Goals, assists etc are great, but people are overlooking the most important thing here.

How many extra Kelme shirts will Welbeck help shift in the Chinese market, given his links to both Man Utd and Arsenal?

The club might be worried about alienating the Arsenal and Man Utd fans who go to our games if they get rid of Welbeck. Unlikely we'll retain them all anyway as they won't even want to go once or twice a season on their Family Stand cheap ticket.

    Tough one.

Fair points. It’s important we make decisions on our playing squad with the “brand” in mind.

It certainly diminishes the validity of our claims to being “best of the rest” if we let valued and recognizable brand ambassadors leave.

Wasn't that initially and then they offered him a regular contract?

Pretty sure it's £25k pw when he doesn't play, and £70k pw when he does play

Well if that's the case then we may as well sell him for 5 million because we can't afford that in The Championship.

A stint in the championship could actually do Wellbeck some good. He seems like he has his head screwed on and a move at the moment is probably not best for him.
On top form and fitness he could bang in 20 plus goals in the championship and that will get people interested. If I was him I'd be looking at staying put for at least the first window. If he does well they'll be some big offers knocking on the door at Xmas. Any move now will be tinged with a touch of doubt and consequently slightly budget.

Unless a top 6 team comes in for him (I doubt they will) he risks moving for no improvement on this year and consecutive relegations could end any potential end of career resurgence. Half a season out of the spotlight will help him.

As I said before he needs to stay above all the experienced forwards. Get rid of Gray, Deeney first. Then his 70k a week when playing wouldn't hurt so much. If he wants to stay is another matter though! Big risk to expect him to start every game though but hopefully he wouldn't need to with new fresh younger players pushing him. If DeeKnee stays they showed enough against Woolwich to show they could develop a decent partnership.
Gray is the problem that needs sorting. Someone will take a gamble on him. Sooner than later I hope.

I think Welbeck will leave if a team come offering. Maybe a team like Palace who's only recognised striker I believe is Benteke.
Which will leave Gray pushing for a start which is fine by me, I would like to see what he can do in this league.

I dont believe he will. Well that's more in hope on my behalf. Purely because I don't want Gray anywhere near this team. If we can offload any forward it should be him first.

Well if I was offered a route back to the Premier League on more money in an area of the country I'd be happy with, in his shoes I'd move. ;)

I understand what you're saying but he might be the type of player who wants to show some commitment back to the club ,after taking a chance on him. But if he goes I will wish him well.

I’d agree if he wasn’t on a structured deal based on playing, but as he is he doesn’t really owe us anything.

Not unimportant if it helps us afford his wages. 2,000 incremental shirts sold a week in a market of 1 billion and he pays for himself.

Bit self-defeating, considering that he’d just be paying for himself to sit in the treatment room.

And that in itself opens up a whole new product line we could sell. The WFC Stethoscope signed by Danny Welbeck.

I don’t recognise Benteke as a striker. Their main man this past season was Ayew.

If he's in the treatment room, we only need to sell 500 shirts to cover his wages as he's not playing. So could well be making a profit at this point. No biggy.

Too late to edit the post above but I just wanted to add two things.

Welbeck to Besiktas seems widespread in Turkey now with a loan move preferred by the Black Eagles.

The other rumour coming out of Turkey suggests Abdoulaye Doucoure is wanted by Galatasaray.

Every transfer window while Watford were in the EPL players were linked with moves from Turkey. Now we've dropped a division it seems the direction of the rumour has switched.

Of course they'd prefer a loan move, doesn't mean we should sanction it though. Someone else would surely cough up some dosh for Welbz if we wanted to sell.

Also, are Galatasaray even a more attractive proposition than playing for us in the Championship? Not convinced they are, they're not even in Europe next season - either the EL or CL. Doucoure's not had a great season but surely he can do better than that if he wants to leave.

Hasn't he only got one year left on his contract? If that's right why would we allow a loan?

Firstly, the Welbeck & Doucoure posts are merely rumours.
I wasn't thinking too deeply about them when I posted, they were just something I hadn't seen before and thought them mildly curious.
It's transfer window time and we all know a huge percentage of this stuff isn't reliable so take it with a pinch of salt.

However, if by chance there is some credibility to them...

re. Welbeck's contract, I wouldn't have any confidence in saying he has either 1 or 2 years left.
I've looked and cannot find anything official from the club from when he signed.
A couple of outlets say it was a 3 year deal, including The Athletic, and a couple say it was 2 years. The Athletic now say it was for 2 years so he may be in the final year of his contract or it may end in 2022.

If any of this is true, my only reasoning for the club to send him out temporarily would be to have a loan fee incoming, to wipe his wages either wholly or partly off the accounts or to free up a place in the squad for someone they see as a better fit or has better value.

And if the buying club doesn't want to commit to what may be excessive wage demands by their standards over a 2 or 3 year period then a loan for them seems sensible.

So if we did want to move Welbeck on to take his wage of the books or to just free up a squad space then maybe a loan is the only viable way during this economically challenged window for us to do so whether he has 1 or 2 years left of his contract.

And as he was a free transfer, receiving a loan fee above any signing on fee paid to the player himself means the outlay over the past season is minimised. Have his wages paid by the club he's loaned to next season (maybe another loan fee and wages paid for the season after) and I imagine the club will do better than break even.

But again, they are only rumours.

This has three year contract length (but it’s talk sport who mainly talk ****)

I thought I had vague memories of it being 1 or 2 year with an option to extend but might be confused

90mins had 3 years as well. As I said in the player contract thread, I think it's impossible to be 100% sure what the length of his contract is.

Still got something to offer in the top flight, did well to get fit and get a run of games together post-restart, although it was a shame from our perspective that it was too little too late. I'd wish him well, can't begrudge him wanting to stay in the Prem, as long as we can keep Suarez, I'm happy enough for him to move on

Given he was on a free and his wage wouldn't have been maxed out that should at least be a small profit for the club. Will be irritating if he starts banging them in for another side given how patient we had to be in getting him back to fitness, though I doubt he'll ever be prolific considering his poor finishing. He's a decent squad option for the PL but didn't really offer enough as a starter.

Would he even start for them? Che Adams hit a nice run of form at the end of the season, would be a battle between those two to start with Ings I imagine
