To be fair.......every dismissal has been a "wheels coming off" situation. This squad we have nosedives far too often, and when they are in that type of form it looks utterly hopeless.

Clearly you cannot dismiss an entire squad, but it always looks like the coach does not have the ability to turn things around.

We need to get a proven coach, or someone with a good track record, who fits all the club's ideals, then stick with him. Gracia has been really the only coach that ticked all the boxes. But his bad run carried on over a preseason and the following season we were so unfit it was crazy. The bad run was lengthy.

Pearson was the same. On the surface he looked like someone who could be trusted to build a club around, but the owner doesn't want that as a profile. They don't want a manager, they just want a coach. Pearson is a manager. Personally this is what I think we need, someone who sets the tone for the club. We do not have this.

Gino, Duxbury and Giraldi are all involved, but they seem to be observing with lots of head shaking when things go wrong. They are not leading the team, but it's not their job to do that either. This is why we do need a manager. Someone who is more involved in setting the tone, not just picking the team, tactics and training. Watford need someone who is more than that, this is why I was hopeful over Pearson.

But like all the others, Pearson's Watford went on a really bad run. 11 games only 1 win and 6 points. That's terrible. The final straw was how lackluster we were at West Ham, in such a huge game. It surprised me, as if Pearson can't fire the team up, what use is he? He is a motivational coach, not a tactical one. If motivation is lacking, then he's not the guy for us after all.

Watford are being slagged off in all the papers today.
Chaos and disintegrate is the buzz words.
Doucoure, Sarr, Capoue, Pereyra, Deulofeu and possibly Deeney to be sold.
    Very interesting time ahead.

If we were to sell all these players, then I think it would be tough to bounce back next season.

I’m new here. I’ve been lurking for years and used to post on the old official forums and even on here in the early days but I lost my email and password.

Anyway. I think we’d be ok losing all of those if we kept Sarr and invested elsewhere. In fact that sounds almost exciting.

It is a frustrating time, but, to be fair to the hierarchy, if Deulofeu (recruited by the current set up) had not been injured, we would, in my view, have survived comfortably. They have made some big mistakes (particularly this season), as all clubs do, but they will be as anxious as the fans to get back to the top league again.

I wonder what the reaction would have been had we kept Pearson and got down?

Clearly he was never going to stay regardless.

I believe many in the press think Pearson would have got a result to keep us up.

But not so sure - we would have had to win anyway.

Almost let's the players and owners hide behind their own failings.

Is no one as worried as me about our defence.

that was our biggest problem this year. I don't buy that what we have is good enough to storm the championship. I want it to be rebuilt root and branch. No point talking about what fancy Dan midfielders and forwards we probably wont keep with a bunch of useless in defence

I’m not so sure we’d have been fine.

If Deulofeu had made a difference in those Leicester/Burnley/Soton games then its fairly certain our defence would have “stepped up” and given more goals away v Norwich or Newcastle. It’s a yin and yang thing.

Ultimately, regardless of attacking shortcomings, it was the defensive frailties -so obvious for so long- that took us down.

Even at the very end, we needed at least one point in the last 3 games - or at the very least to protect our GD. We shipped 10.

Unfortunately I always think of Palace at this point.... when in the mid season poop a couple years ago, with a terrible goal difference, they bet big on Sakho in the January window. It just galvanised them for the rest of the season. Worth every penny, really.

    We did nothing about ours.

All good points. I feel that a team with greater attacking options will always defend in a more efficient manner. Teams playing us post lock down knew that nullifying Sarr meant that we were a dud in terms of attack, and they could focus on breaking us down. If we had Deulofeu up in attack, it would give opposition teams more to think about. We needed one more point plus a slightly better goal difference to survive. I think GD would have made up that difference, but "what ifs" are a waste of time.

On the broader issue, I hope owners have learned from their errors and introduce a more long term and stable approach to managerial appointments. The apparent oversight policy on managers would be impossible for most managers to accept and they should know that now. I certainly believe that the owners will put the time and effort in, probably not huge resources, and try to pick up some decent new recruits. We have had some poor players (and managers) during their time, but we should remember some of the good recruits too. I'm hopeful that we can get back, but not overly optimistic.

I have to admit much to my own shame that sometimes, sometimes I have let you all down and don't read every single post. I hope the owner doesn't read this or Ill be fired.

I was just getting the impression that lots of people are more concerned about fancy dan midfield and forward types staying.

Typical. We’re rotten from the top down as a club. Even our own board of directors on this forum can’t be bothered. We’re an absolute shambles of club. Only one thing left to do. Liquidate the club and start from scratch. Grass roots football and in 30 years we will be back in Prem with owners and forum directors who actually care about the club.

He might have done, or two.

We wouldn't have needed to win - a 2-0 defeat or better against Man City and a draw at Arsenal would have kept us up, something that was not beyond the team's capabilities.

Did you see how we performed after lockdown? There were no indications at all that Pearson was going to find a result in those 2 games. I’d go as far as saying Mullins had us performing out best post-lockdown football against Arsenal. Sadly we had to be 3-0 down to play it.

I wouldn't go that far - terribly though we performed for the most part against Burnley, Southampton and West Ham, Pearson clearly had had strong words with the players at half time at the London Stadium, sending them out several minutes before West Ham and the team did look fired up, albeit before typically tiring on the 70 minute mark. Perhaps Pearson might have continued the momentum into the next two games, ensuring the team heeded the wake-up call that was the shambolic first half.

    We'll never know of course...

Papers are overjoyed Watford have given them so much to write about in the close season. I don't blame them, mind.
Pereyra can go as fast and as far as he likes as far as I am concerned.
Deeney might go on a nostalgia trip to his beloved Birmingham, but otherwise he will be recovering (or not) from an operation and is the wrong side of 30.
I hope we keep the other 4.

Seems no coincidence that we finally looked half competent once we played two up front again, too.

Given that Kiko and Masina are clearly more suited to wing/wing back roles, I think there's a solid argument we should have been playing 352 to fit the personnel we had available. Of course, that raises the problem of where to play Sarr.

Still, no point armchair head coaching it now.

Fair points - against Arsenal we should have got something anyway even at 3-0 which is more of a frustration as to why we didn't threaten more in easier games.

Man City do always hammer us although some of the goals were avoidable .

We have the same morons running the club who offered Isaac Success a FIVE YEAR contract after doing a grand total of **** all in the previous 3 years. He had 2 years left on his deal. What the **** was up with that?

You could make a bigger squad out of all the flops they've signed in our epl era than players who have had a single consistent month
