If Welbeck can stay fit and is utilised down the middle, he could score 25 goals in the Championship.

We have a talented midfield even without the likes of Capoue and Doucoure. Hughes and Chalobah would p1ss over any midfield in the Championship.

The biggest issue will be our defence!! Too old, too slow, too sh*t.

I still don't get the hype with Quina. Barmy.
Similar to when some were frothing at mouth to see Bachmann play, only for him to turn out to be a Perry Digweed reincarnation and have two horror games against Tranmere.

Our squad for next season should be hugely different to how it is now. But it won't be. We will lose a few who don't want to be here - Deulofeu, Pereyra, Capoue, Doucoure, Sarr will all go. Of those I would only miss seeing Capoue when he has his few good games of the season and Sarr. The rest have all been half arsed this season and can happily go.

A change between the sticks is in order.
Our existing defence is Championship level so as much as it pains me I don't see huge change coming there. Janmaat is ok but he's only ever fit for a hour or so each season.
Chalobah, Cleverley, Hughes are three Championship level midfielders, though Hughes arguably would deserve a move.
Deeney and Gray will play significant parts next season. If we keep hold of Welbeck we will have done well. He is very good, clearly, but too injury prone for a normal club to take a punt on him so I reckon he might stay.
Somebody might take a punt on Pedro.

It isn't a squad that will have us challenging to go up, but as next season will be about cutting our cloth I don't expect to see any major in-comings.

For the sake of argument and likelihood this is assuming we are in the championship next year.

    Goalkeepers

    B. Foster - Stay
    P. Dahlberg - Stay
    H. Gomes - Possibly move up to player coach
    D. Bachmann - Stay

Time for Gomes to possibly step up to the coaching staff and maybe remain registered as a player for cover.

    Defenders

    C. Kabasele - Stay
    C. Dawson - Stay
    C. Cathcart - Stay?
    A. Mariappa - Stay?
    A. Masina - Stay
    J. Holebas - Go
    K. Femenia - Stay
    D. Janmaat - Go
    D. Foulquier - Go
    M. Navarro - Stay
    T. Wilmot - Stay
    P. Estupinan - Stay

We obviously need some additions in defence, and depending on who, if any, we recruit, those with question marks might possibly go as well.

    Midfielders

    E. Capoue - stay
    N. Chalobah - Stay
    A. Doucoure - Go
    W. Hughes - Stay
    T. Cleverley - Go sorry to say this but he seems to have lost it since his return from injury :(
    D. Quina - Stay
    T. Dele-Bashiru - Stay
    R. Pereyra - Go
    G. Deulofeu - Stay
    I. Success - Go
    I. Sarr - Stay
    I. Pussetto - Stay

Some additions in MF would not go a miss, but we are not to badly covered in this area.

    Forwards

    J. Pedro - Stay
    A. Gray - Go
    C. Hernandez - Stay
    T. Deeney - Stay?
    D. Welbeck - Stay
    A. Penaranda - Stay?
    F. Stuparevic - Stay
    J. Sinclair - Go
    L. Suarez - Stay

We definitely need additions in the out and out striker department, and if we manage to get a decent Goal Scorer or two in, then those with question marks would possibly go as well.

Last summer, the narrative from the club was how great it was to keep our key players. That's proven to be nonsense, since clearly it left some of them complacent and saw a slip in their play. Now I think we'll be stuck with dead wood that can't be moved on, while the talent will head off. It becomes an average, old Championship squad.

What I think will happen, assuming we go down:

    Keepers

    B. Foster - Stay
    P. Dahlberg - Stay
    H. Gomes - Go
    D. Bachmann - Go (maybe loan)

    Defenders

    C. Kabasele - Stay
    C. Dawson - Stay (relegated twice in a couple years, will a Prem club want him)
    C. Cathcart - Stay
    A. Mariappa - Stay (re-signed, right?)
    A. Masina - Go - Back to Italy
    J. Holebas - Go - Contract over, wife already posting about moving to Germany
    K. Femenia - Stay
    D. Janmaat - Go
    D. Foulquier - Go
    M. Navarro - Stay (Didn't play much in Spain, could be a useful Championship piece)
    B. Wilmot - Stay
    P. Estupinan - Go (Pozzo will cash in)

    Midfielders

    E. Capoue - Go (But someone said £7.5 mil - no way it's that much - but a useful piece maybe for a club in France)
    N. Chalobah - Stay (Club will realise we need him, and he needs us to get playing time)
    A. Doucoure - Go (How the star has dimmed. From PSG to probably an upper-mid French club?)
    W. Hughes - Go (So sad about this, but think he's headed to a bottom half Prem club like Palace, Soton, etc. And he deserves Prem football)
    T. Cleverley - Stay
    D. Quina - Stay
    T. Dele-Bashiru - Stay
    R. Pereyra - Go (Obviously)
    G. Deulofeu - Stay then go (Won't be moved in the summer with the knee injury, so starts year with us and then maybe moves in winter?)
    I. Success - Go (Please god finally)
    I. Sarr - Go (thinking on loan, because as of now we won't get our money back and the Pozzos think he could be worth a lot more)
    I. Pussetto - Stay

    Forwards

    J. Pedro - Stay
    A. Gray - Stay (can't see a deal happening, and maybe a useful Championship piece)
    C. Hernandez - Stay
    T. Deeney - Stay (they can't say goodbye yet)
    D. Welbeck - Go (I thought it was just a one year deal, clearly wrong, but regardless he'll head to a mid table Prem club)
    A. Penaranda - Who knows - does this guy even play football anymore?
    J. Sinclair - Go (or stay... or loan... who knows why his career has been so derailed)
    L. Suarez - Go (Club will take the money)

    Goalkeepers:
    Keep Foster & Dahlberg.
    Loan out Bachmann.
    Gomes retiring.

    Defenders:
Keep Janmaat, Dawson, Masina, Cathcart, Wilmot & Estupinan.
    Sell Femenia, Kabasele & Navarro.
    Release Mariappa.

    Midfielders:
Keep Cleverley, Chalobah, Hughes, & Quina.
    Loan out Dele-Bashiru.
Sell Doucoure, Capoue, Pereyra & Sema.
    Release Whelan.

    Forwards:
Keep Welbeck, Pedro, Sarr, Pussetto & Suarez.
    Loan out Cucho.
Sell Deulofeu, Deeney, Penaranda, Gray & Success.
    Release Sinclair.

Definitely be some that we won't be able to keep/sell out of that list but that would leave us looking strong still IMO with a fair bit of space for new additions as well.

I can personally see a situation where we try and drive a hard bargain for players like Doucoure and try and get £20m-£25m for him. Sending Pereyra to Udinese seems counter productive unless the money genuinely comes to us and is around £10m-£15m. If we can get £6m-£8m for Deeney and say £8m for Gray, that would offset a lot of losses and help us with both income and losing high earners. Deulofeu should fetch between £20m-£25m as well should it be that we have no chance of keeping him. Femenia too could get £6m roughly? I think we can afford to lose all of the above and replace them with players of perhaps lesser ability, but more suited to the task ahead and with a greater desire to play for the club.

Doucoure has a replacement in Quina.
Femenia has a replacement in Ngakia.
Deeney and Gray can be replaced by Suarez, Cucho, Welbeck and Joao Pedro.
Deulofeu can be replaced by Sema.
    Holebas replaced by Estupinan.

Wilmot will be added and if we can bin off either Cathcart or (preferably) Kabasele and add a CB (Matt Clarke, Shane Duffy?) then the squad is shorn of ageing, underperforming high-earners with minimal work really needed in terms of transfers.

Pereyra is perhaps is the only player in amongst that lot that we can’t replace internally...

Doing the above surely would give us greater flexibility in keeping Sarr/Estupinan/Suarez/Welbeck who I would say should be a bigger priority in keeping over the players above (Deulofeu aside, but I just can’t see him staying a WFC player unless there’s a season long loan involved). If we can get close to the fees I’ve suggested, then it would likely give us a modest amount to spend as well.

If we have to sell any players to raise cash, then of the ones who might command a reasonable fee, I would not be adverse to selling: -

Deeney, mainly because surprisingly he seems to be attracting interest from some PL clubs therefore we might as well cash in on a decent fee; Pereyra, because he has been rubbish for us for a couple of years, but somehow still has a decent rep elsewhere so the fee again should be reasonable and likewise Doucoure as his rep is somehow still good, but as we all know he has not been that great for us in recent times, however we should be able to get a decent fee for him as others seem to still rate him highly.

There is of course some deadwood we also should get rid of, but I see those three as the biggest money spinners who I would not be unhappy to see go.

I still believe that we should try and hold on to the best of our existing squad, as that to me will be the best way of getting straight back to the PL. Having said that a lot of those players will not be good enough for the PL, so once they have won us promotion at the end of next season, I would offload quite a few of them. However, for now most of them are more than good enough to get us back to the PL.

i can’t speak for the away replay, but how was the home game against Tranmere a horror for Bachmann? The whole team capitulated, but let’s single out the keeper? Every keeper needs game hours to improve, what Bachman showed in that game was someone willing to command his box and go for crosses and made some sharp saves (saves are easily forgotten when the keeper makes an error) . He’ll develop well if given time. This is why keepers shy away from collecting crosses now; if it goes wrong it looks bad, but it releases so much pressure from the defence.

  18. Hogg-DEENEY!!!

    Hogg-DEENEY!!! Squad Player

I don't know all that much about him, but unless Foster gets dramatically worse (even with the odd error creeping into his game he still had a good season), I don't see Bachmann being #1. Quina was never going to step in and be world class or anything, but he might have made a difference this season, and last season when he did get a run in the team, he hardly put a foot wrong. I can see him being a top top Championship player next season

  19. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

Develop well given time? He’s been with the club long enough now and clearly never shown enough to compete with Gomes or Foster. Was released by Stoke as well - all the signs are that a midtable SPL side was his level.

I’m all for not writing players off. But they do have to show something and Bachmann has shown little to nothing.

Yes, what about the rest of the performance? Id rated him quite highly and some real potential.

There seems to be different standards for goalkeepers. Gomes was seen as useless and beyond hope by spurs fans. Were they correct?

Ive seen our midfielders giveaway simple passes that have led to goals against us.

When Quina has played he has looked more than capable, I went to the cup game against Reading and he absolutely ran the show against them which makes me think that he will be a valuable asset in The Championship. In fairness to Bachman he did not do himself much justice in the Tranmere game which was possibly because he had not played regularly, I watch quite a bit of Scottish football and Bachman was very impressive at Kilmarnock , I actually think he would do well if he was given a run of games.

If we managed to keep the squad we have together with no departing and no incomings, would that be classed as a real sign of intent to push for an immediate return to the top flight or show a complete lack of intent with a deadwood squad from the core?

So that’s now Sarr and Suarez added to the list of staying.

    Obviously money changes everything.

However for now though, if reports are to be believed that were planning on keeping Sarr and Suarez, then that’s huge.

Hughes and Wilmot have been told about future captaincy.

If we go into the season with this being our core then we have every chance of winning the league

    Foster

    ? Wilmot ? Masina

    Hughes Quina Chalobah

    Sarr Suarez Pedro

Sign a decent RB (preferably Bogle from Derby), Clarke from Brighton (even a loan will do) or Cooper from Millwall, Pickering from Crewe for LB and we’re sorted.

With the likely sales of Femenia, Capoue, Doucoure, Pereyra, Gray, Estupinan and Deulofeu, that will be enough to balance the books for the season, cut the wage bill and sign those players above.

A little bit football manager, but somewhat realistic.

    The paraphrased addition via Burnsy

The reporter said that we have no plans to actively sell him and it would have been out of the question had we stayed up. Was seen as a player who we could have doubled our investment on and had a £70m+ price tag - but relegation will see us accept he “may leave” - but reiterated that it won’t be for less than £50m and any story of Watford accepting him leaving on loan are inaccurate.

So basically it’s pay up or shut up to clubs chasing him. £50mil+ or feck off! We don’t want to sell him, don’t need to sell him, planning on him being with us, unless a silly offer of £50mil+ is made.
