dog against a captured tethered baboon that killed many dogs but Jock killed the baboon.
And he took on a crocodile!

It’s a lovely story and you can often pick up a cheap second hand copy on Amazon -
hopefully with the original line drawing illustrations on each page and in the original text (not the PC language version)..

  15. We had a Rottweiler many years ago, and a couple of rabbits. He used to guard them. When they were loose on the lawn he'd follow them still guarding, he was quite happy for them to jump around and on him, but any visitors dogs go near the hutch woe betide them. We didn't teach him he did it entirely by instinct.
