I recently finished reading 1984 for the first time. Great book.

Currently reading a book called "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion". Basically it uses a variety of case studies and theories to explain why we say yes to things. Only on chapter 2 so far, but I'm really enjoying it so far. Highly applicable to anyone in marketing or sales.

Just restarted A Suitable Boy again, prompted by the TV series. Determined to finish it this time. Very long book!

I think I’ve read that, I seem to recall a section that teaches you how to influence people to pick a certain cup, in that trick you do with three cups and something hidden under one?

Not sure. If this is the same book, I haven't got to that part yet!

Re reading some absolute trash, but taking my mind off this pandemic and relegation stuff that’s going, epic fantasy books - ( David Eddings)...alongside a fascinating, if a bit long winded at times , bio of Hans Sloane...

Great read. You never once suspect that she's actually the killer, until that bit with the kipper right at the end.

I don’t know what it is but I really struggle to read fiction. I loved 1984 though, I tore through it, couldn’t put it down. That was until I left it on a tram in Amsterdam a couple of years ago and I still have no idea what happens in the last 50 or so pages. Going to get a copy and have re read this weekend :)

Recently though.... Read some Oscar Wilde for the first time, I think it would have had more of an impact if I’d read it as a teenager.

I mostly just flick through biographies but I’ve got the attention span of a flea.

    Elton’s book was funny.

Limmy’s (Scottish comedian) autobiography was hilarious and addressed mental health issues in an uncompromising and reassuringly familiar way.

Adam Buxton’s Audiobook was fun. It’s coming out in print soon I think. Partly a memoir about growing up in the 80’s, partly about looking after his terminally ill dad. As an audiobook it cuts to sort of voice notes that annotate the book. It’s got an hour long interview with Joe Cornish at the end too, which is great.

The last good books I read, both some time ago, were Frank Skinner and Frankie Boyle's autobiographies. Both very funny and great reads.

No shame in that. We must each do whatever we can to get us through these difficult times. I'm glad to hear you've found something that has helped you :)

Any chance you can use the spoiler tag for posts like these in future? I haven't read this book but it was on my list.

I've read a few books in lockdown. I also read 1984 for the first time, enjoyed it. I've been reading a lot of Michael Lewis books - I read Moneyball, the Blind Side & his most recent book The Fifth Risk, which were all excellent, especially the Fifth Risk.

Currently reading 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. Early on in the lockdown Kobo had their classics section for free, so I bulk downloaded a ton.

I've read 1984 before, generally I really enjoyed it although there's one loooong chapter in the middle where Winston is directly reading out of 'The Book', which I found dry and tedious. Personally I preferred Animal Farm.

When we went away earlier this year I took a book of first world war poetry. When I showed Mrs Lloyd what I was reading she said: "you're determined not to enjoy this holiday aren't you"

I only ever read when going on long holiday flights (on way back I’m too busy editing photos!). Took advantage of the Amazon audible offer of a free month and 2 free audio books (fully intend to cancel when I get back next week). Listened to the Matthew Perry (“Chandler” from “Friends”) autobiography that came out last year. Christ that guy was and is ****ed up with addiction. Pretty sad and harrowing life story but told in a very funny self deprecating way once you get used to his slow US drawl, probably affected by his years of drink and drug abuse.

Just finished 2 x Ben Elton books off the charity table.

    1. High society - about an mp who wants to legalise all drugs. Not bad. Some good arguments put forward 6/10

    2. Time and again - about time travelling and changing history. Quite entertaining. 7/10.

Ha ha! Me too, but several decades later I decided to give them another go (I can't remember why). I found them slightly more enjoyable second time round - but there wasn't much in it

Reading “The Mission House” by Cary’s Davies at the moment. Was a gift from a friend. I’m about three quarters of the way through and enjoying it so far although I suspect it’s going to have a sad ending. Next on my radar is “The Push” by Ashley Audrain. It came up on “booktok” a lot when I was looking for novels that my 16 year old might like. She found it a good read and I’m giving it a go myself as I think it has similar vibes to “We Need to Talk About Kevin” which I found compelling when I read it many moons ago.

Also read “Dracula” recently for the first time. The 16 year old was having to read it for A Level English Lit and was struggling as Gothic Literature isn’t her cup of tea, so I said I’d read it too so I could discuss it with her if she wanted me to. I actually enjoyed it, although it wouldn’t be my genre of choice within the classics.

I take it that's the Bram Stoker one? Not sure if there are any other ones, but a bit like Mary Shelley (Frankenstein) two legendry authors of their time. Stoker's "paraphrasing" is second to none, although the "English" used is dated, his expression of word is top class.

Also, "To Kill A Mockingbird" and "A View From A Bridge" are both excellent reads. A bit old now, but powerful.
