    Fark off £5m o_O

We would be mad to let him go for that, in fact I think we would be mad to let him go at all.

We appear to have nursed the guy back to health so lets at least enjoy the fruits of our labours and get some playing time out of him. I think as long as he stays fit, and judging by the way he has been playing since coming back he might just do so, therefore I reckon he will be a great asset for us during this coming season.

His value to us would almost certainly be far greater than a paltry £5m, because I believe he could well prove to be a big factor in us bouncing back to the PL.

£5m. Haha. Just because we got him for free doesn't mean he's worth a bit more than zero.

£5m barely covers his medical bills for the last season.

Bit harsh, he's managed to get through these last 9 games in one piece!

A little over two years ago he was playing for England, do you think he would be happy playing in the championship!

I depends, he may get his mojo back and score 30 goals. However if we don't have a relegation clause in his contract then it might be best to sell.

We can bemoan the fee all we like, but Welbeck would probably love to stay in the Premier League, and at that age and with 1 year on his contract, we ain't gonna get big money for him. With Palace though, I'd have thought they'd have wanted to reduce the age of their squad, 29 year old forward who's not exactly been banging them in for fun doesn't exactly scream good business. I see they're interested in Sarr (as they were last summer) but surely he could do better than that? Still, £40m apparently from them, hopefully we can squeeze a better offer out of an Arsenal or an Everton

5m sounds pretty fair considering his injury history. I'd like him to stay, especially since we were the ones who took the gamble, but all the best to him if he leaves.

    £15m at least.

    He only signed last summer.

No way Gino is letting him go on the cheap.

  11. £5m lol. Promotion is worth hundreds of millions, it’s a drop in comparison. Well worth the risk of saying ‘sorry you stay here for 12 months’ and he walking away next summer. It’s a no brainer to keep him.

He was clearly our best striker towards the end of the season but we insisted on playing Deeney. What could have been if we played him central and dropped Deeney, probably survival.

I can’t see us selling him for £5mil. In fact that’s laughable that that’s the fee mentioned.

He is worth at £15mil in today’s market. If he can stay fit for even 20/25 games a season, then he will benefit any team in the bottom half of the Prem.

No one will pay £15 million for a striker who is hardly fit unfortunately but we should try to keep him.

We cannot sell everyone half decent.

Welbeck is one player we need to retain for next season. I'd be gutted if we let him go. We'd never be able to replace his quality for the nominal fee we'd get for him.

Of the senior forwards Danny is the only one I'd want to keep. Desperately needed for the push next season for his capabilities across the front line. Has the experience needed for the younger guys too. 5m is absolutely pointless to us at the moment.

I read that although we got him on a 'free' there was a 5m signing on fee? Seems a bit far fetched?

No idea whether it’d be £5m but I’d imagine it was substantial. That’s the biggest benefit to players these days of moving on a bosman - they can pocket a bigger chunk of what would have been the transfer fee.

  20. Ybotcoombes

Wellbeck knows how to score so would like to keep him , in reality he should be worth more than £5m , but would you pay £15m for a player with his track record of being injured.

Didn’t we sign him on pay to play basis (or at least bonus to play)

The problem is £5m doesn’t get us anywhere close to a fit Welbeck, the flip side is there is no guarantee that he stays fit.

It’s such a nominal amount though, I’d tell them to shove it, worst case scenario he spends most of the season injured and we could’ve made £5m, best case he scores 25+ goals and instead of £5m we get £100m+.

Wouldn't let him go for that. Not a chance. We'd be better off having him score 20 in the Championship, getting us up and then ******* off on a free if he still wants.

  23. Arakel

If there is any truth in him being on a reduced wage when injured, I really can't see the point of selling him for $5 million.

If he's fit, he'll likely terrorize Championship defences. If he isn't, he'll cost us peanuts.

Only potential issue would be if he was fit, but unmotivated due to wanting out and thus playing like crap. Having said that, he's never struck me as an unprofessional player (just an injury-prone one).

Quality forwards get you out of the Championship, and a striker who was regularly playing for England two years ago is far beyond what most Championship teams can hope for.

Welbeck is a class player, good movement and can stick it in the back of the net. If we got an offer of at least £10 million it would make sense to consider it. £5 million is an insult.

I seem to remember the story was £50k p/w if fit and around £20k if he wasn’t.

In a way that might work against us, in that had he been on full whack the whole time, we could more reasonably refuse a move and say you owe us because we took you on even with your record, paid you when injured etc.

Obviously either way there is nothing to stop us refusing a move, it’s just we might feel more inclined to let him go if he was on a special contract.

Regardless I certainly wouldn’t let him got for £5m, £10m and then it’s more worthwhile.

I thought I'd just bump the above earlier post of mine, rather write something similar again.

I also agree with Arakel in post #23. He would be far too professional to not play his best, and if he wasn't professional about it would work against him getting a move at a later date, because no one would want him if he played like that.

If we'd not been relegated how much would you have wanted Watford to spend on Welbeck had he been playing for Norwich and gone down with them?

A 29-year old who possibly hasn't seen full fitness for 2 years now, picks up strains as regularly as most with a couple of lengthy periods out through serious injury too.

In the season just gone he played 18 times (800+ minutes) and scored 2 with 0 assists.
According to EPL stats he had a 41% shooting accuracy, missed 5 big chances and created 0.
For a player playing wide on the left he crossed the ball just once.

He isn't and never has been a prolific scorer.
According to Soccer24 stats (the first site I pulled up) he has never got into double figures for league goals in a single season.

I think he has 2 more years on his contract and he'll be on a pretty decent wage even if it is incentivised.

Would you want us to pay £5m? Somewhere between £5m & £10m maybe? Or would you want Pozzo to splash something like £15m and cross everything he stays fit and finds his scoring boots.

For all his pedigree, isn't the risk of him not playing through injury and lack of consistent goalscoring when he is fit a high risk to carry into a condensed & fixture heavy Championship season? Surely there are more robust forwards out there who the club can afford with any fee received and the save in wages who would represent more value for money.

I realise the Championship is an easier league and Welbeck should have a better end product in it (innit) but there's no guarantee that would happen, just as I know there's no guarantee anyone we bring in to replace him would either. I just think from a value point of view his record of injury & lack of goals/assists isn't worth the risk.

I'd say sell for anything over £5m if that's what's offered and look to invest that money in a player, possibly a loan (with hopefully £££'s leftover if that's the case), and have Joao Pedro and the new player share responsibilities in that wide left berth.

What you’re saying makes sense but it’s really about the opportunity though. £5m is **** all, but we’d never get a fit wellbeck to play for us in the championship if he didn’t already belong to us. It’s the opportunity to have an England striker (16 goals in 42 games for England by the way) play for us in the championship vs £5m quid.

  29. GoingDown

    GoingDown "The Stability"

Yeah. All been said before. For some reason, Watford fans believe he has some sort of Aguero level goalscoring record. He's hardly ever played as a central striker.

He'll last 5 minutes on a dodgy Championship pitch before being injured.

£5m or so to get rid is a bonus.

  30. a19tgg

He’s a good player. He’s played for Man Utd, Arsenal and England (for whom he has an extremely good goal scoring record). It doesn’t really matter what position he plays, he’s far too good for the championship and £5m is neither here nor there. Worst case scenario he’s injured the entire season, he’ll still have a year on his contract then, so what’s the worst case scenario, we miss out on £5m?

That's why I said sell for anything over £5m (provided it's on offer, obviously).

I'm just not sure what his worth is to a jobbing Premiership side like Palace given his end product so I don't see a big fee being offered. We took a punt on a free agent and let's be honest, it didn't really work out in terms of goals or assists. He's a tidy player now but past his best.

The only true benefit I see in keeping him would be him having Joao Pedro under his wing. But at 29 will he realistically be wanting to play in the Championship anyway, he'd surely jump at the chance of staying in the EPL if offers come in.

I’d agree he’d jump at the chance to stay in the PL, the question is do we let him. Nobody really knows how much we’ll need to get back up at the first attempt, but I think the more we take the approach of using a revolver to crack a walnut the better and easier it will be. I just don’t see any real downside to trying to keep him, but a much greater potential upside.

Not to worry we will still have Gray smashing them wide next season. I can't effin wait.

The club may even feel they've invested a lot of time & money getting him fit for him to show some loyalty and stay. I wouldn't be disappointed if he stayed, I'd just prefer it if he didn't.

If he stayed fit and shared the wide left position with JP then great, I think he'd represent good value. I just doubt his fitness over a season so would rather off load that risk and invest any monies in someone else.
