Got to keep this lad on the strength to help with our campaign next season to bounce straight back up, along with our other youngsters and a few older heads too.

Indeed. Some very critical decisions coming. They need to make them quickly but sensibly so they can get prepared and be running from day one. The worst thing is to either rush into poor decisions quickly or leave them too late so that preparation for the Chumpionship is not right.

I would retain Cleverly. He would be an asset at that level. Not PL material but certainly would do a job a tier down. He could mentor some of them. Dele-Bashiru has not kicked on or kicked a football much. I would happily bring in Doyle and Harwood-Bellis from Abu Dhabi so long as we were not told they have to play each game.

I hope so, I think Quina would flourish in the Championship. I know for a fact that a top 6 (by league finish) Championship club wanted him on loan last summer - give him the game time and he'll be a key part of our squad next season imo.

I agree and would like to see him start the season in the first XI. It's down to him to stay there after that. Do you know why the loan didn't happen?

I know they didn't get loans sorted for Bachmann & Dahlberg in time so they were left floundering without football for too long.

Indeed. But we still need to retain some experienced heads or bring one or two in who have played well at that level and may have a shot at PL football. Too many kids is also a recipe for problems. They need some guidance still. and their lack of experience can be compensated for. They sometimes do things which as they get older and with more games they would never do at a later age. That is if they have developed. Some never learn and fall by the wayside.

    Maybe re. Cleverley.
He's contracted to 2022 I think and if we do put some faith in younger players they will need an old head to guide them at times. If he stays he'll need a decent pre-season because right now he looks so off the pace.

The window opens tomorrow so I don't think it'll be too long before we start to see the type of squad we'll have next season through either players leaving early on or any early deals coming into the club.

Back to my original post on this thread, I hope JP & Cucho are here next season but I wouldn't be surprised to see them at Udinese though. Whatever happens with those two I think it'll be a busy few weeks.

And then decided not to play him. Madness. (Although he did keep picking up niggly sodding injuries).

Fingers crossed he's still here in 10 weeks when the window closes and he kick starts his Watford career.

Yep, people are overstating his performance a bit today because he came on while we were going all out attack against a leggy Arsenal side who really couldn't have given two f***s what happened in the last 30 minutes.

He clearly has a lot of promise, but a season playing a bit more regularly for us in the Championship will be good for his development.

Nice little quote from him on our FB page.

Saying he’s put on 7kg and that lockdown was key for him to build up strength etc.

Sounds like he’s staying this season.

Good to see he's adapting to British life. I have also put on around 7kg courtesy of home brew beers and Papa Johns.

  12. Cleverley is off the pace?
He did a lot of the work and the running for our goal at the weekend
    Looks right on it

    He did, looked very sharp.

My post saying he was off the pace was written on the last day of last season when he looked unfit and woeful, in my opinion.

  16. Ah sorry yes, didn’t check the date. Agree he did. Also I don’t like him as a DM.

Agreed he did not look good during the mini 9 game season.

However, I recently posted that he was probably rusty as he had only just come back from an injury and that if he could get back to being more like he was before his injury we should probably keep him, but if he still looked off the pace it was probably time to let him go.

Therefore hopefully he is back to his old self and if he is he could be a big asset especially if we lose Doucoure and Capoue.

Interestingly we decided to record Joao brushing his teeth yesterday as part of media day. I would love to know what the footage is going to be used for.

If I find out he's been sold, I'll tear up my half and half Watford Wolves scarf from the FA Cup Semi Final and send it without a stamp to Scott Ducksberry at Vicarage Road so he has to pay for postage.

******* hell, 7kg is a lot for a little squirt like him. I hope he's not been doing Eat Out to Help Out at Bull Rodizio in Apsley, 3 nights a week and now he's got a 7kg meat scarf clogging up his colon.

One of the things that struck me about him was his running style, it was like he glided across the pitch, which I think shows good balance, agility etc. Hope this new weight gain doesn't effect that too much.

I remember when Barnes first joined us. He was a skinny little scamp too. I think GOD wanted him to bulk up a bit for English football.

I think you can stop bulking up now John if you're reading this.

Is it grounds for concern that Pervis and Suarez have such crappy numbers?

Would we be unable to switch them in a few weeks should we bump Janmaat and Deeney out?

  28. nornironhorn

Suarez was 26 last season for Zaragoza so he mustn't mind the big numbers.

Estupinan was 30 last season for Osasuna so he probably has the number he wants.

Liverpool's 2 full backs are 66 and 26 whilst John Terry was the latter so wouldn't worry too much about high numbers.

The boy looks mustard. So comfortable on the ball. Tonight we saw some good runs, a few nutmegs, a brilliant through ball, a couple of signs of his attacking instincts.

I hope we have a bit more possession than that usually and can bring him in to it more. Second half we didn’t give him nearly enough of the ball.

Yeah, that little move he pulled a few times where he controlled it with his back to goal, but used his first touch to make space for himself to turn and play somebody in was pretty good to watch.

Looked more prepared for the physical stuff and showed up nicely. Needs more support though. A promising start for him tonight, but probably should have taken one of his headed chances.

The bit towards the end where he held up the ball, flicked it up a few times and backheeled it in the air towards Murray was bloody sensational.
