Why is Deeney STILL untouchable?

We couldn’t have been further from “going out on our shield”.

Ridiculous statement considering the way we rolled over, closed our eyes, and presented our gaping hole for the likes of City, Chelsea and even ******* West Ham to pillage us without remorse.

His attitude to his teammates is the aspect that has really angered me, especially the young ones like Sarr and err Sarr!
His body language is dreadful to others when they displease him and as you say rueful indifference when he is culpable.
Truly a metaphor for how PL football is all hype over substance.
Never did you or do you hear Luther,JDM,Johnno etc talk of the individual, other than SGT,but of the club and the team.
Clearly he will join the long, long list of 'pundits' spouting drivel and inanities.

Not sure what the consensus is here, but I hope Troy is with us next year. Cares about the club and better adapted than most of our players to do well in the Championship. Any Championship club would love to have Deeney.

I think he’s done a total 180 since his best days. Back then he had a different type of arrogance - dare I say, a swagger - it was a youthful arrogance but it still had hard work embedded in it. He was playing alongside Vydra and Forestieri and didn’t look out of place. But as he’s matured (in age), he’s taken on a different arrogance. An arrogance that is deeply embedded in a ‘its only a game, bigger things in life’ mentality. That’s fine as long as that attitude stays off the pitch but doesn’t creep on it - but it has.

That interview to me, isn’t showing someone deserting a sinking ship. It’s showing someone who knows they’ve been part of the problem. His head still tells him he would give Van Dijk/Kompany/Laporte a hard time 9 times out of 10 but that’s not a reality.

I’ll give him some credit - yesterday was a far bigger and better effort from him. It’s just too little, too late.

I genuinely believe he is a major part of our problems.

Too big for the club and an ever present influence in the ensuing saga of players downing tools when they are fed up with a coach.

WHU who finished 2 places above the relegation places scored 7 goals against us this season. If we'd drawn those 2 games we'd have finished above them and been 2 places above the relegation places.

The Championship is no longer a ‘rough and tumble’ melee where the most physical survive. It’s become a technical league where even those at the bottom try and play their way out of danger. I don’t think he’s suited to the English game anymore.

My opinion is he should head over to MLS. They Americans will love him, the speed of the game will suit him and he’ll likely score a few goals as well. He should call in a favour from EJ and get Elton to put a word in with Beckham in Miami.

I agree but I don't think it is deliberate on his part. It's been allowed to happen over time and he of course has had so much attention from the likes of SSN and TS that for most uneducated football fans he IS Watford.
Ultimately Gino has pandered to him and it probably began that awards night when he gave him a 30k Rolex to make up for him not being Championship player of the season or something like.

If a good offer comes in for Troy which I doubt, considering he has a knee operation next week then I think we need to sell him his aging and his starting to get injuries get him off the wage bill. The only club I can see coming in for him is West Brom and he might be tempted because of the locality.

10 goals and 2 assists will be enough to persuade a desperate club to part with 10m to try and keep them up

One point that is being overlooked that you’ve inadvertently highlighted here is the injury - if that keeps him out for a few months, then he’s staying. He is likely one of the players who’s wage is dropped by relegation. He’s probably going to be on something vaguely affordable now. But affordability doesn’t always align with good business sense.

They'll have to put in a word with the authorities too, won't they, as having a criminal record can make you permanenly ineligible for a US visa... Then again, if anyone can have money/a word flashed and get that ignored, I imagine it'd be a professional sports team.

What I won't criticise Deeney for is fronting up afterwards. At least he's done that. More than can be said for those above him.

Does anyone else remember what I think was a segment on the Premier League Show on the BBC, probably last season around the time of the FA Cup run, where they went genuinely sort of 'behind the scenes' at the training ground, including filming in the canteen and the break room and all the places the players spend downtime? From what I recall, it featured Deeney and the way he acts around the place quite heavily, including comments from other players directly addressing that subject, and it was supposed to be lionising him, but frankly even at the time it kind of came across (to my recollection) quite poorly, and very much like he was a lord of the manor, king of the castle, I-make-the-rules-in-here kind of figure even amongst his peers. I'll have to try and find it I suppose to see how accurate my memory of it is.

I think that's true, but don't underestimate the number of games there are to play, especially next season which will be telescoped into a shorter period of time. Our players will be shocked by that.

When GT was manager of Wolves they had the opposite problem to ours with Deeney. He realised they had to replace Steve Bull but 'Bully' was such a hero to the Wolves fans they turned against GT.

Was probably too upset to come out and say anything. Strikes me as one of the only one who cared about our predicament. He looked genuinely gutted when he came off yesterday.

    Even that though, it’s boring.

Did you read the BBC Sport article?

Loosely quoted: “I’m a big boy, I’ve got a family if people want to abuse me on the Internet feel free only people I care about is my family”

Get over yourself Troy, you’re insignificant in the wider football landscape. Nobody other than Watford fans spends more than five minutes thinking about you.

Pogba gets singled out and abused by fans and pundits every time he breathes and he never mentions “haters” once.

It was funny and edgy when Deeney first addressed them. Now it’s just gimmicky PR and honestly, the amount that he mentions them I think it’s a larger issue to him than anyone else, a self fulfilling prophecy essentially.

Oh come on, he did it to keep himself relevant. It was almost a plea for someone to come in for him (which suits most of us). He even couldn’t help himself swearing at a reporter, just to keep his name alive on Twitter. The bloke is a fraud and he’s been stealing a living for at least 3 years now!

Read all my posts about the guy, including the ones made this morning. I've been vocal in my criticism.

All I'm saying is that at least he said SOMETHING and didn't slink off to the changing rooms. Had he done that, there would be just as many people, if not more, criticising him for saying nothing.

This thread has been full of people telling him he's not been good enough and that its time to go - he comes out and agrees, and people aren't happy that he's said it.

What exactly would you have wanted him to say?

I think any Watford player would have said the same as Deeney when it came to "we've just not been good enough" etc. if asked, but he was the one invited to do an interview because, to the media, he is Mr. Watford.

I didn’t want to hear from him. Didn’t want to hear from anyone in the club, just wanted action!!

If I was to choose what I wanted to hear from Cojones it would’ve been him accepting his responsibilities as a leader and a captain and admitting that he hasn’t done his job probably and that he doesn’t really care. That’s the truth of the matter, but everyone crows on about how ‘honest’ he is. Just stealing a living and using his soundbites to further his own agenda.

Sick of the idiot. Will Hughes was the only one who came out week after week, game after game and fronted up the cameras! Old Cojones came out after the Newcastle game where it was all about him! Didn’t hear sh*t from him after Southampton at H or WHU A.

    Bottle job.

He may be, but that seems speculative. I'm looking at it purely from a footballing perspective in which case he would surely be an asset. Whatever is happening behind the scenes I have no idea.

Doubt there's much love lost there, but I don't think West Brom and Wolves really care much about Birmingham City, I'm sure Deeney would go there (unless of course Brum themselves are interested and something can be arranged). Doubt anyone any higher than Birmingham would be interested in him, and any club in that position won't have the finances to afford his wages (maybe Troy would play for Birmingham for free? Dunno)
